Can someone tell me
aside from the price of homes and taxes, why it is "so difficult to live on LI". Not looking for drama, seriously, I just want to know what constitutes this feeling for some people.

Re: Can someone tell me
I would say the home prices and taxes are it.
I don't understand what else is so difficult.
You make sacrifices wherever you live. Houses and taxes are cheaper elsewhere, but the jobs often pay less or municipal services are greatly reduced, or it could just be the price of moving away from family.

Re: Can someone tell me
i think its living in areas that have good school districts affordably
or
paying for private school
the sales taxes are high
the traffic is terrible, means sitting in your car more
also - i think people are more in your face with money stuff - flaunting it- more "materialisim" in school, thus kids want more stuff - i know where i gre up labels were more important that values :(
people usually have a pretty big commute into the city or over 30 miles

Re: Can someone tell me
I don't feel that it's hard to live on LI.
BUT, sometimes I do feel it's hard to live on LI when you have a huge family -who celebrates every single event, lots of friends getting married, having babies, throwing parties. Those are the things to me that make living on LI not as easy.
If we just had to carry our mortgage and pay our bills everything would be fine. It's the excessive extras that sometimes hold us back.

Re: Can someone tell me
I agree with Jennifer. Taxes and home prices are killer. I also think some people want a good school district for their children/future children but can't afford to live in a better school district (comes back to housing).
Other than that, I got nothing.

Prices and taxes were it for us...Fortunately Dh was able to xfer his job and pay down here (NC) and I just had to find a job....we have a house we could NEVER afford on LI and the taxes are a joke. I miss my friends and family so much, but its worth the sacrafice.

Good question. I think if everyone was given a house and taxes paid for them - what else is left that is SO much more expensive than anywhere else???

The prices and taxes. However, sometimes I think it all boils down to some are trying to keep us with the Joneses and not making financial decisions based on what they can afford but more on because they are living in LI they have to keep up with everyone.

Re: Can someone tell me
Things are looking up people... the real estate market is quickly shifting in our favor (buyers that is)... so then what's our excuse once buying a house is affordable? I agree with what one poster said.... things are exaggerated down here... weddings, birthdays, showers, etc... go to another state and no one bats an eyelash at giving a crockpot as a wedding gift.... here, a suitable wedding gift is around $300!

It's hard to live on LI if you have 4 weddings to go to next year!!!!
All kidding aside...you really have to work for your home, car, things to buy on LI...it's tough.

Re: Can someone tell me
We are pricey aside of houses and taxes.
One for sure is car insurance, not necessarily our age group but I feel bad for young people who just started driving, etc. House INS/Flood Ins- sometimes mandatory coverage.
GAS too....we seem to be high!

Re: Can someone tell me
I think its taxes & housing costs, compared to income, especially for those that don't work in NYC, or the added commuting costs for those that do.
I've only ever lived in the tri-state area, so I don't really have anything else to compare it to.
I don't think its all that hard, b/c we are actually considering moving to LI eventually, b/c Westchester is too expensive! It's all relative, I guess.

Isn't that enough of a reason?
Owning a home is very important to so many people, and not being able to do so on LI is motivator enough to move somewhere else (where house prices, taxes, gas, insurance (house and car) are ALL less (usually)).

So in my opinion, part of the problem is trying to keep up with the Jones'
I was just going to say this.
I think that's a BIG part of it.
The houses are cheaper elsewhere, but if you look at where my SIL lives upstate, everything is v ery cheap, but people also don't drive BMW's and you hardly ever see anyone on designer clothes. We'd all look like millionaires if we moved up there, where here it's the cultural norm to have this expensive stuff even if we can't afford it.

it's just that housing prices and taxes are very high in comparison with other parts of the country. We also tend to get a lot less house for the $.
I also think it is because there are a good portion of people in this area that do make A LOT of $. So for those of us that are middle class, we feel like we should be able to have the same things! So in my opinion, part of the problem is trying to keep up with the Jones'
Yes, I would agree. It is the price of homes and the taxes.... also, utilities & sales taxes are more expensive here than elsewhere.
In other parts of the country and/or state, living/cost of living is much lower and younger adults have an easier time affording a home, a family, etc. This is why Long Island has such high rates of young people fleeing......
Having said that, Ive lived elsewhere and never want to leave Long Island again! I would rather pay double the taxes and 1.5 times more for a home, than leave :) A personal decision, different for everyone....

Re: Can someone tell me
The only thing that makes living on LI difficult for me is that my sister and niece (ok, BIL too )...don't.
Otherwise, I don't know any other way of life but the one I've got and I think it's pretty good...I like living on LI.

Re: Can someone tell me
I think it's mainly the cost of housing and taxes (both property and sales). Also, most people I know have a commute of some kind and costs associated with that, either driving, parking, gas, or LIRR. LIPA is also pretty high, and cable is astronomical compared with many other areas. Car insurance is also very high.
So why do we stay here? We like Long Island, we have some family in this area, and if we moved to a less expensive part of the country, we would lose on salaries, so we'd kind of be in the same place we are in here.
I agree that many of us get caught up in the idea of keeping up from time to time. DH and I are looking at houses now, and most likely will not be able to afford anything as nice as the homes we grew up in, and those were nothing extravagent. Just your basic middle-class ranches.

Re: Can someone tell me
In addition to housing & taxes, restaurants are more expensive than in other parts of the country. I am sure movie tickets as well as other leisure activities are more expensive. But that is what comes with living near a major metropolitan area. Things are even more expensive if you live in NYC, so it's all relative.

ITA. My dad lives just outside Macon GA and you don't see high school girls with designer clothes and bags, driving brand new cars, etc. that is the norm up here.

Re: Can someone tell me
for me to say its hard to live on li would be difficult b/c i have no other place to compare it to. yes, the prices of houses are high, but its not like i'm in a position to up and move to PA or Jersey to buy a house.
we manage, but we rent right now and that is not always easy. would rent be cheaper off LI? hell yeah, but again, not something i would consider. manily b/c dh works for the LIRR and for him to commute from PA or even Jersey would be more expensive. and he loves what he does so to me its not fair to ask him to move.

Re: Can someone tell me
I believe its mostly homes and taxes....
However since we've been looking into GA- I can say that EVERYTHING is cheaper down there- The price of daycare is tremendously cheaper, as well as gas, groceries and so on (obviously some things arent significantly cheaper)
I know that for some their salary drastically changes- but for what Ive seen- thats really not the case-
I was offered a job- making pretty much what I make here- and they were giving me childcare 100% for free (where as the company I work for now makes me pay anywhere between 75-25% depending on my childs age)
My SIL is a teacher- and although she is making less than teachers at her level here- we are only talking like 5k less/ year....
and to me- well making 5k less to save 100-200k on a house is WELL worth it....
Now my DH works for the gov't so his salary follows him whereever he goes- and honestly it just dosent make sense for us to struggle here- when we can live so much more comfortable- at the same pay there (but I know that not everyone has a job where their salary follows them)
The market is def. going down here- and I love it here- if an opportunity came knocking where we could comfortably live here- and I could continue to work PT or be a SAHM (like I would down south) Id stay in a heartbeat!
