How often are you pumping?
i am only pumping about once a day. Usually at night so DH can give her the little bit I do pump to DD and then some formula so I can sleep a little bit. but i am not sure if i should be pumping more?? everyone says that pumping is not indicative of how much milk the baby gets anyway. also, every single time i pump i only get a 1/2 an ounce from both breasts combined. there has been no improvement in the pumping area and honestly, i need to be able to pump a lot more than that because i will be going back to work and would like to have some milk stored.
also, how does one know when they're done. i feel like she's never done. she can nurse for 30+ minutes plus if I let her and the minute i take her off she cries and then sucks down a bottle.
As far as the pumping, I am asking how often you pump because I think that if you pump often, as well as feed often, your supply should increase. Why don't you try pumping more than once a day? I know its a hassle, but worth it when more milk comes in.
As far as how to know when the baby is done, I just let my baby nurse until she either falls asleep, or just falls off and seems satisified. Sometimes she may nurse all day. Seriously. I mean 30+ minutes is nothing compared to some days that I have gone through with DD. BF can be a full-time job. I just follow my daughter's lead.
I am thinking now, it may be possible that your daughter does need more milk, but if you are taking her off too soon, your body may think she is done when she is not. Instead of taking her off the breast, just let her keep going. She may be on all day, but after awhile, your body should get the message that your DD needs more milk. See if that helps. Just let her keep going. Or, if you feel she is really not getting enough, feed for a long time, give her a bottle, then pump. It sounds like you need to tell your body you need more milk.

It's AMAZING how much psychology and mindset plays into nursing and milk supply!
YOU ARE DOING AWESOME!!! Keep it up!!!
I agree with this. I can't believe the mind/body connection relating to milk supply. And yes, you are doing awesome! I think its great how you are so committed.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
Can anyone provide advice on how to start supplementing with formula?
- How many oz? - When during the day-- once, how often, etc.? - Any suggestions on which formula? - Do you give alone, or mix with BM?

Supplement for the feeding you need to supplement and how often you need to. If you want to cut that night feeding/ pump then supplement then. There is no right or wrong way or specific amount you need to supplement. Its about what works for YOU
I was told to NEVER mix BM and formula. The enzymes naturally found in BM can react with the formula and upset their belly.

Great to hear that the sucking and swallowing are increasing and great to hear you are going to go at it harder! Sounds like you are going in the right direction and it will be coming together.
Are you going back to the support group this week?

I probably won't this week as DH and I have early dinner reservations in the city (our first chance to have a date since baby!) and we have to drop the baby off at my Mom's beforehand. I will definitely be going next week though.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
I'm wondering if you ladies could help me with my registry. I am extremely confused about registering for items that I would need when I pump and the bottles to use. I'm registering for a pump, nipple pads, cream, and the bags. Is there anything else I would need for the breastfeeding?
I plan on BF straight (if all goes well) for 3/4 weeks and then introduce the bottle to DC as I will be going back to work. I plan to freeze milk in the bags.
What bottles can I use to feed DC breastmilk as I introduce her to the bottle? Can I pump directly into a bottle and if so which ones are compatible with the Medela pump? Can I pump into a bag and transfer the milk to a bottle?
TIA.

Yes you can pump directly into bottles if you want. Medala makes storage bottles that attach to the pump, I know dr. browns attach as well, I'm not sure which others. As far as introducing her to bottles you will just have to try them out and see which she likes. I've tried a bunch with dd. She seems to like dr. browns and the first years breast flow bottles best. Not sure if you want to add these to a registry but the only other things I'd say you might need are nursing bras/sleeping bras/ nursing tanks and a maybe a nursing cover up. oh and maybe a drying rack for when you clean the bottles/pump equip. etc.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
I need some advice. My DS is 3 months old, and ~15 lbs. I nurse him 2-3 x's in the am, give 5 4oz bottles (4 formula, 1 breastmilk - he usually has 4 bottles there) to the daycare, and then nurse usualy once more at home, then my DH gives him a bottle around 8ish. Overnight, I nurse about 3 times. So he is eating 10-12 times a day. A doctor last week (not his ped.) said that was probably too much and to increase the amounts and he will eat less. The problem is that I am pumping while at work, and only making enough for the next days 1day care bottle - like 4 oz. How much should I increase him formula bottles to - 5 or 6 oz? And at this point, can I increase my milk somehow? I do try to drink alot of water.
A problem is that I can't pump at home - I have a 2 year old so it is impossible with him around, and I would do it overnight but I am nursing then. I do pump twice a day at work, for ~10-20 min each time, but only get ~ 2 oz a time.
I was able to nurse/supplement my first DS for 6 1/2 months, but had more miilk and then he kind of weened himself. With this baby, he nurses for like 5 min max on one side at a time, and doesn't really seem hungry after, but can easily take a 4 oz bottle and is sometimes still hungry.
Sorry to ramble, just pumped a little over 2 oz total and haven't nursed since 7 am... Does anyone have any advice on a better feeding schedule or how to increase my milk?

