To everyone that says they would never go out on Thanksgiving for shopping, have you ever gotten bagels on Thanksgiving morning. Did you go to the bakery to get a pumpkin pie? Did you run out to a supermarket that was open or walgreens? While you are slamming all of these other places for having their employees work on a holiday, don't forget those stores that you may visit. I know, no one on here ever does anything as horrific as by a dozen bagels for their family on Thanksgiving morning, but I am sure there are some people out there that do it. FTR...I have no problem with any store being open on Thanksgiving, or any other day for that matter.
I respectfully disagree. Thanksgiving morning isn't like say, Christmas morning where the bulk of family time is in the morning. Yu cant do any of the things you mentioned on Christmas morning for that very reason. When I was younger I worked at King Kullen and they were open until 2pm and I always worked, but it never impeded on my family time.
That was the whole point of my OP. Retailers are taking away the value and tradition of family. They just don't give a shit about their employees anymore. Yes, I get that as long as people will go out and shop retailers will accommodate them. But, If they just remained closed until midnight people wouldn't shop. Period. It's just not fair to people who would rather spend time with family but are scheduled to go in.
One entire day, a holiday no less, to spend with your family shouldn't be a luxury.
I don't follow what you are saying. Are you ok with those places being open Thanksgiving morning?
BTW...I can go to walgreens on Christmas and pick up bagels for my family Christmas morning as well.
Yes I think stores being open the morning of for a short period of time is acceptable. Im sure that sounds hypocritical. I personally feel this way because no one eats Thanksgiving dinner in the morning. Thanksgiving festivities are centered around afternoon/evening. If I worked in retail I would be so pisssed if I have to get up from the dinner table on Thanksgiving & leave my family who will still be there enjoying one another to go to prep a store for an 8pm opening.
Well, those stores that are open for a "short period of time" usually require many more hours of work than you realize. This means that when Thanksgiving dinner is happening, they are extremely tired from the long early hours they put in. So, it doesn't sound hypocritical, it IS hypocritical.
Again, I am more playing devils advocate here since I have no problem with any store being open.

I get what you're saying, but I think this is apples and oranges honestly. Bakeries and supermarkets target last minute shoppers for the holidays and always have. They usually are open for a few hours during the morning/early afternoon and close early as well. Employees can still be home in time to enjoy the holiday with their families. At least that's how it was when I was younger. I don't know if it has changed. They're targeting the people that forgot to pick up that last can of cranberry jelly or what have you.. or that want to pick up dessert so they don't show up empty-handed. These things are directly related to the holiday. They're not trying to get people to leave dinner early so they can score a deal (or so they want us to believe) on a blu-ray player or big screen tv... which have no connection to the holiday (well not until recently)...
And honestly, I think this push to get people to leave their families on a day that's dedicated to giving thanks for what we already have... and to get them to stampede like a herd of wild cattle into the local wal-mart to buy more crap they don't need and probably can't afford anyway is a big indication of what's wrong with this country and the scary direction we're headed in. This would be unheard of in most other countries where family time is still considered sacred (and not just for a few select days throughout the year, but on a weekly occurrence... and now we can't even have those few select days of the year anymore). But, hey, I guess that's what makes this the greatest country on the face of the earth, am I right?

Just because they have the deals and the stores are open doesn't mean you have to actually GO SHOPPING and buy into it!
This! I refuse to go shopping on Black Friday because I don't think it is right they open these stores earlier and earlier and people can't be with their families, so I will not support it and definitely not on Thanksgiving night! I do my best to not even go to CVS on Black Friday.
I refuse to leave my house at ALL that day- mainly because of the traffic and crowds- the thought alone makes me itch. No deal on a crappy sweater at old navy- even if it was FREE- would be enough to make me want to do that. NOTHING. Even if they gave me the sweater and a $20 gift card for coming out. No thanks. My sanity is more valuable than saving a few bucks. Time is money and in my book SANITY is money!

Re: "Black Friday" keeps getting earlier & earlier
Sorry but in this economy if shoppers want to shop on Thanksgiving night, the stores should be open.
As far as people working retail, it goes with the territory. If working Thanksgiving evening didn't go with the territory a few years ago, well times have changed and it goes with the territory now.
I am all for doing whatever it takes to stimulate spending/shopping in this economy. Yes it may suck to work thanksgiving, but that is the reality we face now.
And I can speak from experience as I have a job (not retail) that can require me to work on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas.
Two years ago I was stuck working Christmas Eve and missed time with my family. Another time I had to work on Christmas. Sucks, but it goes with the terroritory for my job and I accept that as long as I continue to work in the field that I am in.
And I wouldn't be so quick to assume that EVERY employee hates working Thanksgiving night. I am sure plenty of company (not all) but plenty pay some type of overtime and in these tough times many people may welcome this type of work.
Just my two cents. We have this conversation every year on here.

