The mayor should be arrested for giving permission for these hood rats to behave like that. ****...you did not just say this! I'd love to break your child's spine and call you a ghetto rat for destroying property to express your pain over the injustice. It's the immoral, deep seated and racist beliefs like these that are truly at the crux of this dilemma. I could cry at just how truly ignorant your comment is. So sad that this level of racism still exists and is getting passed on to the next generation.
Let's be clear.....the people who are DESTROYING their own neighborhoods are not protesting Freddy Gray's death. They are opportunists and thugs taking advantage. The true protesters, while heated at points, didn't behave this way.
Today's issues started when the local high school let out and those jackasses decided to loot the mall. Because the police were essentially told to stand down, it grew from there.

Racist, power hungry cops abusing their authority or the black man and his supporters finally rising up and expressing their rage and refusal to allow this to continue. Granted....destroying property and stealing will never solve the problem. They are harmful, useless actions...but a true solution or meaningful protest can not be accomplished lawfully because the law uses MURDER to control things. For all you white privileged persons out there condemning the actions of those whose lives have been forever changed by these police crimes....please, please, have some empathy. Step out of your privilege and imagine your child being murdered despite him or her NOT FIGHTING BACK. "Who gives a shit about your breathing". That's what a cop said when a dying man in custody said he couldn't breathe. He wasn't resisting. He wasn't a danger. He wasn't armed. He was struggling to breathe under the unnecessary physical force of those in uniform. I'm seriously so tired of hearing the group of people who are taking a stand being called "Animals". The Murderers are the real Animals...the police are out of line here and they need to stop taking away the lives of people who are not a life or death threat to them. When I hear white people condemn this group....it makes me so ashamed to be white myself. Imagine...really imagine if the tables were turned and the LAW, the GOVERNMENT...was against you, targeting you, punishing you and killing you moreso than your black counterparts doing the same things. It's just not ok. Condemning the riots only serves to deepen the divide. Black Lives Matter. And these Muderous Cops need to be held accountable in a court of law. When a death is ruled a homicide, charges need to be filed. They certainly would be if it were a black cop on a white man. So, please, enough complaining. Look in the mirror. If you can't see any rationale for this riotous behavior, then YOU are the problem. And until you confront your own racism, these things will continue. Property Destruction VS. Murder. It's a no brainer!
does something have to happen to correct the very serious issue with the police arresting and the death of someone in their custody? Yes, absolutely. If they caused the spinal injury, they should loose their job, be put into jail, and loose their pension. But that still does not give anyone else justification for looting, causing fires to police cars, and buildings, destroying personal and public property, or targeting police to kill them. Two wrongs do not and will not ever make a right. You want change? Work the system the right way by becoming involved with politics and getting your candidates elected. I do feel badly that the man was killed, but it does not excuse anyone else from behaving badly.

Wait, what?? Are you condoning this disgusting dangerous behavior. How in the world can you say looting and burning down businesses is the right way to express pain over the injustices???? Because looting the liquor store, cvs,and check cashing place is really proving a point. I could cry people as ignorant as you exist in this world.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on all points. However, I think that this country is far too racist and our police forces far too corrupt for any successful lobbying to take place. I think that your notions are desirable and ideal, but at this point, they are utopian and unattainable. I don't have a better suggestion that yours though. I just don't feel like it could work to change the enormity of the system.

Exactly!!your comments are the most ignorant I have seen ! How dare you say I'd love to break your child's spine. What is wrong with you?
Bad things happen. When shit goes bad it doesn't give ANYONE ATHE RIGHT TO ACT LIKE AN ANIMAL!! Yes. Animal. They are acting like animals. I know looting toilet paper and Oreos is definitely telling everyone that justice will be done.
Gtf out of here. Your comments are ridiculous and you should not be taken Seriously whatsoever

You're right. I'd be doing something about it, if it was my child. I wouldn't expect or encourage hundreds of hood rats to torch and destroy my city to show "support". How does stealing toilet paper from CVS prove anything? Black lives only seem to matter if it involves a white cop. Black lives don't matter when its blacks killings blacks. Come on.

