birth cert. question
This just came up yesterday with my parents..
I just moved out 4 months ago, and I now need my birth cert. to get my marriage license. As of now, my parents still have it only bc I forgot to take it. They're now saying that after I get my marriage license they want my birth certificate back bc of "sentimental value", and that I need to pay to get a certified copy.
So my question is, do you have your original certificate? A certified copy? Did your parents keep the original? Are my parents just odd?

Re: birth cert. question
I have a certified copy, but that's only because my mom is the WORST and has lost my BC maybe 4 times. I don't think my parents have a copy of any of my papers...

Re: birth cert. question
My mom gave me the original birth cert.
as soon as I moved out.. she was thrilled
not to be responsible for it (along with my
christening cert & anything else important)
ps: there are 9 kids in my family so she was
like "one more down....next"

birth cert. question
I have my original birth certificate, as well as my baptismal certificate. My mom gave them to me before we got married and didn't ask for them back.

birth cert. question
I have my original. You're the one that will need it for things, not your parents. I'm a sentimental person, but I think that's a little silly. Give them the certified copy if they really want your birth certificate

Re: birth cert. question
My mom is very sentimental but I have all my own important papers.
I'm an only child and she actually gave me some of her own stuff to hold onto!
I think your parents are wrong here.

Re: birth cert. question
I have my original as well as DH's original. No issues or problems with our families about keeping it. If anything, I'm sure my mom was glad to not have the responsibility of holding onto it.

Re: birth cert. question
WHAAAAA??????????
I think you need to explain to them that YOU need the original, you MUST have the original for legal things in your life. You need the original document.
I think they are being completely unreasonable.

Yes, they are being unreasonable but you don't NEED the original, she can pay to have a certified copy and it's the same thing.

Its easy to get a copy and just let your parents hold on to the original
