Anyone NOT BFing?
I am not exactly getting slack for my choice, but I have noticed some people in shock- tell me your reasons.

Re: Anyone NOT BFing?
I totally know what you mean. It might sound strange, but I'm just not the breast feeding type. I'm sure I'll catch slack for saying so, but in all honesty I'm weirded out by the whole pregnancy thing as it is, and breastfeeding is just too much for me to handle.
Don't get me wrong, DH and I are thrilled to be having a baby, but I guess I just feel like my body's not my own right now and I can't wait to have it back again.
Maybe it has to do with my mother not breastfeeding me. DH's mother didn't breastfeed either, and neither did either of my sister-in-laws. I don't see anything wrong with bottle feeding.
My reasons are numerous and I think I've said too much already so I'll just stop here.

Re: Anyone NOT BFing?
I am going to try it, but a big reason why we are trying it, is bc it will save $ and it is better for the baby. That being said, if it doesn't work out, I have no problem bottle feeding, and know my child will still be well fed. I was bottle fed, and so was DH.

Those are my feelings exactly. I will try for the exact reasons as you, but I still feel weird about the whole thing.

Re: Anyone NOT BFing?
For most of my pregnancy I said I wouldn't. Our parents didn't and we haven't turned out so bad. I know all the benefits, I actually did a research paper on it in college so I don't need anyone pontificating about how fabulous it is.....
I am ready to have my body back, and I even said I would give it a shot in the hospital.
To me, I view breasts sexually, and to cross that line with BFing, I don't know how I will react to that. The thought right now makes me very uncomfortable.
I will say though that it does burn mucho calories and helps you lose weight and baby belly bulge faster, so that may tip the odds in BFing's favor.....

Same here. That's where my "weirdness" factor comes in. And I almost don't want DH to watch me BF either.

I think I've said too much already so I'll just stop here.
I should hope no one is offended by someone elses reasons not to BF- it's a personal choice, right? It's so weird- thes epeople that say things to me are like, defending BFing. And SHOCKED that I won't do it.
I also wasnt BFed- I turned out OK I think. And I was a healthy baby.
I am worse than anyone- I don't want to wake up to feed every 2 hours. More than that- I want to be able to drink again. Those are super shallow- but it's my choice, right? PLus I will only be home for like 6 weeks.
Anyway- one of my girlfriends said that I HAVE to, or that the hospital will ask me to, because there are nutirents and antibodies that the child will not get from formula. Well, what about those babies who don't take to BFing? It seems to me like there is a lack in information here.
I will definitely talk to my Dr about it.

There are planty of people who feel it is their place to cross boundaries and then tere are those who respect your wishes. We have no idea what we will encounter in the hospital.....
Don't feel shallow, you dedicated 9 months of YOUR body to another human being, that, IMO, is extremely generous in and of itself.
I started this same thread months ago and it turned out pretty well, we know how to conversate on the pg board..

Re: Anyone NOT BFing?
i was not sold on breastfeeding at all. i basically told myself i would give it a try, no pressure, and see what happened.
i got really lucky. ds latched on perfectly and nursed within minutes of bring born. i've never had trouble with boob soreness, bleeding, etc. i absolutely love nursing, which i never really thought i would, so i'm happy i gave it a chance.
having said that, formula feeding is definitely easier and preferable in some respects. i can see why many women choose it. at the end of the day, it's a personal decision, and i'm glad you aren't getting slack for it.

Re: Anyone NOT BFing?
I'm sure i'll get slack for my reasons because they're very selfish reasons but i'm going to be 100% honest.
I don't want to because from what i've seen and heard it completely ruins your b**bs. I paid ALOT of money last year for my b**bies and I want to keep them in the best shape I can. I know pregnancy itself is going to change them but that i'm ok with...but why do further damage if I can avoid it.

Oh good. I'm glad to see I had no reasons to feel worried about posting my response. I share all of your reasons for not wanting to BF. I'm glad there are others out there like me!

Re: Anyone NOT BFing?
I don't think anyone should catch slack for anything, this is a personal decision, and even if your reasons are selfish, they are your reasons. No one has the right to question you.
I am sure we all just hope our children are healthy, and eat well, no matter what method, that is what it comes down to.

Re: Anyone NOT BFing?
I don't plan on Bfing. I'm not comfortable with doing it. People keep telling me that it's good for the baby, good for losing weight, and cost effective(not in a condescending way, but more informative). I understand all those points, but I just don't feel comfortable. My views may change once I have the baby and I am in the hospital, but we'll see.

yeah... i don't really understand the people who are so extreme in their views about this. i guess i am a sort of moderate, live-and-let-live type of person in general, so people who take extreme stances on controversial topics freak me out a little.
before i gave birth one of my colleagues was like, "you're going to breastfeed, RIGHT?" - as if to imply that any other choice would have been unthinkable. i was so annoyed.
bottom line - your child, your body, your choice!! i wish people would just mind their own business

Can you clarify this whole nutrient/ antibody thing? I don't mind having selfish reasons, unless it may hurt the baby.

I have to add that if it would make a difference in my babys health then I would absolutely BF. I would never ever in a million years do anything to jeopardize that.

For real. And add my booby appearance to my list of things I fear. And if I bought them- it would be even bigger a reason. I am actually terrified of the cracking or bleeding or whatever else happens. I'm also terrified of the pain form "drying up". We can't win.

Our bodies naturally produce antibodies, which fight off infection, bacteria, chemicals and toxins, which are passed through the milk. It is claimed that this will help babies not get sick as often, but I personally know someone who BFed all 4 of her kids and they are constantly sick....constantly.....

Re: Anyone NOT BFing?
I will try. If I can't - I won't stress too much, but will try.
My reasons are, - it helps to loose weight - helps to get your body weight - helps with reducing risk from breast cancer (i have read in many medical magazines that not breastfeeding increasing chances of breast cancer). - healthier for the baby

some medical journals also believe that there are benefits that we don't even know yet. For instance, they just recently found DHA - a vitamin in breast milk that helps with brain development and such. Its something now thats available in stores - but it beggs the question on how many other things they don't know yet that help that formular doesn't have?
Honestly, I feel its a very personal choice and no one should push their believe on you.

You know my best friend?
Well, she doesn't have 4 kids yet but I'm pretty sure by the time I get home from work today she'll have 4. All breastfed, all sick. CONSTANTLY. Not that she's the norm... I'm pretty sure that if she formula fed they'd still be sick all the time.
I do plan on bfing, at least in the beginning, but I'm not going to flame anyone for their reasons not to.

Re: Anyone NOT BFing?
I am just uncomfortable with it. I have no desire to do it and I hate when people judge me for it. I don't want to whip out my boob every two hours and I think my DH should have to wake up at 2am to do feedings also. I have several friends that have BF and one is literally a slave to it. Another one had lots of problems with her milk ducts getting clogged and stuff. I also have to go back to work and I am a teacher in the city. There is nowhere for me to pump and I am certainly not gonna do it in my classroom oir the bathroom.
Plus I want my body back. I understand that it will not be the one I started with but it doesn't need anymore stretching, sucking, or painful nipples!
