Re: "Black Friday" keeps getting earlier & earlier
I have yet to go shopping on Thanksgiving.. or even at midnight. It just feels wrong and I feel bad for the employees.. plus after all the eating and wine who can shop??
However, my stupid butt will be in line at 5 am.

And this, dear friends, is why I will patronize PC Richards over any other store- even if their prices were slightly higher. (this is an ad they have been running on Thanksgiving each year)

Re: "Black Friday" keeps getting earlier & earlier
It bothers me that THANKSGIVING, a day to take pause and be THANKFUL, is turning into a day about deals. Yes some people do it to save, I get it, some do it with family, I get it....but it's a day to be THANKFUL for what you ALREADY have! Sorry for the caps, it just makes me so mad! What I find just as ridiculous is that there are 2 small, and I mean small stands in Meijer for Thanksgiving stuff, but isle upon isle of Christmas stuff that was out in September. I'm #1 for holiday spirit....I am but this is just to much. So many hoildays are about gifts the giving/receiving of things and the 1 day that is about family is being over run with commercialism. I makes me glad we're going back to basics this year and celebrating each holiday simply and remembering what the actual meaning is. I am so over stores telling me/trying to tell me that without XYZ I am a scrooge or not "cool" enough.

Yep - exactly this. I am so sick of the commericalism of Christmas. I am thinking of banning all gifts. I don't want cr@p I wont' even remember by next Christmas. And I certainly don't want to have to get all stressed out over buying YOU cr@p you won't even remember by next year!

I agree but I am one of those who can't really afford to spend alot but feel like we will be looked down upon if we don't. is it sad? yes. but we would never go empty handed knowing other people had gifts for our child or us. I do think it's awful that walmart is now opening at 8. I personally wouldn't choose to go out shopping ON thanksgiving although I went that one time and got some good deals with my mom...in MY HOUSE we don't and won't do that...but when in rome...kwim? I don't think they should open ON thanksgiving day...but I have no problem with the day after...this is the time that companies get back in the black and it does also contribute to our economy.

Re: "Black Friday" keeps getting earlier & earlier
I work in retail so I can chime in here.
I'm a full time manager at one of the stores(Tanger) and I started there 11 years ago when I was college. Back then we opened at 7 am, then it was 6, then 5, then earlier and earlier. Now we open at 10pm thanksgiving night. I don't think that part is the worst of it, but being open all night long is daunting. People aren't really shopping from 2 am to 5 am. Whoever the manager is has to work 9pm to 6 am, most likely after a day with family and having no sleep. The part time employees love it because they get double pay from 9-12, and time and a half from 12-6, but the manager doesn't get anything extra. Now I am lucky that I have not had to do this yet ever, but I have walked in in the morning looking at my other manager thinking how the he'll are you driving home?
Also, the deals are not that great, at least from what I can tell you. I'm no sure about the best buys, wal-marts etc, but my store runs a big all-store promotion, but the stuff you buy on BF is guaranteed to be marked down by Christmas with an additional percentage off the clearance price. And they do mark things up. For instance I bought a fleece top for a Christmas gift yesterday at timberland. It was marked $65, on sale for 39.99 and I used a 20% off coupon. Now who in their right mind would ever pay $65 for this lightweight fleece zip up is beyond me. Even if they run a 50% off sale, it's a dollar cheaper than what I paid with a regular sale and a coupon.. It's all marketing ploy. People line up like a bunch of imbeciles at the mall office for a free coupon book or a cheap toy giveaway. This is not a rant to complain about my job or anything like that, but an observation about how crazy things have gotten over the years. We only have 1 day a year when the store is closed and that's Christmas. We are even open on Easter.
Last year the traffic was so insane I had to park at the hotel across the street and walk to work. This year I'm going to be 38 weeks pregnant and I'm a little concerned about getting to work on time without a problem...

Re: "Black Friday" keeps getting earlier & earlier
I also work retail and I have to agree with some of the previous statements. Every year it keeps getting earlier. My store opens at midnight but most of the management has to work the overnight. So I will be at work at 11pm on Thanksgiving night. I am not off until 9:30 Friday morning. It is a very long night. You miss out on enjoying the holiday because all you are thinking about it going in to work later that night. It is very hard on everyone working. The customers for the most part are just out to have a good time. For most of them it has become a tradition. My store has no great deals on Black Friday. Actually many of the items are cheaper this week then they will be then. I am hoping this is my last Christmas in retail. I just don't enjoy it at all anymore.

I feel bad for the store employees.....
I think if they want to open early- make it like 11 pm..... that gives people enough time to finish dinner and not have to rush to get to work.

