Yes

and I am not sure why every male in DH's family (besides DH and his brothers) are named Richard and go by that lovely nickname...

Re: Anyone else have a problem with the nickname for Richard?

My Dad is a Richard and everyone calls him D ick, D ickie when he was little which his sisters still call him.

My Dad's side is a wacky bunch and my Stepmother is a very proper person. She was not a fan of the nickname at all. She worked very hard to get him to be called Rich or Richard. Once when we were at my Aunts house everyone was calling him D ick, so my stepmother said he actually prefers Richard now (mind you they weren't married yet) So my very loud Aunt says.....He is a D ick, he always was a D ick and he'll always be a D ick. Chat Icon I thought my Stepmother was going to pass out!! It was quite the initiation into our family. Chat Icon

My grandfather and uncle are both "D!ck" and I just never think of them in that way.

I work with a guy named D!ck, but I think that is for a reason Chat Icon Chat Icon

I just don't understand where D!ck comes from, though... Chat Icon

D!ck is not short for Richard!

My husband is Richard and I call him that just to be silly sometimes but he would never go by that nickname... EVER.

Re: Anyone else have a problem with the nickname for Richard?

My dad is a Richard and he goes by Richie, never any other name, really.

Someone I deal with through my work is also named Richard and he is usually called Rick.

Maybe because Richard is my dad's name, I can't really think of **** as a nickname for Richard.

DH's best friend and BIL are both named Richard.

They also both go by either Richard or Rich.

I think both are uncomfortable with ****, as are their wives.

My grandfather goes by it as does my step father (but I have ALWAYS called him Richard as my mom and I could never call him D ick) and my uncle goes by Richie and my BIL goes by Rick.

I think for *older* guys, D ick was just that, a nick name.

I know a Richard Weiner. How parents could to that to a kid is beyond me.

My dad's name is Richard. He went by D!ck in high school, his good friend still calls him that, but everyone else calls him Rich now. I don't think I would be okay with anyone calling him D!ck Chat Icon

I used to work for a mortgage company. I had a file once where the borrowers name was Richard **** and he lived on Hymen St.

I thought it was a joke at first...lol.

One of the teachers in my high school was Harry Weiner, the rumor was his middle name was Richard, but I can't confirm that Chat Icon

Re: Anyone else have a problem with the nickname for Richard?

Why is **** a nickname for Richard?

a man named richard may be nicknamed **** because that is the traditional diminutive form of the name Richard. More recently, 'Rick' has also become commonplace.
The name Richard is very old and it's true origins may well be lost in the depths of time past. The name likely stems from Old English, since 'Ric' meant ruler and 'heard' meant hard. It is also feasible that with the advent of rhyming slang, Richard would be shortened to Rich and then to Rick and on to ****. Much like William - Will - Bill.
'****' eventually, like 'Jack', came to mean one of the common men as in "every Tom, ****, or Harry". Shakespeare uses "every Tom, ****, or Francis" in Henry IV Part I.