"When you hear white people condemn this group"?? The black mayor just called them thugs. "Thugs are attacking our city". Is it ok that she called them thugs, because she's black? I'll be back after I 'confront my own racism.'

Throwing BRICKS at police officers is hardly harmless. Although I get your point. I myself cringe when I hear people refer to the looters as "animals" or "hood rats", it reeks of white privilege. It is true ,the police in this country should be more informed, and I for one am shocked that deaths in policy custody are still occurring, what will it take for the police to learn their lesson and act more responsible? They are under a microscope and yet it is still happening. I do believe that most cops are good, honest, hard working people. HOWEVER< all that said, it does not give anybody the right to act they way these looters are behaving. It is counterproductive to the cause, and furthermore, it fuels the flame of those people, white or otherwise, to say "see, look at those animals behaving like that, they deserve what they get." It is not right, but the cycle must stop somewhere, and if isn't with the police (where it should be), then the oppressed must stand up and let their VOICES be heard, as history has taught us, the pen, and in this case dialogue, is mightier than the sword.

The system needs to change....I have no idea how to make that happen. How do you eliminate generations and generations of racism from one's beliefs??? I have absolutely no idea. I am one person...one white person and I have done my part to recognize the privilege that comes with it and teach my children about it. And Yes, breaking someone's spine and killing them is Vile. When they die...a mother suffers beyond comprehension. That was the point I was trying to make. (FTR: I don't even kill spiders...I put them back outside....so clearly, my point was lost on you and likely a couple others who went for a literal interpretation).

Because stealing Oreos and Toilet Paper is making a big statement against police brutality. Disgusting!
ETS: I'm not watching it because it gets me so angry. I saw a few stories on line.
Assholes.
Exactly I refuse to watch any footage. It makes my blood boil and it disgusts me that community "leaders" do not speak out against this. My mind just cannot fathom how any human can think this is an appropriate way to act...EVER! I am sorry but I COMPLETELY understand being frustrated, angry as hell and wanting to be hear but laughing as you steal from others does not in ANY way help anyone.

Thank you for the intelligent, thoughtful response. Yes....it needs to stop somewhere and somehow the police force needs to retrain and reorient their members. Once the emotions in Baltimore and across this nation die down, I bet that the oppressed will follow the right and moral path to equality. However, not much time passes before another black man is murdered by a white cop doing what his predecessors have done, only now he is caught on camera. The movement hasn't even been given enough time to heal and act strategically before another atrocity is committed and starts the cycle all over again. I too, can not believe it happened again.

Re: Anyone watching the Baltimore riots?
There is no excuse for rioting, and as many of you have pointed out, most of the rioters are taking advantage for their own paltry gain rather than to make any political point. It is disgusting to so dishonor the man who died with petty theft and destructiveness. No question, no argument from me.
However....
sitting here judging them, blaming the family of the deceased (who, by the way, repeatedly called for peaceful protests as well as planning a peace walk for Friday) is also wrong.
Who among us can really claim to understand how they are feeling, to see person after person of our race killed by a police officer, oftentimes, it seems, without justification? How can it feel to constantly feel like justice is forever out of your reach?
I don't know, and I never will. But I have compassion for their anger, although not for the way that some are expressing it.
Using words like "thug" and "hood" are needlessly inflammatory, in my opinion. These are words that have deep negative resonance to the black community (I would never presume to speak for anyone, but I am making that statement based on reactions both here and in real life.). These are words that, historically, have been used to dehumanize African Americans. Even if these rioters are 100% wrong, which I believe they are, we don't have to make it worse for the people who are seeing their cause morphed into a violence they neither wanted nor agreed with. And they are human, not animals. The worst of humans, certainly, but humans nonetheless.
My 5 year old's best friend is a little black boy. His mom and I have had many great discussion about race. Her son is going to be very tall. And she's afraid of that, because it will make him seem older, which will make him more of a target. Can you imagine being afraid your kid is going to be too tall? I can't.
I guess my plea is for some thoughtfulness; rioting like this is inexcusable, and those participating should be caught and punished. But the anger it stems from is justified, and we must, as a country, rise up to meet it in a just and American way.