It sounds like he's eating a lot to me, but my DS never nursed that frequently except perhaps during a growth spurt. Since he has been in daycare, DS gets 3 bottles there (at 3.5 months, he got 4-4.5 oz bottles and by 5.5-6 months, I had increased the bottles to 6 oz). He eats every 3-4 hours.
I think part of the problem is that he's getting 5 bottles while you're away from him, but you're only pumping twice during that time. Try pumping more often since BFing is all about supply and demand. The more you pump/nurse, the more you should produce.
Make sure you drink plenty of water. You can also eat oatmeal to help increase your supply. There's Mother's Milk Tea and More Milk Plus, which a lot of people recommend. Make sure you're consuming enough calories. Good luck!

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
okay ladies, so when do I call it a day?
IF you see my previous posts, i have been struggling with the BFing (just my supply- she latches on like a champ and will suck for 15-20 minutes a side). My supply has not increased. Only ONCE in the last 2 weeks did she actually seem satisfied after a feeding (meaning she went 2 hours without wanting to be fed again, usually she cries within 15 minutes (usually less than 5 minutes) for more food). I have seen no changes in my supply after going whole hog for several days (nursing every feeding). I still only get one ounce with both breasts COMBINED when I pump, sometimes only 1/2 an ounce. Only ONCE did I get two ounces from a pumping session and that was when I had a crazy day and did not get to nurse her at all.
Since I have posted my initial concerns, I have increased my fluid intake, i am taking a supplement for nursing mothers (given to me from a doctor's office, not over the counter) and been drinking the Mother's Milk. ]
So my question is, is it time to call it a day? I asked the pediatrician today and she said it was doubtful that my supply would increase at this point. I have no problem nursing her to give her the little I can, but every time I nurse her I think, "Maybe, just maybe I won't have to FF after" and it just never happens. I ended up feeling disappointed and tired. Also, in addition to all the time it takes to nurse, then I have to turn around and extend the feeding another 20 minutes with a bottle. Also, I don't get anything when I pump, so my changes of pumping enough so that she can have breast milk when i go back to work in a few months is next to nil...
I think I am done... not necessarily done with nursing her to give her what I can, but done with the idea of her being EBF. Thoughts?

Have you tried a LC??? Anywho.. I don't agree with your ped. It takes 12 weeks for your supply to stabilize. That being said, its not the end of the world if you supplement. You could supplement for a few weeks and if your stress level goes down you could see a rise in your supply as a result....
So what you need to do... Happy mom= happy baby. Only YOU know your breaking point and how much you can take!!

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
When ds was born i had my heart set on ebfing... for about 24 hours.... he gave me such a hard time with nursing and basically he would latch on and fall sleep (guess he needed all his rest so that he could be up all the time now)... so after 24 hours of the nurse yelling at me that he needed to eat i gave in and decided his health was a million times more important.... i ended up supplementing until he was on solids at 5 weeks mainly because he was drinking 65 ounces a day and i couldnt keep up...
as much as i hated supplementing i also hated the thought of him not getting enough nutrition....

no, i have not tried a LC, but I am going to go to a BFing suppor group run by the hospital and the nurse that runs it has the LC certification, so I need to ask her some more questions.
in your experience, what else would a LC tell me to do? i feel like i did the feedings every 2-3 hours, drinking a lot of water ,supplements, etc.? i don't have latching or sucking problems, so what else is there?

My LC would weigh Alexa before and after a feeding to see how much she was getting. SHe would watch a nursing session and see how she was feeding and check the latch frequently. It helped to give us an idea of how much she was taking in each session and pointed out that my latch needed to be better... better latch = more milk intake.
Also, we has to really stimulate her to nurse well or she would get lazy during feedings and not eat enough and while I THOUGHT she was getting a lot per session she really wasn't... it wasn't my supply it was her nursing...
