Basement flooding!
We bought this house 3 months ago and since then we've flooded 4 times, twice yesterday (im in Queens). Im so done with this, I can't clean up sewer water anymore.
Its literally sh!twater. I called a plumber he checked and said there is a check valve and we put in a sump pump, nothing else we can really do from our side of it. We also snaked the main sewer line under our house and sent a camera down and it was clear, no blockages. I called the DEP and they sent someone to check the main street sewer and they claim its fine. That cant be, everytime it rains my street looks like a river, nothing drains.
Im ready to sell this house and not look back. We have spent $1,000 so far and we STILL are getting the same amount of sewer water. I have my dining room set floating in sewer water, its brand new. Im so depressed, I feel like everyone is giving me the run around and I cant get a straight answer.
Everyone on my block said they get water in their basement... that is not normal, no? The city of course is no help, I sent an email out, we'll see what happens. Im thinking to do a petition if that'll help.
Any advice?

this happens to my ILs as well, but more recently (over last 1-2 years), FIL has been really looking at the foundation of the house, repairing any cracks, redid backyard (put down paver stones instead of the grass that was there since it just absorbed all the moisture) and things have been better
im not sure where you live or what surrounds your house (grass vs. cement? is it a brick house? hows the foundation? is the backyard pitched so the water flows AWAY from the house), but i would suggest maybe asking a contractor for their opinion

Basement flooding!
My parents have this issue and are in Middle Village. It is constantly happening and it's almost like nothing can be done. She is heartbroken each time. DEP just comes and says nothing can be done and that is happening to the entire block. They are full of bull. The City has said that the 32 inch pipe in the ground cannot handle the water. They need to put in a bigger one, but they are taking their sweet time.

I'm in Middle Village too, and have the same issue. It really is annoying. As soon as it rains I know that my basement is now a pool.

Basement flooding!
Im in Maspeth. I'm drafting a petition right now so all the neighbors can sign it. Im also callig the community board. I hate to say it but all of my neighbors are older people who are tired and care less. I talk to them about it and they say its been happening since they can remember and they just learned to not keep anything of value in their basements. WTH? That is just lousy. My eyes are swollen from crying, I want to pack everything and leave!

I have all cement in the backyard. It actually only coming from 2 places the front of the basement which is closest to the street, and the 1/2 bath in the middle of the basement :(

Growing up in Astoria, our basement apartment would flood if it rained really heavy. It was ground level in the back, but down from the street in the front. To stop water from coming up thru the toilet, we would put a sandbag in it, and also put one over the sink drain. The tub had a window over it and we would run a pump hose out the window. There wasn't much else we could do - it was a combination of the water running down from the roof and the storm sewers in the street that made the water come up. A lot of our neighbors had the same problem during really heavy rainstorms. Good luck with the city - definitly contact your local councilperson and go higher up if you can.

Re: Basement flooding!
Are you sure its sewer water?
Water seeps into our basement, its because of the water table and its a known thing where I live. Our basments are not finished, we have a washer, dryer, bathroom down there but everything is raised and we have only had issues during major hurricanes where any damage was done (this has happened 3 times in over 40 years)
For about $10K we were told we could put a french drain around the perimeter of the basement
For about $40K we could dig out the entire foundation of the house, and build some kind of space for the water to drain.
We are just dealing with it though.
My IL's have the same issue but they have an apartment down there - they have three pumps and never get more than some "moisture" no more flooding now.
Good Luck!

Well it has a bad smell and it's dirty it also has floating objects in the water, so I'm assuming it's sewer water.
