Birthing Ball?!?!
Has anyone used one for previous pregnancies or plan to use one for this one? I'm intrigued by the idea and feel like it would be more comfortable to labor sitting/leaning on the ball especially because I have hip problems that have started to act up within these last few weeks. I know the hospital doesn't provide one, so you'd have to bring your own but they are pretty cheap at Dicks/Modells/Sporting Authority. Any thoughts?

if not I'm sure its a good way to distract from the pain

Yeah, I'm planning on having an epi and know that from the point it gets administered onwards, I won't be able to use the ball but I was thinking of it more for early laboring at home and in the hospital so that I'm not in the bed the entire time, knowing that will be my only option after the epi!

Birthing Ball?!?!
I didn't use it during labor but I have one in the house that came in handy when my sciatica was acting up and I couldn't sleep.
Reminds me that I need to find it before I hit the 3rd tri!

Not sure where you are giving birth but i know NS Manhasset doesnt let you walk around/ do anything when admitted. I didnt want to be in bed the whole time but the nurse kept insisting they needed me hooked up to the fetal monitor. This annoyed the heck out of me!

This is true! Unless you have a doula most of the hospitals (Winthrop, NSUH and LIJ for sure) won't let you use a ball once you're admitted. I guess you can use it at home.

Don't live in NY , but just curious : you can't move around even if your provider approves it and it is in your birth plan ? What about women who desire a natural , unmedicated childbirth ?

I would think that if you have a doctor/midwife/doula who is ok with that, they will allow you to.

Birthing Ball?!?!
i got a yoga ball for birthing bc it was cheaper
i ended up not being able to move to it due to pain
then i got an epi and couldnt use it anyway :(

Unfortunately for me i didnt luck out with understanding nurses for my first... We were following the Bradley Method which encourages all types of natural methods to labor. Maybe the staff was having a bad day and didnt feel like allowing me to do my thing. My doctor was super supportive as well but i didnt see him until the very end. After all the planning in the world, i ended up in c-section after 19 hours. I was disappointed at first but ive moved on. I think having a very firm doula would be helpful in getting a mother to labor how she wants though.

This. I didn't bring mine to the hospital, but sat on it my entire last month and to labor at home. Best $11 at Target I've ever spent.

At my hospital I was allowed to move around as much as I wanted. Upon being admitted, they checked me and the baby. I then did laps around labor and delivery to move things along. My hospital provided birthing balls and birthing tubs if you wanted them.

I was the "don't tell me anything about giving birth till I get there" mom to be, so I hadn't researched a heck of a lot leading up to being admitted. I was induced, so they needed me laying down for the first two hours with the cervadil, but after that I was hooked up to an IV, the fetal monitor and the blood pressure monitor due to an allergic reaction so I only got up to use the bathroom every once in awhile. Once active labor kicked in, I had such awful back pain, the only place I could semi-tolerate was laying on my left side anyway.

I have a yoga ball that I plan on bringing with me. When I did the hospital tour at LIJ, they said that if I wanted one, to bring my own. Maybe they've gotten more progressive. I hope so because if they make me stay in bed the whole time I'm going to be pissed.

I purchased one of the balls at TJ Maxx. It was less than $10. I used it in both of my labors and it helped tremendously. I brought it to the hospital both times (St. Charles) and used it with no problem. I am planning a homebirth with this one and know that the ball is an absolute necessity.
