Are you planning to vaccinate?
I'm only 6 weeks and starting my research. I will probably end up vaccinating bc my child will be in daycare but I'm hoping to stagger the vaccinations.

Are you planning to vaccinate?
I vaccinated my DS but his peds office staggared them so he wouldn't be getting more then 2 pricks in a visit. They also held off on the mmr and chicken pox shot until 15 months. I also could have (but didnt) have them delay the chicken pox until 18 months. DS was born at 33 weeks and weighted 4lb 11 oz when he was born so i was concerned and contimplating delaying them a little longer so they went more with his adjusted age, but by 2 months old actual age, he was caught up weight wise so I felt comfortable starting then.
This time around i will be doing the same thing.

Are you planning to vaccinate?
Yes we will be fully vaccinating our children. We are just going to give them one shot at a time though.
I thought about it, and DH and I have both been fully vaccinated so we would feel very guilty not giving our children the same benefit we had.

I definitely am; there have recently been outbreaks of all crazy diseases and I do not want my child to be exposed to a possible deadly disease. To each his own!

Yes, without a doubt. I think its selfish and harmful for a mother to put their child in danger by not vaccinating them.

Ditto. But this topic always has the potential for some good My dd had 3 sets of shots at her 2 month visit. It hit her 4 hours later and she was screaming in pain and her legs swelled up at the injection sites. Yes, it's painful to watch her go through all that, but regardless, she will get her next scheduled shots at 4 months. These viruses and diseases are becoming prevalent again bc of parents not vaccinating IMO.

With my DD I fully vaccinated her on schedule, I didn't delay anything. I will be doing the same with this baby.

I disagree with your opinion. I think there are people with legitimate reasons for delaying. I don't think anyone on these boards can tell me why an hours old baby needs a hep b vaccine at the hospital if it does not have any risk factors for same.

I never said I wouldn't delay a vaccine or its wrong to delay a vaccine. I think its wrong to not vaccinate at all. I personally do not plan on having my baby vaccinated right after he is born.

Isn't there more than one dose of Hep B? Is it possible that Hep B causes the least side effects and perhaps in order to avoid multiple vacc's at later visits, the first dose of this one is offered in the hospital so it's not doubled up with another one later in the recommended schedule? I am just thinking out loud....

Re: Are you planning to vaccinate?
DD got all of her shots ontime, however I separated the chicken pox and mmr. She got the chicken pox at 13 months and the mmr at 16 months.
I think vaccinations are important. To each her own, but I don't think that it's selfish for someone to choose not to vax their child. People have their own reasons for doing things.

An hours old baby does NOT need the hep b vaccine, which is why you can refuse to have the hospital administer it and have your ped do it. Thats what I did with DD and DS and will do it with this LO as well.

Re: Are you planning to vaccinate?
I'm not trying to start any drama. I'm just seriously unsure about vaccinations and my family members in the medical field feel the same. I don't understand why kids need 6 shots in one visit. I'm prone to allergic reactions and if my baby has one I want to know what caused it. That being said I'm trying to research the pros and cons of each shot. Another thing I'm researching is hospitals putting silver nitrate in children's eyes. Several websites I read said they do at birth and that is something I'm 100% against. I don't see a positive there.

Re: Are you planning to vaccinate?
This argument always gets emotionally charged, because everyone has anecdotal evidence to support both sides. As long as everyone stays respectful, we can save the for the parenting board.
To the OP - Check out the Dr Sears Vaccine Book.
We fully vaccinate, but on a slower schedule. DD never gets more than one shot/vaccine at a time. I plan to do the same with this baby. I believe in vaccinations but think the American schedule is very aggressive, especially when compared to other industrialized nations.

As far as I know the silver nitrate is to lessen the risk of infection from the amniotic fluid and possible meconium as well. I have a close family friend who is an opthamoligst and he said that while its a personal choice, having it is better then the possibilities from infection (blindness being one of them)
The newer shots are combo vaccines - the pediarix vaccine for example covers for diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B and polio. Before they combined it that was three separate shots a baby had to get (dtap, hep b, polio) instead of getting pricked three times, now its just once. I completely understand about the concern about reactions though.
Unfortunately this is always a drama thread whether you intended it to be or not. Vaccines are a completly personal choice. Do your research from reliable sources (because there are plenty out there that are VERY biased) and make the decision based on what you are most comfortable with for your child.
Good luck.

I did the same thing. When I asked what the hep b vaccine was for, the ped told me if there is a chance the mother does not know she has hep b (doesn't receive prenatal care) by giving the vaccine at birth, it can help prevent the baby from possibly contracting it. I opted to wait for dd to get it.
