Can you be friends with someone from another political party? POLL
DH and I were discussing this the other day....
Would you be able to befriend or continue to be friends with someone who does not share your political views? Esp. one who's voting for the opposite party?

None of these fit me, unfortunately. I have MANY friends that are Republicans (I'm a Dem) and we discuss politics all the time. I have other R friends that refuse to get into politics with me, and that's fine too.

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!! i'd have no friends if this was the case! seriously though, there are certain things that friends just choose to disagree on and that's fine. it doesn't make me not see their good hearts, sense of humor or whatever else they offer.

I actually don't have a friend that is a republican now that I think about it-
but my sister is marrying one in 2 weeks
and my family wont discuss politics in front of him or his family

I think the pol s hould have more options. I absolutely have friends with different political views, just as I do with different religious views, etc. etc.....we are friends and although our views may differ we repsect each others viewpoints when we do discuss politics.

Yes, I could be friends with someone who has different political views. My cousin is a huge republican, so she and I just don't talk politics b/c we know we'd just end up fighting! We can put politics aside for the sake of the relationship.
Most of my friends are pretty liberal though, as I am. I guess we just naturally have more in common.

I can't answer your poll because no choice fits. My answer is yes. We have a lot of friends who have different views than we do. Sometimes we discuss it, sometimes we don't but it doesn't make or break a friendship.

I don't even know what party most of my friends belong to - I don't really get into political conversations with them. It's not really any of my business who people vote for & why.

Of course. I ahve a few people who are close to me, whom I LOVE to death who have very different views. I just deal with it. We have other things in common that tie us to each other just as much.

I can't answer your poll because you don't have an option for me.
I have several friends that are Republicans (I'm a Dem) and with one of those friends and I get into long, extensive conversations about politics. We don't get hostile, we don't get nasty and by the end of our conversations we both know more about the other side's arguments.
I have to say, I think we're both a little more moderate than we used to be before we were friends. We each make sense to each other, kwim?

Absolutely. However, respect my POV and I will respect yours. If my opinions got bashed, I'd be more suspect because I may not agree with what someone says or thinks, but I will never tell them that they are an idiot for thinking it. So, if we agree to disagree, great.

absolutely! my best friend maybebaby and i usually differ on most views, but i respect her and all of my friend's views, even if they're very different than mine.
my friends and i discuss things to a certain extent and disagree on many ideas, but that would NEVER affect our friendship. i think it's a healthy thing to have different views than your friends...you don't always have to agree about everything!

I answered "depends on how extreme"
For instance, i am democrat, on the liberal side. Im for gay marriage, right to choose, gun control, etc. I also dont believe in religion.
So if i cant really imagine being friends w/ a right wing conservative who thinks gays are "wrong" and is for the war in Iraq and is some crazy religious freak.
So i guess i would have to say, if they were STRICT on the other side, no i couldnt be friends w. them.
IMO (and dont torch me bc this is MY OPINION), i find people like that ignorant and i cant keep company w/ people like that.

Funny...I don't have this problem with friends- it's family!!! My family just laughs at me, since I'm the lone "liberal" I was always the black sheep anyway!
But anyway...I've never allowed politics to affect my friendships.
Then again....I guess I haven't met too many 'extremes.' It's really only my uncle I get into huge arguments with!

I agree 
Although I don't think we differ on MOST...maybe we do, I don't really know!! I don't have very strong convictions so it's hard to know with the exception of obviously being pro life.
I have many friends of diff. political views, its healthy to have opinions and diff. views!! If we were all the same how boring would it be?
