breast pump question...

what are your thoughts on renting from your hospital. I've had people tell me i should rent it and not spend the $, others were like "ewww....renting one"

i kind of feel like im not sure how I will do with nursing so why spend $250 or more on a pump kit, etc if it may not work out.

i dont know..im confused.

and do people register for breast pumps??

Re: breast pump question...

I have seen a lot of people register for breast pumps.

Since I don't know how BF will work out for me, I was planning on maybe adding a pump onto my registry after my shower. That way, if I decide I need it later on, I can get the completion discount on it at least.

Re: breast pump question...

I will be renting mine but from BRU. I don't plan on renting past 12 weeks since I will be back at work & honestly I don't know if it will work out in the end. I don't want to receive a pump as a gift just in case it doesn't work out. I think it is all personal preference

Re: breast pump question...

Rentals are good if you have nursing issues, because they are stronger than the ones you can buy on the market. They are also a good idea for people who know they will only nurse with one child, so it doesn't make financial sense to actually purchase a pump.

The only advice I can give you is to WAIT. You have no idea at this point whether the nursing will work out or not, and if it doesn't you don't want to waste any money on renting or buiying a pump.

See how it goes in the hospital - if it's working out, then make your decision from there. My daughter latched on like a champ at the hospital, suprisingly, so about 2 weeks after we got home, I decided to just buy a pump because I knew we would have more children, and it would pay off down the road.

Re: breast pump question...

renting is completely fine and sterile. you have to buy an accessory kit regardless (25 bucks) so it's all new tubing and other goodies. i was going to rent and then buy if it worked out, however i saw the prices of renting (80 a month at bru which is ridiculous) and i looked on ebay and cragislist, found a woman who tried pumping but her milk supply just wasn't good enough so she stopped it (was used maybe 8-10 times) it's 2 years old and i got it for 75 bucks (medela pump in style shoulder bag!) with a free manual pump too. everything was super clean, works and it was the best decision! so you could always go that route, look on craigslist or ebay. they have some for real cheap

Re: breast pump question...

i see absolutely no problem at all with renting one. they'll be cleaned and sterilized. i had registered for one, not expecting someone to buy it because they are so expensive, but because the store gives you 10% off whatever wasn't bought off your registry and i thought we could save some money on it.

turns out a friend of mine is done BFing her baby and is lending me hers. that way, if it doesn't work out i'm not out $300, but if it does great... i didn't spend any money on a pump.

Re: breast pump question...

see how it goes at the hospital.

BBB puts out a 20% coupon that includes medela so it wasnt as bad for me $280 became $225

i was going to take my sisters but read online how sometimes the milk backs up into the machine since its not a closed system like the hospital ones, and i didnt feel like opening it up to attempt to clean it so i got a new one.

I plan on buying since it is much cheaper than renting.I will wait to see if all works out and then I will use a BB baby coupon to purchase one.

Re: breast pump question...

I purchased the Medela PISA and frankly feel like I got my money's worth out of it. I pumped while at work 2 - 3 times a day for 7 months. I think I used the pump about 300 times and after the gift cards and coupons spent about 300 on it with all of the accessories and bottles so it really paid off for me. I will get new tubing and bottles for DD but I feel like it has been paid for many times over.
