Pls. And if you left him in the middle of Pennsylvania station while you went to pee someone would be calling child services on you

Do what you gotta do

Mine is almost 9. At a place like that If I’m alone they’re coming with me. Period.

Someone would call CPS and believe me, you would likely get in trouble with CPS for having left them unattended.

But why? What exactly is the danger here?

I think we’re doing a vast disservice to society by acting as if there danger around every corner.

And don't you think that you'd be long gone before ACS even got there? That whole idea is ridiculous

Ok obv acs isn’t coming to penn station. My point is that I’m sure some people would make a huge stink about it. Walk him over to the police etc. And they should. Sorry but if a kid isn’t used to the hustle and bustle and hectic nature of certain places, there’s no need to let them be unattended where for those five minutes of waiting on line and running to the bathroom you’d have to worry if you’re peeing fast enough to get back out there to him before something happens.

Multiple people here are saying that you’ll have cps called on you, and I’m just struggling to find the actual danger in leaving a 10 year old, non-special needs child for 5 minutes. Especially as there is a police stand right there.

What exactly is the danger or negligence?

Yes obviously acs would not be there in 5 min but if something happened to that child while you are in the bathroom at Penn and the child is waiting outside, everyone would be singing a different tune here. Everyone would be saying what kind of parent leaves a 10 yr old unattended in Penn Station...

But that isn’t what was posted. The response was saying someone would call CPS if you left a 10yr old unattended. Which is highly unlikely and actually weird for a stranger in Manhattan to approach a 10+ yr old child. This statement is false. If this was the case, there would be hundreds of thousands of cases and calls a year in NYC about big kids walking around by themselves.

Now the peanut galleries opinions after something happens is a totally different topic.

Only on this forum does a public bathroom equate to the wild Wild west and a rager. I must visit these public bathrooms that are so out of control Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: I also don’t get the contradiction. Men/women’s bathroom should be combined but I also wouldn’t send my kid alone in the bathroom because it’s dangerous.Chat Icon

There are single person bathrooms all over the place. Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, etc.

Just use one of those. That's what DH does when he's out alone with DD's

I might have a crusty old hoo ha, but I don't think it's appropriate for a 10 year old boy to be in the ladies room. Sorry - I don't feel comfortable with it.

If you are in a stall though- why?
What could the child be seeing?
Are you worried he will crawl under the stall and see something?

I am just uncomfortable with it. I don't care about someone "seeing something." I won't even pee in front of my husband.

To reverse it - would everyone be ok with a little girl going into a men's room?

The safety of someone's child trumps you being uncomfortable with a KID in the bathroom.

OP............do what is best for your child and who really cares what other people think about it. My son is only 6 and there is NO way I would let him in a bathroom alone, not now and not anytime in the foreseeable future.

This 100%.

Yeah, 6 is too young to go in alone.

And I'll add that I hope there isn't a mom in doubt who is swayed by quoted poster. Parenting is hard enough without having to listen to people saying that they're uncomfortable with young boys in the women's bathroom. Ridiculous.

As far as the actual question goes, it depends on the location. DS just turned 9. In Penn, no way would I let him stand outside alone while I went in, but I might let him go in the boy's bathroom alone. There is only one way out and if he was gone too long I'd have no issue walking in there looking for him.

We just went to Disney - only the two of us - and I explained beforehand that he was going to have to come into the ladies room with me. He understood the logic because he's been there often enough to know how busy it is.

At smaller establishments like a restaurant I probably would let him sit at a table if I had to go to the bathroom. This just happened at McDonald's - we had been out a while and I had to go so he waited at a booth.

Yea, OPs son was 10. You can’t compare a 6yr old to a 10yr old. You don’t know what you would do or let them do until your kid reaches that age.

Fortunately, OP didnt have to deal with that and went home with no pee emergencies!

My DD is 10.5 yrs old, it would be a cold day in hell before I'd let her in the bathroom alone at Penn Station. That being said, the same will hold true for my son.

I have no problem with a 10 year old coming into the rest room. Like pp said there are stalls and privacy. We are trying to teach our kids about gender and how you can identify as whatever you want. There is a boy in my childs class that prefers to wear pink, have long hair, play with the girls, etc. My hope is that child can go where he feels comfortable not where society feels comfort.
I hope the idea of boys/girls in different restrooms becomes history.

I agree. I see no need for separate men's and women's rest rooms at all in this day and age. It's archaic if you ask me.

I was at a rooftop bar in Brooklyn recently. It was at the top of a hotel. It was during the day and some people had kids there. The bathrooms were unisex. I didn't notice it until I was washing my hands and saw a man walk in. That's when I noticed these signs on the door. Chat Icon

New restaurants/bars etc. are all going the way of unisex bathrooms which I think is great. I was recently at Blend on the Water in LIC and they had a unisex bathroom with all stalls and a bathroom attendant.
