Anyone doing the Long Island half/marathon?
I am all registered and already regretting it
I haven't been able to get into a routine and I am hoping this will force me to do so. Also, I will be writing my thesis this Spring and I need an outlet to get my extra energy and stress out.

Re: Anyone doing the Long Island half/marathon?
I was going to do the half but I don't think I will be ready for it so I signed up for the 10k. I have only done a few 5ks and I ran the Cow Harbor race for the first time this past September. I figured I should get a few more 10ks under my belt before moving on to the half marathon. I am hoping to improve my 10k time and then train for the Diva 1/2 in October. I also want to do Cow Harbor again and then run the LI Half in 2012.
Good Luck with your training!

Do it with me Irene!!! I was thinking of doing the more marathon but decided on the LI one because it is closer, cheaper and I have done this course before and am more comfortable with it.

Re: Anyone doing the Long Island half/marathon?
I really want to do the 13.1 series in Queens the month before....but I also want to do this one too! I ran LI last year and would love to beat my time. They are only a month apart, but I'm hoping to do it!

I was struggling with this as well. I've run two half marathons a month and half apart and was a fine. I'm worried a month would be cutting it close.

Re: Anyone doing the Long Island half/marathon?
I'm doing the full with DH. Not sure how I feel about running 13 of it on the highway, but I wanted to do a local full marathon this year & I can't count on getting into the nyc so I decided to do this one. Never did a full before, so I'm not looking to set a great time, just looking to finish.

Re: Anyone doing the Long Island half/marathon?
I was just looking at that today, I want to do the half so bad but dont know if I will be ready by then. The most I have run is an 8k in Nov and I have been really off my schedule for the last few wks w/the holidays although I will be right back after the new year. I looked at the course and it looks challenging, I'm a fan of the flat/fast.... thoughts from those that have ran the half b4?

You ran a half this summer right? Was it your first? I don't know if I should try to find a diff course or just wait till next year. I am such a slow runner, maybe I should just work on getting my time up for now. I am torn...

Re: Anyone doing the Long Island half/marathon?
The Diva course is very similar to the LI Half course; the only thing is that it does not go on the Wantagh for the one mile like the LI does....it stays more in the Eisenhower Park area. You do a loop around Charles Lindbergh. Not that I'm a huge fan of the LI Half, but I think the course is a little more interesting than the Diva. What I really didn't like about Diva was the 3-4 miles that you looped near the Coliseum - total boredom! Also, I will not run Diva unless I know they improved the starting area; it was a total disaster, wall-to-wall people and you could not move up to your pace area unless you were there super early. I overall liked Diva, but just not crazy about those few things. And both LI and Diva are flat...just one minor hill going up the entrance to the Wantagh for the LI...no big deal though.
If you are looking for an October Half, you should try Entenmann's in Bay Shore. Not crowded at all, they have a 5k, 10k and half. The course is very nice, runs near beautiful neighborhoods and the water....no major crowds, but a nice, flat course....and only $25, even on race day!! And free cake and goodies from Entenmanns!! It usually is the Sat, same weekend as Diva.

Thanks so much- if the L.I half is similiar to the Diva I'll be fine!
I agree with the Colesium loop- that was just boring!

Re: Anyone doing the Long Island half/marathon?
I really want to do the Diva even though I hear the route is boring - I have to admit... The whole shtick appeals to me!
I'm curious why you guys don't feel you will be ready for a half in May? 3 months isn't long enough to train if you have a reasonable base? I'm wondering if I should do the 10K if that's the case....

3 months is definatly enough time to train if you have a reasonable base. If you've been running awhile now you can do it.
The Diva has its "boring" parts but overall it was a fun race.

Re: Anyone doing the Long Island half/marathon?
I want to run the half. Right now the date is up in the air.
As for the course...it's a flat course. They changed it a few years ago and it made the WORLD of difference. No more torture on the Wantagh Parkway (sorry full marathon - you still get to do this!). There are a few minor inclines by over passes (Post Ave and Northern Parkway and a few on the Wantagh) and Jericho Turnpike going to Broad Hollow is a slight incline, but once you get finished with Jericho it's all down (with the few overpass exceptions)
There are tons of people running the half, so you'll never be bored.

I did it in 2009 (I was 8 months preggo last year). It is definitely a flat course. It was my first half and I found it very manageable. When you get back into the park at the end it feels like FOREVER but then you get to that finish line and you feel amazing
For those considering it, although a regular runner I never ran more than 6 or 7 miles. I followed a training program over 12 weeks and was well-prepared for the race.
It is an awesome distance. It is one that you really have to train for. It gives you a goal but it is manageable and not as hardcore as marathon training.
Good luck to all of those training/running!!! We should all meet up before the race

Re: Anyone doing the Long Island half/marathon?
This one is also good for those who can't run more than 3-4 days per week. I usually do my own thing, but last spring I sort of used this as a guide. Scroll towards the bottom for the schedule. Also, there are other links to various levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced, etc). What I do is make the Tues run speedwork. If you look at the intermediate schedule, that one includes speed.
