Re: birth cert. question
I don't have it. DH has a certified copy of his, which he ordered in order to get a passport. I already had a passport so I just renewed. I haven't ever asked my mom for my birth certificate because I haven't needed it at all.
Are you in NY State? You shouldn't need your birth certificate to get a marriage license.

I have my original - wasn't an issue with my parents. They gave it to me when I moved out after college.

Re: birth cert. question
As the person who the document refers to, YOU should be the one to hold it. Why should you have to have a copy if the original still exists?
If she wants one so badly, tell her to get the copy
weird

Re: birth cert. question
My mom isn't sentimental with these things but I believe she has it, I think its just I never asked for it. I haven't needed it in awhile so just assumed I'd let her hold on to it.
I don't think I needed it for my marriage license, right?

Honestly I think they're being ridiculous, and I have no intention of returning it-if they want a copy they don't even need my permission to get one lol
And I think you girls are from the city right? We just got the license, and Nassau county required the original birth certificates

I got mine at the NYC marriage bureau in Manhattan. I didn't know that Nassau required a birth certificate.
I could see my mom being like yours, wanting to keep it.

Re: birth cert. question
I had my original but when I applied for a passport they told me it was too beat up to read- apparently my mom had stored it folded and the fold mark obscurred som vital info or something. So I had to get a certified copy. Now i have both.

Re: birth cert. question
My mom gave it to me when I was young and I lost it along with my SS card. I have a copy from town hall, DH has it I think.
I'm always odd man out but I would let your mom have it. You only need a certified copy of it. I've never needed the original. I think it's kind of nice that she wants to keep it.

DH had a certified copy as well. That counts as an original.

If your parents want one for sentimental reason, tell them to make a copy!

^^Exactly!
I lost my original but I do have a photocopy of it which I like because the one I got from Kings County after I lost the original doesn't have all the same details.

I have my original. I sort of understand why they feel it's sentimental....yet I also think its most important for you to have it.

Re: birth cert. question

This just came up yesterday with my parents..
I just moved out 4 months ago, and I now need my birth cert. to get my marriage license. As of now, my parents still have it only bc I forgot to take it. They're now saying that after I get my marriage license they want my birth certificate back bc of "sentimental value", and that I need to pay to get a certified copy.
So my question is, do you have your original certificate? A certified copy? Did your parents keep the original? Are my parents just odd?
My parents lost my birth certificate. They had no idea where it went. So I had to get a new print out when I got married and I kept it. I think it is weird that your parents want to keep it for sentimental value. Why not just let you keep it? You should have it. But I guess, since you can get a new copy, to avoid drama just let them keep it and get your own.

Re: birth cert. question
This is NOT a sentimental piece of paper.
This is a LEGAL document. The original birth certificate is YOURS, not your parents.

I have my original as does DH. It was never an issue with my parents.
Same here. You may need the original for things and trying to use a certified copy in place of that or getting a replacement is a PITA - Just make them a photocopy, a nice one, and frame it or something!

birth cert. question
if it means a lot to your mom, just let her keep it. I prefer to use the certified copy for lyrical business anyway.
EDIT: WTF autocorrect??
lyrical = offical
