Re: Backyard Parties Vent

I dont know that I'd want to go to a "dressed up" event in a backyard like a shower, where my hair needs to stay looking good in this type of weather. I definitely enjoy a backyard dressy party in Spring or Fall, though. But summer, it can get a little brutal.

But if its a nice, relaxed party, I love a backyard bbq! And I agree with the other posters about them not being cheap. I always wind up spending buckets of money on my BBQs as I'm sure everyone else does.

No offense, but are you a regular poster using a fake name? You have all of 5 posts with two of them being "vents" about very specific things. Not to mention, you've been around since March of 07.

wow....u would soooooooooo hate being my friend! lmao...
Halloween...up to 175 people in my yard,,yup--thats right!
bbqs all the time for no reason...southern party--deep friend turkeys-jamaican jerk chicken--first day of summer...birthdays--you name it!
in fact my sisters shower is here in 2 weeks---125 invited...
I love my yard-love entertaining-love my margarita machine and we all love dancing to cheesy old songs...
so much better then spending money on a good party and celebrating nice things...
halls I hate!!!!!!!!!
no waterguns===no slurpee machines--theres a time limit--and a bar tab.
if I had it my way I would do it every weekend.
whoever comes comes...the more the merrier...

Nice!!! I would so come to one of your parties!

I don't get why everything has to be a big party to invite everyone. This one's 'moving up' ceremony, that one's 11th birthday, the other one's confirmation... I don't remember my Mom having all sorts of parties for my sister and I growing up.

It’s easy to say ‘just don’t go’ but people expect you to go. I admit I am anti social Chat Icon

I would prefer a backyard to a restaurant, though.

I never feel I "have to" go. I invite people and that's OK if they cannot come for whatever reason. Such is life!

I like backyard BBQ as long as shade is provided. But honestly, it's up to you to come or not. You don't have to go if you cannot stand the heat. But you cannot "force" someone to have a party in an indoor venue just because this is what you like.

This is the summer. Kids want to run, adults want to lounge outside. I like offering the alternative of opening the house for those who want to cool down but find that most people want to stay outside anyway. Yet, those inside get bored because everybody else is inside.

For what it's worth, I would MUCH rather have someone tell me that they didn't want to go to my party than to secretly resent me or come grudgingly. Chat Icon

ITA. I can't imagine if I had invited OP and she/he did not like my party and complained here. And I would have thought she/he had a great time. I would wonder why they came in the first place.

I love outside parties. Of course if it's super hot like right now...not so much. But that is what a cold drink and some shade is for, I wouldn't not go.

Great post. I agree. I too really like a beginning and an end (as a host and on some occassions, even as a guest). Why do I like this? For example...

We recently went to a house party/outside party of my DH's cousin. We drove 1.5 hrs to get there, then sat there for over 3 hrs while she gabbed and drank wine. She decided to COOK (make baked ziti, why she couldn't have that prepared and just pop it in the oven is beyond me) about 4 hrs into the party, then asked why we were leaving? We had already sat there 4 hrs, practically starving, wondering when she is going to have the "food", then had to drive another 1.5 hrs home, leading to an over 7 hr day. We had to get home to our dogs and just were done with sitting there. We were starving the whole party and she is such a terrible hostess to be honest, that we didn't go to her next party, which is a shame but the last event was sheer torture.

Another story, my friend also did something similar to what I describe above. She had a bbq on a Friday night. We sat there over 2.5 hours and she started cooking after 9pm (when all the guests were there for at least 2+ hrs). It was ridiculous. We know it was her intent to have the guests stay forever (she is like that), we always remember that night as how she dragged things out way too much! We were starving, we had all come after work and who wants to wait until 9pm to eat? We barely even wanted to eat at that point, having eaten so many chips and whatnot. Needless to say, we dread going to any bbq's of hers again. It's kind of a turnoff when you have to eat before going to a party simply b/c the hosts don't take time into acct and you don't know when the food will come out, yet you want to go to support that event/friend, etc.

You brought a good point.

We have DS' 1st birthday party in a little bit over 1 week and the original time was 2pm for a backyard BBQ party.

We decided to pull in and do it at 1pm instead.

I hate those afternoon meals myself. Nobody wants to eat lunch at 2pm or wait 3 hours to eat dinner.

That's my main issue with not having a designated start and end, when people don't keep track of how long guests are actually sitting there and may want to eat. But that doesn't seem to be the OP's complaint.

But a good bbq or house party is fine by me, again, as long as there is shade and seats enough for everyone.

Re: Backyard Parties Vent

all depends on the hosts

i hate when there is no food out except chips and i have to wait hours for the meal

however if its in the shade, the drinks arae flowing and the appetizers are plentiful, i dont mind waiting, also having a seat is a plus too

Simple solution... don't go.
Not everyone has the money to lay out for a restaraunt or catering hall.

Right on...