Re: "Black Friday" keeps getting earlier & earlier
I shop on black friday because it's become a traditions however, I will never EVER shop on Thanksgiving day. I love the holiday season and I think it is slowly but surely getting ruined because people are greedy. I also remember when stores used to close by 2-3pm on Sundays and now every store is open until 9pm. It makes me sad to think my kids will never know what it was like to have days where family can just relax and not worry about who is working when

This! I refuse to go shopping on Black Friday because I don't think it is right they open these stores earlier and earlier and people can't be with their families, so I will not support it and definitely not on Thanksgiving night! I do my best to not even go to CVS on Black Friday.

Re: "Black Friday" keeps getting earlier & earlier
I HATE IT!! There is NO need for 8pm on Thanksgiving to have sales. I used to work for Wal-mart and hated being there at 2am for 4am opening. Now they are just continually open to make money.
I honestly wish that stores had short hours on Sundays still.
I can go on and on how I think the family environment is going to shit because of these things (and more ) but I am not going to.
I just know that I am going to try and keep MY family together on Thanksgiving. Not worrying about getting a deal on a laptop or camera.

My kids are in bed well before most of the stores open, and we finish eating around 5pm, so I'll be out and about I'm sure. I do wish they would just go back to the 5am sales though, as I feel bad for the employees that have to work overnight.

I love shopping Black Friday. It's been a tradition for me, my aunt and my sister for yearssss. We have a routine and can't change it lol.
Although I love the sales, I do not like that the employees are away from their family. There was no reason to change the time from 12am to 10pm, now some as early as 8pm. It's not Black FRIDAY anymore, it's starting on Thursday.

You couldn't pay me in baskets of kittens to go shopping on black friday (or most other days, etiher). I feel bad for ppl who have to work and want to be home with their families. I don't feel bad for people who WANT to work for the extra buck. My DH will put in for OT on Thanksgiving and that's fine with me. 12 hours of holiday pay is a huge help. To each, his own.

It's definitely not for me. DH goes to PC Richards by our house to get whatever electronics we want for the year. It's off the beaten path and it's pretty much empty around 6am on Friday. We wouldnt ever go shopping the night before though. I wouldnt support it, not our style.

While we are BF traditioners in my family...I do agree with this. Honestly, some of the fun (for me anyway) is lost when they open Thanksgiving night. I LOVED the 3am line up and while being at work at 3am sucks, Im sure, I do feel for the employees who now how to leave thanksgiving day to get to work.

Re: "Black Friday" keeps getting earlier & earlier
I think its ridiculous and something should really be done about the fact that all the people who work at the stores are being rubbed of their time with their family when they should be sitting at the dinner table and giving thanks!
Unbeleavable!!! I think Thanksgiving is one of the most meaningful holidays we have! My whole family— all of us immigrants who came here 20 years ago and started from nothing— come together at the table each year and give thanks to this country for taking us in and letting us flourish! it saddens me deeply that people are being rubbed of that experience so a few hundred lunatics can have more time to stomp on each other in hopes of saving a few bucks on a new tv.

YES!!! I have worked in retail for years (and at high end stores) and understand the importance of Black Friday. During those times I always said I would stay Thanksgiving Eve to get stuff ready for BF. I'm disgusted that stores are open on Thanksgiving. There is no need!!

To everyone that says they would never go out on Thanksgiving for shopping, have you ever gotten bagels on Thanksgiving morning. Did you go to the bakery to get a pumpkin pie? Did you run out to a supermarket that was open or walgreens? While you are slamming all of these other places for having their employees work on a holiday, don't forget those stores that you may visit. I know, no one on here ever does anything as horrific as by a dozen bagels for their family on Thanksgiving morning, but I am sure there are some people out there that do it. FTR...I have no problem with any store being open on Thanksgiving, or any other day for that matter.

I respectfully disagree. Thanksgiving morning isn't like say, Christmas morning where the bulk of family time is in the morning. Yu cant do any of the things you mentioned on Christmas morning for that very reason. When I was younger I worked at King Kullen and they were open until 2pm and I always worked, but it never impeded on my family time.
That was the whole point of my OP. Retailers are taking away the value and tradition of family. They just don't give a shit about their employees anymore. Yes, I get that as long as people will go out and shop retailers will accommodate them. But, If they just remained closed until midnight people wouldn't shop. Period. It's just not fair to people who would rather spend time with family but are scheduled to go in.
One entire day, a holiday no less, to spend with your family shouldn't be a luxury.

Yes I think stores being open the morning of for a short period of time is acceptable. Im sure that sounds hypocritical. I personally feel this way because no one eats Thanksgiving dinner in the morning. Thanksgiving festivities are centered around afternoon/evening. If I worked in retail I would be so pisssed if I have to get up from the dinner table on Thanksgiving & leave my family who will still be there enjoying one another to go to prep a store for an 8pm opening.
