Yes, for all organs that are needed. I've made sure DH as well as my family are well aware of my wishes so that there are no arguements when the time comes.

Wow Janet .. That is amazing to know. You must be so proud

at first it never even crossed my mind. but after i got the news that my angel was gone on that tuesday, i sat there and was crying my eyes out. then all of a sudden i stopped, ran to the nursing desk and said call the donor network. I was in shocked on what had happen as i went outside as they made the calls. i calmed down realizing that keith made that thought happen to me. I swear this is the truth. it litterally poped into my head. on that sunday his levels of meds(that where keeping him "alive") dropped enough that they can go about preping him for the donation at 12 midnight they started and by 4 am like i said i was in a VERY hard place with my grief, but at the same time knowing we just saved 3 livesChat Icon

Re: Are you an Organ Donor?

I checked the box on my license after my father was the successful recipient of a kidney transplant.

i don't do it, since in my religion we're not suppose to cut the body open. how u entered this world is how you're suppose to leave this world

I actually researched this after my father had his transplant, b/c that was my understanding of Judaism, and it didn't sit well with me that I wasn't supposed to donate, yet my father could be a recipient. Since I'm conservative, I researched the views of the conservative movement, and was happy to discover that it is now not only accepted, but encouraged.

Not trying to push my personal beliefs at all, but I thought you might be interested.

I used to think this as well until I worked at an Ophthalmologists office and saw first hand the affect that an organ donor of eyes can do. I saw a 19 year old man get the corneas of another young man that was killed in an automobile accident. He was rewarded the gift of sight through his donor. If it wasn't for that other person, who knows how long this 19 year old would have waited to see again. I have since changed my donation approval to include EVERYTHING.

Once I die, I won't be needing anything. Please give it to someone who can.

Re: Are you an Organ Donor?

I am an organ donor. I checked this box off many years ago when I first received my driver's license. I can't think of a better way to celebrate my life and passing than giving someone else a chance as a longer life.

I am also a bone marrow donor. I've been on the registry for 2 years and haven't matched anyone so far.

We did a LOT of discussion about this in one of my Jewish studies classes. One popular belief is that you cna donate an organ toa specific person, but it is not acceptable to just donate and not know where it goes (not that you would know anyway, but the family). I guess the rationale behind this is that when it's being donated to a person it's preserving human life (which in my understanding trumps all other Jewish laws), but if it's just donated, you don't know if it will be used for science, desecrated, etc.

As for the question, like Sandra I have just not been able to check that box.

Re: Are you an Organ Donor?

I am an Organ Donor...I'm also on the list for Bone Marrow if there is ever a match for me...and I donate platelets regularly.
I think that we should do whatever we can for those who are really sick, we don't know how lucky we are.

Re: Are you an Organ Donor?

i think this is a very big decision and i have not made it yet.

i would most definatly donate my heart, liver, kidney..... but not so sure about other organs.

i once heard (dont know if this is true or not) that they are more likely to take you off of lifesupport if you are a donor and that really scares me.

that is true BUT for 1 minute... that's to test the brain, breathing. if for 1 min the side person does not do it on there own, they are put back on life support untill they are ready to go in for the recovery of the organs.

keith was pronounces at 10 in the morning after doing the 1 min test. and at 12 that night they took him from me to the or and then after they start, is when the machine is turned off. they have a certin amount of time to have it all done with. so the said person is "gone" already and there is no suffering or pain.Chat Icon

Re: Are you an Organ Donor?

Yes, I am a donor. DH is not & he claims it is his religious upbringing. (cannot desecrate a body). After watching last nights EM he wants to change that & become a donor.