Your point wasn't lost on me.
I don't know the answer either. BUT whats happening in Baltimore is NOT the answer. These cops need to be brought to justice because it's apparent something happened in that van. Freddie Grays family has asked for calm in the city. They do not want this. And if anyone has a right to destroy a cop car it's them. Not these opportunist who are looking for free food and clothes!
Protest. Lay down in the streets. Block bridges. There is NO reason to destroy another persons property.
There are plenty of people calling these rioters animals. Not just white people.
And being upset that riots are taking place in your neighborhood and having YOUR place of business burned down are 2 different things. I find it very hard to believe you would still be so understanding if these monsters came in and stole everything you worked hard for.
But hey..maybe I'm wrong. I just hope you will never have to find out.

Its not OK, its not. Its not the way, but I was just watching Fox News (gasp!). And they were interviewing a community member and he said this may not have anything to directly do with Freddy, but that each of these community members involved in the riots, have their own story. They are angry for their own stories. Are they going about it the right way, no, of course not, but he said they are all reacting to their own story and everyone has one. I can understand that, not in the way they can, but it was a statement I hadnt yet heard and it made me go "ah-ha, I can see that"

Anyone watching the Baltimore riots?
Question....has it been confirmed that the police officers who were with Gray were white? Everything I have found has not specified their races.

I have to be honest. I just switched on Fox News and a woman was standing in the middle of the chaos, held a sign that said "stop lethal force." The reporter spoke to her for quite some time and she spoke extremely eloquently. I wish the rioters would realize that words do speak louder than dramatic actions. Listening to her helped me identify with her struggle within her community.
Unfortunately this rioting is not about Gray. His story is getting lost in thugs' actions and it is clear based on the media's coverage. It is showing the looting, rioting andall of the damaging effects that come from both. I pray nobody else is injured/killed during these riots and that they fully investigate the circumstances surrounding Gray's death.

Re: Anyone watching the Baltimore riots?
The thing that really upsets me, is how the people who riot are saying this is their form of protest and that nothing will change, or the system is broken. You know what, the system is what you make of it. In the 1980s gay people were dragged by cars, hurt by the police, ostrich zed by society, etc. did they loot and riot? No. They figured out how to work the system and made the changes for themselves. If you think for one second how much hate and vitriol was expressed to the gay community, but did they do what these rioters are doing? No. They peacefully protested. They worked on changing the laws. And through that reasonable minds were persuaded that they were persecuted against. So to say, oh it will never change, or oh it is impossible, or oh those are some utopian glasses you are using, no that is not the truth. And to call things "privilege" everyone has their own struggles, and their own issues. Do some people have things easier, yes, but not everyone. It is not an us and them. If people work together then things can get accomplished.

Re: Anyone watching the Baltimore riots?
what was the tipping point that brought this from a peaceful protest of LACK OF INFORMATION and INVESTIGATION into the death of Freddie Gray to A violent destruction of a beloved city? Human behavior is human behavior, regardless of race. Where did this go wrong? How did a more hands-off police presence open the door for this volatile reaction?

Re: Anyone watching the Baltimore riots?
A Must read for Whites who don't think they are racist and/or who don't believe in the power of white privilege. It's as alive as it ever has been. And until that changes.....white cops will always have more power than black cops and white criminals will always be more overlooked than black criminals. It is a flawed system and it's not at all an easy fix until EVERY white person confronts their racism and puts and end to what they learned from their grandparents. The civil rights movement was NOT that long ago. We are newborns in the evolution of equality.
