Baby hearing... if your newborn failed the hospital test

My son Dylan failed the hearing test in his left ear in the hospital. They did the test twice.

It was repeated at the peds office and he failed again.

So now we have to go to Miller Place to have him tested.

The ped thinks he just has some fluid in his ear from his birth.

Just wondering... if your newborn failed in the hospital... was all okay later and he passed later??? Chat Icon

My DS failed the first test but they told me it was very common for newborns to fail the first test. DS passed the second test & his hearing is fine now.

Re: Baby hearing... if your newborn failed the hospital test

My 6 month old son failed the newborn hearing screening twice in the hospital, and then again 2 weeks later. From there, we were told we would have to go for a more in depth diagnostic hearing test. We had this test done and he still failed and the audiologist told us that this ABR diagnostic test would have bypassed any fluid and diagnosed him with severe hearing loss and told us to get fitted for hearing aids. We decided to get a second opinion just to be sure, and when we went there, the test showed that his hearing was a little improved. So it looked like fluid could be a possibility after all. 4 months and 3 hearing tests later, my son has completely normal hearing. It was fluid along that for some reason took 4 months to clear out, when it typically one takes a day or 2, or a few weeks on the late end. I'm glad I didn't listen to the first audiologist that told us fluid wouldn't be a cause and that he would have severe hearing loss for life. Hoping it's fluid for you too! Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions in the future.

wow thanks! So glad to hear that it cleared up for your son and i can't believe it took 4 months to do. Good thing you listened to your mommy gut and got a 2nd opinion.

I'll definitely be keeping your story in mind. Thank you. Chat Icon

The hospital gave us 2 places to choose from that had the test needed.

Sound Therapeutics in Miller Place

or

Stony BRook Speech, Language & Hearing in East Setauket

have you been to either? Where did you end up going and where did you get your 2nd opinion from?

Ali, you can also check with the Long Island Speech-Language Hearing Association to see if they have recommendations. (www.lisha.org). Good luck!

Re: Baby hearing... if your newborn failed the hospital test

I just wanted to recommend the Hearing & Speech Center at LIJ hospital in New Hyde Park. They are the BEST at what they do, and when my daughter was born with a malformed ear that has no ear canal, every doctor I spoke with recommended that center.

My DD sees an ENT there, as well as has had 2 ABR tests there and will soon be fitted for a hearing device.

Good luck!

Re: Baby hearing... if your newborn failed the hospital test

I used to do these tests in the hospital. They are not very accurate tests. You need a baby to be completely still, which we all know is nearly impossible. Then there is the fluid in the ears, which is very common in newborns.

I can't remember the exact number of babies I had that failed, but lets say it was 100, out of the 100 I think 1 had slight hearing problems.

Try not to worry. Chat Icon

Re: Baby hearing... if your newborn failed the hospital test

My Son failed, and then failed in the peds office and has had several ABRs, two of them sedated.

He has a known hearing impairment, but it is a lot better then they originally suspected. He has a mild loss in one ear and normal hearing in the other.

The loss is so mild that they don't think hearing aids will help. In your case, if it's a loss in only one ear, our ENT has repeatedly told us that most kids, even if entirely deaf in one ear, will develop normally. So, although I'm sure your son will pass the follow-up since most kids do, even if he doesn't it doesn't always mean hearing aids. Chat Icon Chat Icon that he does well in the followup.

DS #2 failed at birth and then passed at the follow up a few weeks later....

He was a c-section and they said sometimes all the fluid doesn't get "pushed out" Chat Icon

Re: Baby hearing... if your newborn failed the hospital test

Thanks ladies!!!! Yeah the NP seemed to think it was the fluid from birth (all the white stuff they're coated in).

I'm not too worried yet. I try not to worry unless there is a (definite) reason to worry so i'll wait a few weeks and have him tested. See what they say then.

Thanks everyone for sharing your stories with me. Chat Icon
