Back from my first appointment and SO UPSET with the Dr.
Ok this is my first baby so I have no idea what is normal or not.
I went to the first appointment and I just felt SO overwhelmed. They threw paperwork at me and barely answered questions. They did a Pap and then that was it.
no blood work and no internal sonogram. I want to know that everything is going ok.. that there is a heartbeat.. etc. I cried hysterical the entire way home and I still am (blame the hormones)
They said they don't do a sonogram until 20 weeks. I dont know what to think and I just feel so let down right now. I was so excited to tell my parents today and now I dont even want to because I dont know whats going on.
ETA: I am @ 8 weeks...

that is kind of weird that they don't do sonograms until 20 weeks. I got a sonogram at 7w3days to detect the heartbeat and another one at 13 weeks. What doctor do you use?

I find that odd and you shouldn't leave upset! Most OBs do 1st trimester bloodwork as part of one of the first appointments. How far along are you? Often they will do a sono at 8 weeks and then an Ultrascreen/Nuchal Translucency at 12w.

Re: Back from my first appointment and SO UPSET with the Dr.
To be honest, sounds very odd.
When I went for my first appt, they did a sonogram, went through all the "do's and dont's" and asked DH and I if we had any questions.
I am sorry you had a bad experience. I can understand if they told you to not come in until a certain # of weeks, but since you were there, I am surprised they did not do a full exam
I had sono's at 7wks, 9wks, 12wks, 16wks and my next one is at 20wks.

Re: Back from my first appointment and SO UPSET with the Dr.
Oh, I'm so sorry!!!
I would go to a different doctor honestly. I have never heard of any doctor not doing a sono until 20w. That's not right??? You have every right to want to know if everything is ok. I would definitely not be ok with what they told you. I'm sure someone on here can recommend a nice doctor for you!
ETA (again): My first appt. was just for a sonogram. I haven't even had any blood work yet. That's at my "nurse's" appt. Then I get to go again for my first OB appt.
I'd recommend my Doctor but I'm in NC!

That does not sound right at all! They should have AT LEAST done bloodwork, and you definitely should have had a sonogram to confirm that everything is looking good, too. To be honest with you, this would be grounds for me to find another OB. I'm so sorry that you are upset!

Re: Back from my first appointment and SO UPSET with the Dr.
Well my Dr's office doesn't draw blood onsite and he didn't give me the script for my labs until my 10 week appt so that doesn't sound too strange.
However, I had a sono at 8 weeks and again at 10 weeks. I find that part odd- waiting for the 20 week appointment for the first sono? Very strange.
If you are not comfortable now is the time to switch- before you start going to too many appts....
Maybe look for a new Dr.

Re: Back from my first appointment and SO UPSET with the Dr.
I didnt think it sounded right.. and I even cried in the office. I told them I wanted to know my baby had a heartbeat and was measuring correctly and all she said was "your body is carrying this pregnancy - you shouldnt think otherwise" great.. really
anyone have a GOOD doctor associated with Stonybrook?

Hmmm I'm no expert here since this is my first baby. But I think your experience wasn't the norm. Your pretty far along and I think they should have given you a sono.
usually at 6 weeks and under the doctor does not do much because anything can happen at that point.

I would make an appt with a new dr asap. This sounds so wierd, by 8w they can do a sono to detect the heartbeat.

Re: Back from my first appointment and SO UPSET with the Dr.
I would switch to a different OBGYN. IMO you want to feel comfortable and be reassured with your doctor. You're going to spend the next 9 months being examined by him or her and you want to feel comfortable enought to talk to them about any issues, questions, etc.
I had my first appt at 8 weeks during which they confirmed the pregnancy and my first sono was at 9 weeks. Followed up by Level 1 at 12 weeks and Level 2 at 20 weeks. Some doctors don't like to perform frequent sonograms but the above is the minimal they do.

Re: Back from my first appointment and SO UPSET with the Dr.
My doctor does blood work and a pap at the first appointment. Second appointment is the sono at 8 weeks or so. Then you hear the heartbeat through external doppler at 12 and 16 weeks. Next sono isn't until 20 weeks.
I would get a different doc.

Re: Back from my first appointment and SO UPSET with the Dr.
I'm sorry you had such a bad appointment
I know my doctor's office doesn't do blood work. They only did for me because i specifically requested it due to an earlier miscarriage.
But the sono sounds very strange to me. I had one at 6 weeks and then 10w5d. If you don't feel comfortable with this doctor and feel that they will just brush you off then it's time to find another doctor. There is no need for them to be making you this upset!

Re: Back from my first appointment and SO UPSET with the Dr.
I would switch dr's if I were you. My OB did a sono at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, 20 weeks and a growth sono at 32. I think you should definitely have a sono at 8 weeks, that seems pretty standard!

Re: Back from my first appointment and SO UPSET with the Dr.
I think my dr did the sono at 8 weeks (internal).
I go to Three Village Women's Health and they are affiliated with Stonybrook. They've been excellent so far. Every doctor I've seen is patient and answers all of my questions.
I'm sorry they were like that to you. Just know that you are ok and I'm sure baby is fine. I would go to another Dr.

Re: Back from my first appointment and SO UPSET with the Dr.
My best friend lives out of state. She gets one sonogram at 20 weeks. That's it. Her doctor didn't even see her until 10 weeks and used a doppler to hear the heartbeat.

Re: Back from my first appointment and SO UPSET with the Dr.
Get a new doctor!!!! There are tests that are to be done in the beginning. 20 weeks is way to long to see if everything is going ok.

I would look for a new dr. I think that is very strange that they didn't try to find the hb at least, and I've never heard of an ob not doing a sono to establish the pregnancy and the gestational age.

Yeah, I would find a new doctor.... I had some complications, so I had a bunch of sonos early on. But, at my first real appt, I had bloodwork and a sono...
Sorry you had to leave upset today

Get a new doctor!
I had light brown spotting when I was probably around 6 weeks and they did a sono to see that there was a sac! I again had a sono at 9 weeks and got a picture. It doesn't seem right that they are making you wait until 20 weeks.

That's wierd....I always got a sonogram at my first appointment so they could measure the baby and see the heartbeat.

I had the SAME situation. Also, I agree with the other girls, even if you didn't have a sono right away, you should at least have one around 12 weeks for the NT!!!
I know a lot of girls go to Three Village Women's Health, that practice is associated with SB. Good luck!

Re: Back from my first appointment and SO UPSET with the Dr.
Sorry u r upset hun....
My first OB appt they did the pee test- and sono to confirm preg- also made sure they saw a heartbeat since it's too early to hear- (they did this for both my pregnancies @ 8 wks-) and then scdle me for an OB profile where they take lots of blood lol then @12 wks I had another sono again to see heartbeat- then I had my Ultrascreen @ 14 wks- I go to OB next wk for my 16wk checkup- not everytime they will use the sono- mostly doplar from now on until like 20 wk and then I remember one or 2 at the end for growth.... I would change Dr's - just a thought.
