apartment rent in NYC
DH and I are most likely moving to NYC early this summer. We're still exploring our options but we're leaning toward UWS but are open to one of the nicer areas of Queens, or other areas of the city.
We looked a little on craigslist and the prices vary so much, and there are so many apartments! it's overwhelming! Everything looks so expensive too -- we saw one apt listed for $7900/month!!!! that is insane!
We're used to having a renovated spacious apartment with an elevator. We know the same apartment in NYC would be , but what's considered reasonable for a decently nice place in Manhattan? (Not looking for a grimy hole in the wall, but it doesn't have to be extremely luxurious)
Also, please answer the poll (you dont have to post your answer) to give us an idea of what real people actually pay to live in Manhattan...
TYIA
Edit: we'd *prefer* a place with a dishwasher, an elevator, nice closet space, hardwood floors, etc... a doorman/pool would be nice but are not necessary (our current building doesnt have either)

Re: apartment rent in NYC
Does it have to be manhattan? Also, another factor is rent stabilized which can be less than $1200 but are HARD to find unless you know someone who is giving one up. I ask b/c I saw some gorgeous pre-war apartments in forrest hills for roughly $1600 when I helped a friend look this summer.

LIC is up and coming and very close to Manhattan. Not sure of the rents though. My brother lives on Roosevelt Island in a brand new building and loves it. I believe he pays around $1800 for a 1-bedroom.

DH really prefers to live in Manhattan (we currently live OOS -- I'm from NY, DH is not) but I'm a little more flexible with respect to queens/etc as long as it's not too far of a commute from midtown. I'm exploring our options at this point

Re: apartment rent in NYC
My company moved out of a 2 bedroom and a 1 bedroom at the Riverbank West. We paid ~$4500? ~$4,700 for the 2 bedroom. Studios in that building were going for $2542 this summer (for a higher floor).
I'll find out what we're paying for the new studios, but the building doesn't have all of the amenities as the old building.

My parents rent a 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment at 92nd and York Avenue and it is $4100/a month. They have a doorman, elevator and pool.
Apparently, it is a rent stablized building.

Re: apartment rent in NYC
Depends what you want- studio, 1BR, 2BR...
But I would say, for a 1BR to spend AT LEAST in the high 2000's/low 3000's. Depends what amenities you are willing to give up.

Re: apartment rent in NYC
It depends on soooooo many things. For all those amenties it's def. going to be $$$$ regardless of where. But then how many bdrms are you looking for, how far east and west on the avenues are you willing to go, etc.

Re: apartment rent in NYC
We own but before I moved into DH's co-op I rented a 3 bedroom in Washington Heights. It was $1600 a month and rent stabilized. The area was OK but certainly not for everyone. It really depends on the area and size of the apt, not to mention amenities and other extras that may come with the building.
ETA: Just so you know, washer and dryers are extremely rare in nyc apts and you will pay a premium for that. Most dry cleaners will do laundry for about $1 a pound so it's almost cheaper to have someone else do it.

Re: apartment rent in NYC
I used to live in a brand new apartment building in Chelsea, that had doormen, elevators (obviously), on site dry cleaners, gym, stainless steel appliances and granite counters - I believe I paid 2650 for a 1 bedroom.

Re: apartment rent in NYC
another important thing to think about
are you going to have a car (you really don't need one) but that can cost an additional $400-$700 a month to park
if you have no car- I really think living in Manhattan is almost cheaper then renting outside manhattan and having a car, car payment, gas and insurace
I know for me it was cheaper when I lived in Manhattan then if I rented on LI and paid for rent and my car (with no car payment on it)

This is close to what we pay on the UWS. But our gym is included. The building is amazing, we have full water views, and 24 hour concierge. We love it here.
....But I'd rather be paying a mortgage.
My friend lives in park slope and pays $2200 for a 2 bedroom. its HUGE and really nice!!!
ETA: I didn't think this many people lived in nyc! We need to do a NYC gtg!! that's exciting!

i own my car outright, DH has 2 years of payments left on his. we'd probably sell one or both (depending on where we lived -- and where DH's job is)

That's def. advice I can pass along. Get rid of ALL cars!!! We have one, and we pay through the roof in monthly parking.
We're thinking of getting rid of it. It's an expense you don't need.

Agreed! DH and I got rid of our car about 2 years ago. Best thing we ever did. We got a zip car membership instead and saved 400 dollars a month!
