Re: Can we discuss this woman in California who had those octuplets for a minute....
ok... i can't even stand to THINK about this story!! I've known since i was little that i can't have kids... so DH and i are going to adopt. we're going to basically have our lives picked apart by social workers- we'll have to have inspections of our house, they'll analyze our jobs, our health, our finances our relationships, our families, just so we can have ONE kid! we are married for amost 4 years, both have good, stable goverment jobs, own a nice sized home.... and we're going to have to go through all of this, meanwhile this women is selfishly having 14 kids when she doesn't have a house, a job, or a husband to help her... its absolutely ridiculus!!!

I think maybe we should reserve judgement.
Would *I* do it? Not a chance. But.. I'm not this woman and can't begin to guess her motivation.

I can't imagine the motivation for a single woman that lives with her parents to have 14 children by IVF

You know - I can't either. But.. I don't know the whole story. I am thinking that there absolutely MUST be more to this than meets the eye. Maybe there isn't.. maybe she's just an irresponsible person or maybe she's just nuts. Or maybe there is something else that is being kept away from the media. I mean it DOESN'T make sense with the information we've been given, right? What doctor would do that? What woman would want that? I can't figure it out.. so instead of trying I'm just going to hang out and wait until she goes on Oprah or writes her book or whatever it is that she does to clarify her decisions. IF she chooses to clarify them. In the interim.. I'll just pray for her and her family.

My only thing--it seems her motivation is that she just wanted another girl and even her own mother says she's "obsessed with kids and babies".
I truly hope she is ready for what she has put upon herself. I hope she isn't the type that just loves "babies" and when the kids start getting older, she loses interest. Seems like as each kid gets older she feels the need to have yet another baby.

I don't know if anyone posted this article but it sheds a lot of light on this story - the mother sought psychiatric help for this woman b/c of her obsession with children. ALL of her children were conceived by assistance. Her mother told her that when she returns from the hospital, she won't be there - so how is the woman going to afford all of these children - I think every taxpayer has a right to judge when there is potential that these children are going to be a burden on the state. Today on tv, someone was commenting that it is going to cost over 2 million dollars to take care of all of these children - if her father is going to Iraq to support all of these kids, they don't have that kind of money. Sorry, I am judging - i am judging based on what the mother is saying. Liza was totally correct when she says it is not about what she wanted, but what is best for the children. Whoever assisted in her becoming pregnant should really be investigated - her psychological state should have been examined.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
Sorry, that drives me bonkers!!!!!
THANK YOU!!!! THIS HAS BEEN DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!!!

I absolutely agree with this!!! MANY RE clinics have you meet with a counselor before starting IF treatments. My clinic didn't, but after getting my medical records after I was released, I noticed my RE himself wrote up an evaluation on me and my husband based on our initial consultation. You better believe that if he thought I was not emotionally/mentally prepared and stable, he WOULD not have let us continue until we had some sort of counseling.
IVF is not a joke, it's serious stuff. I think I'm more aggrivated about this Dr. who TRANSFERRED 8 embryos into a 33 year old woman than I am about this womans alleged obsession with children.

Re: Can we discuss this woman in California who had those octuplets for a minute....
I will be the first to openly admit I JUDGE her. I think what she did is LUDACRIS and I think very little of her. Base don the facts I have from her mother and the Dr's...what she did was sooo irresponsible! She lives in a tiny little house with her mother and 6 kids and openly wanted to have more chicldren when she clearly could not afford them.......we are talking not ONE more, but 8 more.
And her Dr? The one who allowed this? Should be Fired and SUED. That is not a DR! The health risks to the babies, to the mother, OMG, they are so deep.
And the cost to the public now. NO helath insurance she "might have" will pay for All those babies care., NONE....This I know as FACT. Those babies will require MILLIONS in care that no one can afford.
Ught, the whole thing just infuriates me.
Not to mention all the looneys that will now try to replicate this, and trust me they WILL.

No joke... I dont understand what we are missing or we dont understand... Bottom line, she lives with her mom with 6 children...that is enough for me to think she shouldnt have 8 more. Theres not alot of puzzle pieces to the story...its not like the info is getting better...its only increasingly getting worse.

Ok, I am usually the first to tell people not to judge, but I honestly cannot say that with this. I am judging. I am pointing my finger and judging. There is seriously something wrong with this whole situation!

I very rarely judge ever...but you have 6 kids and you live with your mom. I don't care how she got pregnant, but she was trying to have another baby. You have no husband....you have six kids to take care of and YOU WANT ANOTHER ONE??? Your poor father is taking a job in Iraq so he can make more money...you are selfish. And I don't care how much you love kids...there is something wrong with you.
Her mother told the LA Times...I wish she just would have been a kindergarten teacher...I think that sums is up.
There are serious, serious issues going on here. I hope that Department of Children Services looks into this.

Let me re-phrase my initial response. I understand why people think this woman is insane and are up in arms with the information that has been given so far. And I have no problem with anyone judging her, castigating her, calling her nuts from their own world. But I am hoping there is more to the story. Maybe there isn't - having been in a position where people said stuff about me based on limited information - I just am starting to have a difficult time doing it to anyone else these days. And if she is crazy and irresponsible or stupid or whatnot.. I can only pray for her and her family.
Again - I know that's a minority thought. I don't think anyone is abnormal or 'bad' for making judgements considering what kind of info has been offered - and I hope nobody thinks I am abnormal or bad for not joining the chorus saying she's a psycho.

Honestly...I dont think any of it...is any of our business.
I dont like how quick people are to judge...
Especially without all the facts...
I agree that we are quick to judge, but I also think the 1st response is normally right. I am beyond horrified at this story and this "mother" not only is she endangering her children, and her father, but she is giving infertility and IVF a horrible name. People already are confused with infertility tx;s and this is not helping. I am just beyond disgusted.

I think there has to be something said about her mental state that she thinks children are fun and she should keep having more, no? I mean by no means was this an accident. If she was even to have just one more, that little girl that she longed for having, I would still think it was a VERY bad idea. Her dad is in Iraq supporting her and his grandchildren. I fully understand where you are coming from and in most cases I agree that people should not be judged but the story is in the public eye and its not getting much better. also wanted to add...it said she has a BA and was going for her MS...I would say she was a pretty competent girl to get this far.

Sorry if I missed this info in the links, but isn't IVF very expensive (and not covered by insurance usually)? If the family is filing bankruptcy and living in a 2-bedroom house filled with 9 people (now will be 17) where did she get the money for it?

Re: Can we discuss this woman in California who had those octuplets for a minute....
I honestly think all of these childern should be taken from her and adopted to families that can take care of them - with out having to sell their story to try to make some cash
at least then- the would all have a chance at a normal life
flame me if you want- but I can't see how this is a healthy way to be raised- this woman is mentally ill and seems to stop at nothing to get what she wants - regardless of the outcome

I had read that, so in Mexico it's free or "cheap"? Even if it's half of what it is here, that's still thousands of dollars plus meds, travel, etc.
