Sorry but in this economy if shoppers want to shop on Thanksgiving night, the stores should be open.
As far as people working retail, it goes with the territory. If working Thanksgiving evening didn't go with the territory a few years ago, well times have changed and it goes with the territory now.
I am all for doing whatever it takes to stimulate spending/shopping in this economy. Yes it may suck to work thanksgiving, but that is the reality we face now.
And I can speak from experience as I have a job (not retail) that can require me to work on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas.
Two years ago I was stuck working Christmas Eve and missed time with my family. Another time I had to work on Christmas. Sucks, but it goes with the terroritory for my job and I accept that as long as I continue to work in the field that I am in.
And I wouldn't be so quick to assume that EVERY employee hates working Thanksgiving night. I am sure plenty of company (not all) but plenty pay some type of overtime and in these tough times many people may welcome this type of work.
Just my two cents. We have this conversation every year on here.
I completely agree with this. If there wasn't a demand for the stores to be open, they wouldn't.
It is what it is and if you don't want to go out, don't.

Posted by MC09 And honestly, I think this push to get people to leave their families on a day that's dedicated to giving thanks for what we already have... and to get them to stampede like a herd of wild cattle into the local wal-mart to buy more crap they don't need and probably can't afford anyway is a big indication of what's wrong with this country and the scary direction we're headed in. This would be unheard of in most other countries where family time is still considered sacred (and not just for a few select days throughout the year, but on a weekly occurrence... and now we can't even have those few select days of the year anymore). But, hey, I guess that's what makes this the greatest country on the face of the earth, am I right?
People make their own decisions.
You can't blame retailers for people ditching "family time".
Get what what you are saying, but I do blame the stores. If you are on limited funds and have family to buy for why wouldn't you want to get that awesome deal? They pick the items they do so that people like me, who are not doing great $$$, HAVE to get out to buy that gift so we can afford it. That's the thing. That is what bothers me.
But are the deals really that good? Like the difference between affording a certain gift or not? Because from what I see from the ads, I don't see any great, life changing deals. I think I got better deals in Kohl's yesterday on my lunch break... with their coupons/kohl's cash etc...
I think there are deals on electronics and toys and department stores have good deals on housewares etc. But everything is limited quantities.
The clothing stores- not much of a deal I got the Tommy Hilfiger promo at tanger and it was 40% off entire store, then a coupon for 20% off if you shop before 8am, but you had to spend over $250
I went shopping there a few weeks ago and they were running different promos and I was able to get stuff on sale for 50% off, and then I had a 30% off friends and family coupon, it was a better deal
This is just an example...

I agree.
It's a vicious cycle.
The stores open earlier and earlier so people go. It's only a relatively new phenomena of shopping at ridiculous hours (ie. 12am-6am) and the stores started it.
People are just stupid enough to go for it. If everyone stayed home the stores wouldn't open but I think they threw it out there to see what would stick and it worked.

You are not alone
And we can discuss this every year - no matter how many times it comes up, i will say that I think it's horrible.
I don't see how opening at 9 pm on Thanksgiving night is going to 'make' a retailer's holiday sales.

They are opening earlier because sales are down overall... the economy is way worse than it was 10 years ago... and for a lot of companies they have shareholders to appease. The holiday is called BLACK friday for a reason.
I can picture two groups that you will likely find shopping on Thanksgiving night. Singles who have minimal family and just want to get out and avoid family drama. And teens 15-21 range who don't think it's "cool" to hang out with family all night and would rather meet up with friends after required dinner/family time.

Re: "Black Friday" keeps getting earlier & earlier
I love Black Friday and go shopping every year. I can't wait to see the ads each year and get all sorts of good deals.
I worked in a detention center for kids and worked on Thanksgiving for many years. Many people work on Thanksgiving. It comes with the territory for certain types of jobs.

The fact that you referred to black Friday as a holiday says it all.
It's a DAY. NOT a HOLIDAY.
It's a regular shopping day...RETAILERS would like you to believe it's something more special. That you're gonna get some deal. In most cases, you're not.
Also, as someone who HAS WORKED on Thanksgiving night in retail, I can tell you from experience, you're wrong about your suspected demographic of shoppers.
I saw a TON of adults, groups of women and men (couples and singles) shopping at the Tanger Outlet Mall in Riverhead. I didn't see as many teenagers, I'm glad. I wouldn't want to know kids were out (regardless if they're just shopping) at midnight or 3 or 4 in the morning.
