Simple solution... don't go.
Not everyone has the money to lay out for a restaraunt or catering hall.

sorry..i have to agree

Re: Backyard Parties Vent

I love backyard parties as well as parties in restaurants/halls, however when I dont want to be somewhere I stay the hell home! I would hope someone with that kind of attitude would not come to one of my parties, bc they feel like they "have to"

I don't get why everything has to be a big party to invite everyone. This one's 'moving up' ceremony, that one's 11th birthday, the other one's confirmation... I don't remember my Mom having all sorts of parties for my sister and I growing up.

It’s easy to say ‘just don’t go’ but people expect you to go. I admit I am anti social Chat Icon

I would prefer a backyard to a restaurant, though.

Oh Kara! This makes me feel guilty.Chat Icon

I tend to throw parties for a lot of things.. most birthdays, christenings, pre-k graduation, Rob's graduation, etc.. I like to entertain, I like to make mundane moments feel special and I am so happy to have a house and a yard that allow me to indulge in these things. I put a lot of effort into making my friends and family feel welcome and comfortable in my home. I don't expect gifts - and more often than not I will even tell people that their presence is present enough. I like to think that most of my regulars enjoy our parties - they keep coming back! But now I sorta feel like I should maybe back off a bit with the celebrations.Chat Icon

As to the OP - I prefer to entertain in my own backyard because it tends to be less expensive and I get to cook for my guests! I like to create and prepare menus for my parties. I always have my house open with the AC on if people get too uncomfortable. I like going to BBQ's and backyard parties so much more than restaurants when it comes to close friends and family.

For what it's worth, I would MUCH rather have someone tell me that they didn't want to go to my party than to secretly resent me or come grudgingly. Chat Icon

ditto

never had a restaurant or catering hall party once growing up. my parents just a)didn't see the sense in spending the money and b)preferred having a barbecue and casual atmosphere.

i love backyard parties--you can walk around and mingle a lot of times easier than in a restaurant. kids can run around and have fun....and no need to wait for some waiter to bring you food & drink....you get it yourself.

no time limits on backyard parties either---don't have to worry about being there from 12 pm - 4 pm sharp!

I guess it's a good thing you're not on my invite list then...practically all of my parties are in my yard! Chat Icon

Oh, and I actually prefer them that way...much more personal, KWIM?

Us too... every party is in our backyard. The kids enjoy it so much and everyone can just relax

I also don't think they are a cheaper alternative to restaurant parties I think they can cost just as much if not more. Besides them not being cheap the host has a lot more work to do.

when you throw a backyard party for me--i only require greasey cheese burgers, your pool, and beer

i'm a cheap date

well if thats the case, im going to buy a blow up pool right now

Awww!! That's so sweet!!! Don't mind me - I am TOTALLY in the minority, and I know this about myself!! I think it's so sweet that you want to do that for your kids and I totally get it and think it's really cool! Don't mind my anti-social behaviors... Chat Icon

See, that's what a certain family member of mine doesn't 'get' - they get all "POed" if we don't go. Dean owns a retail store that RELIES solely on the summer. He starts work at 6am Sat and Sunday and gets home at 5pm and we really just want to spend some time together when he gets home... I'm sorry, did I make this all about me??? Chat Icon

Really??? I love them! What I like best is that you can get up and move around, talk to different people and bring your plate of food with you wherever you go. At a restaurant, you can't do that!

Heck I would love to have a backyard to have a party in in the first place!

I also have to disagree...I LOVE backyard parties. They are so relaxed and you are not rushed from course to course. And for the kids it is great that they can run around and play.

i love backyard parties & especially love having them. Sometimes I try to limit the number of people we invite so its not too much for them & usually they will be annoyed when they find out. They say our backyard is better than their own so they'd rather be here playing in the lake.

LOVE backyard parties...Especially now that I have a son who doesn't want to be "restrained" in a highchair at a restaurant for too long.

We threw a housewarming party, my SIL's bridal shower, My DS' Christening all in the backyard. If DS wasn't a Jan. Baby ALL his bday parties would be held back there too.
We have BBQs every summer. Oh, we even all met back here for a party for my brother & SILs bachelor/bachelorette party...THAT was a blast as well as all other parties I have thrown. The most I have had back there was about 80 people.Chat Icon
We have already said that DS' Communion, Confirmation, etc. will be held out in the yard. I can have even more guests because it's affordable.

Love house parties. You can dress comfy. You are not rushed. You can relax with your guests.Chat Icon

Very good point Jax. I could only WISH this was something for me to complain about. I am just excited that I am now healthy about to go out for celebrations.

People cannot predict nor control the weather.

If you don't want to go, don't go.

I wouldn't have a party for kids in a restaurant.

The party is for the kids...kids want to run and play. If your inconvienced, oh well.

Just say no to the invite.

Agreed. I would take a backyard bbq with greasy cheeseburgers & yummy hotdogs over restaurant food & bad service anyday-- Especially in the summer.
