We moved out of nyc a little less than a year ago. OUr rent was around $3600 for a 690 sq ft 1br - it was on the east side - doorman building - very new - gym (had to pay extra) and roof deck - no pool though.
This is close to what we pay on the UWS. But our gym is included. The building is amazing, we have full water views, and 24 hour concierge. We love it here.
....But I'd rather be paying a mortgage.
My friend lives in park slope and pays $2200 for a 2 bedroom. its HUGE and really nice!!!
ETA: I didn't think this many people lived in nyc! We need to do a NYC gtg!! that's exciting!
Bon your gym is included? That's great!

Re: apartment rent in NYC
I own, but when I left my 1 bdrm apt on 14th and 1st in June 07, my rent was being increased to $2900. That apt is >$3K for new residents. Most people I know rent 1 bdrms with rent between $2700 and $3200. If I were to rent out my 2 bdrm, the going rate would be approx $4500.
Price depends on alot of things... size, location, amenities. If you are new to the market, I would suggest that you are VERY flexible. Since you are out of town, the easiest thing to do would be to work with a broker. Tell them what you are looking for, and have them arrange alot of apts to look at when you are in town. You should also call the managing agents of buildings to see what apts are available to avoid a broker's fee (which is 15% of your annual rent). Craigslist is hard if you are out of town, b/c alot of places are shown during the week and the listings may not be updated.
I would recommend that you sell your car. Parking is easily $300 - $400 per month. DH and I were thinking of buying a car, but joined Zipcar instead. It is great!
Manhattan is expensive, but I agree with another poster that it may be less than renting in Queens or Brooklyn, owning a car, commuting, etc. HTH!!

Re: apartment rent in NYC
Our rent is $2900 for a 1bdrm with a great kitchen and closet space in a 5 year old building with 24 hour doorman.
Parking for a small sedan is another $400 per month.
We live in a great neighborhood too.
