BTDT moms - question about pumping/bottles?

I am so confused to how many bottles we will need and I should register for.

I will be nursing in the beginning and will pump once I return to work after 3 months. I will be getting the Medela pump in style pump and want to get the Lansinoh storage bottles (as per baby bargains recommendation).

I know I will need nipples but do I still need regular bottles?

I was thinking of registering for the following:

Dr. Browns bottle set

Lansinoh storage bottles (x4)

Lansinoh storage bags

I am also registering for the Dr. Browns sterilizer. Is this too much??? I just feel like it's not enough and yet may be too much Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

That's basically what I registered for, and got a variety of other bottles. I wouldn't buy too much before the baby comes, you're going to want to see what kind of bottle works best for him/her!

Re: BTDT moms - question about pumping/bottles?

First of all-- did I know you were pregnant??!! I don't think so, but then again I can't remember jack shite these days-- Congratulations!!!

I have the Born Free bottles. I registered for the starter set and that was just fine.

I also registered for and got the sterilizer and I never used it. I just use the medela sterilzer microwave bags to sterilize everything except pacifiers which I do on the stove.

eta-- you can also get nipples for the medela bottles which I used from time to time when Sasha was really little. As they get older, they need a faster flow and I don't think you can change nipple size on those, but I could be wrong. They are just nice to have as extras so I recco getting those nipples too.

VERY true!

We used the bottles that came with the pump. Those nipples worked well at first, but then he hated them within a few months. We started buying different nipples, different bottles and went with the flow. If he liked them, we bought more. But then he'd like something else a few months later. Chat Icon

Re: BTDT moms - question about pumping/bottles?

Goodness! Okay, so how about just the Lansinoh storage bottles, the two bottles the medela comes with and two avent nipples to see if the baby likes them?

Is this enough? Also do you ladies know if the Avent sterilizer is good for any bottle? Baby bargains said to use a sterilizer specific for your bottles but how can I do that if I don't know what baby will like?

Re: BTDT moms - question about pumping/bottles?

i never tried the storage bags, i liked the storage bottles cause the medela ones were reusable...

i wouldnt get too many bottles... i had bough dr browns- then started having a leak problem with them and ended up switching to born free- you wont know til your baby is born what works best for them...

Sterilizer is IMO a waste if you keep on top of cleaning your bottles. get a little dish tub, a bottle brush and clean with soap and water.

Re: BTDT moms - question about pumping/bottles?

I wouldn't buy too many bottles because you don't know how picky your baby will be.

I had registered for the Avent bottles and got everything related to it. DS started rejecting their nipples. After going through 5 other bottle brands (including Dr Browns), DS ended up liking the free nipples they give you at the hospital so I've been using the cheap evenflo bottles with the free hospital nipples. Go figure.

I think the sterilizer is a waste. We got one and also the bottle warmer and we used it a total of 3x or so. A dishwasher is sufficient to wash bottles or you can just boil them.

Re: BTDT moms - question about pumping/bottles?

Can you use the Lansinoh storage bottles with the Medela PISA? I have about 10 Medela storage bottles. The hospital gave me a few b/c I had to pump right away and the others I bought at Target or BRU. I like the Medela ones b.c I can pump directly into them and then store the milk in the refrigerator. They also fit in the cooler that comes with the Medela PISA so it's easy to transport the bottles to and from work.

The Lansinoh storage bags are great for freezing milk. I definitely recommend getting them.

I had bought/registered for a couple of different bottles. I ended up getting the small Avent ones and the Playtex Drop-Ins. DS took to the Avent ones so I stayed with them. I also used the nipples for the Medela storage bottles at the beginning.

I never bought or used a sterilizer. I sterilized bottles in a pot of boiling water before I first used them and then just washed them in hot soapy water. You can get the Medela microwave sterilizer bags to sterilize the pump parts.

Too funny!! We do EXACTLY the same thing....Medela bottles, Lansinoh bags, no bottle warmer or sterilizer, our Ped said to just run them through the dishwasher once a week.
The only difference is, we ended up with Playtex Drop In bottles cuz the Avents leaked all over and I got irritated with them.

And BTW - Congrats!!!!! What is your Due date?

Re: BTDT moms - question about pumping/bottles?

If you have limited space i would recommend storage bags over bottles... you can stack alot more bags then bottles... though i used the gerber bags.... as for bottles, i would stick to four and go from them.....

I hate the Avent bottles b/c of the leaking, but DS did well with them so I stuck with them. I found that if I wet the inside of the cap before screwing it on, it usually won't leak.

I did the same thing. I actually use the Medela PISA cooler when we go somewhere and need to plan for feedings. Don't go crazy getting so many bottles! I use the sterilizer bags instead of my sterilizer b/c its so much easier. Medela sells two types of nipples slow flow and medium and both fit on the bottles that come with the pump. Pump comes with four one nipple. We bought this too!