Re: "Black Friday" keeps getting earlier & earlier
Why oh why does anyone care that much what the stores do???? So what, they are open on a holiday. If the demand wasn't there they wouldn't do it. And why does anyone care if somebody wants to shop on Thanksgiving night? There are people who are done with their festivities early on Thanksgiving, or don't care about the holiday, or are alone, or who knows what else. I don't understand this SAME debate every year. Who cares. The country is NOT going down the tubes and just because you feel like going out at midnight to shop doesn't mean you don't value family or the holiday.
And I worked in retail back in the day and you take the job KNOWING that holidays, nights, and weekends are fair game in that industry. I'm not saying it does't stink but that's the nature of retail. If someone hates that fact, find a new job. EVERY job has their pros and cons, this is a con of retail.
Good lord, three plus threads on being angry over stores opening up on Thanksgiving and getting heated over it is so ridiculous to me. Everyone needs to worry about themselves and who gives a cr@p what anyone does on their holiday. I don't shop on Thanksgiving night but I certainly do NOT care one bit if someone does. Such a silly "discussion" every year.

I was having a conversation with my mom today, and made a comment in passing that really got me thinking. She casually said "I predict Thanksgiving will be gone in a couple of years. It's just going to be another day to shop, like July 4th"
I have to say, this cracked me up. July 4th is another day to shop? Outside of getting food for barbecues, I've never shopped on July 4th.

Many people who have been working in retail for years are now forced to work thanksgiving night where it wasnt done before. So, no, they didnt take a job in retail knowing full well they'd have to work on this holiday.

Exactly- when I was in retail about 10 years ago it was unheard of to be open on Thanksgiving itself. Black Friday at a ridiculous hour, yes. But not Thanksgiving night.

Oh, I'm completely with you that the stores are just supplying a demand. The shoppers make the decision to be out and about so why not open and make money... but, I still believe it's part of a cycle. If the stores weren't open, there'd be no place to shop just like if there weren't shoppers there'd be no reason to open. Such is life.

I have walked in in the morning looking at my other manager thinking how the he'll are you driving home?
I worked at Tanger in Riverhead and worked Black Friday - Midnight to 8am, I drove home and made it there in one piece by the GRACE OF GOD. I was COMPLETELY exhausted. I KNOW I was a hazard on the road but I just wanted to get home so I could go to sleep.
It's terrible.
Oh and a way to beat the parking sitch? I brought my car over on Thanksgiving morning and parked by the store, then had my sister drop me off later that night otherwise you'll never get a spot.

Have you ever worked retail on Thanksgiving/Black Friday at midnight or 10pm?

Get what what you are saying, but I do blame the stores. If you are on limited funds and have family to buy for why wouldn't you want to get that awesome deal? They pick the items they do so that people like me, who are not doing great $$$, HAVE to get out to buy that gift so we can afford it. That's the thing. That is what bothers me.
As for what another pp posted...I don't think it's the same as other stores being open for everyday needs. That is normal. These stores opening earlier adn earlier is not. I remember when the outlets by us opend for pajama night at midnight. People we just stunned! Now they open at 8pm. I'm not against the shopping and deal hunting, what I am against is the way this holiday is turning into more about getting a good deal then about THANKSGIVING. It's almost like lets have a beig nice meal BEFORE we go shopping. KWIM?

Yeah, we did that one year, this year I'm gonna see if my dad can drop me off there since DH will be working there also I can ride home with him.
My bro's girlfriend is a manager at TARGET and she is working 8pm Thanksgiving night until noon on Friday, 16 hour shift!!

Posted by MC09 And honestly, I think this push to get people to leave their families on a day that's dedicated to giving thanks for what we already have... and to get them to stampede like a herd of wild cattle into the local wal-mart to buy more crap they don't need and probably can't afford anyway is a big indication of what's wrong with this country and the scary direction we're headed in. This would be unheard of in most other countries where family time is still considered sacred (and not just for a few select days throughout the year, but on a weekly occurrence... and now we can't even have those few select days of the year anymore). But, hey, I guess that's what makes this the greatest country on the face of the earth, am I right?
People make their own decisions.
You can't blame retailers for people ditching "family time".
But are the deals really that good? Like the difference between affording a certain gift or not? Because from what I see from the ads, I don't see any great, life changing deals. I think I got better deals in Kohl's yesterday on my lunch break... with their coupons/kohl's cash etc...
