You sure can. I have friends of a different party and we can talk about it. At work, I teach, we all discuss it all the time and there are many points of view. That's the great thing about America!
I will say my husband is active in one party and I know someone who goes out of her way to get a rise from him/ me by being critical of it. That's uncalled for.
Healthy discussion is great and necessary for democracy!

I think it depends on their attitude.
I have a friend that has a completely different affiliaton than I do. We don't talk politics in depth & if we do, we can joke about it.
I have a co-worker (same affiliation as my friend) that is probably the most pissy human being on the face of this Earth. Not only could she not discuss politics, she would get highly offended when it was joked about & could not discuss her points of view without storming out of the room & taking it out on everyone else.
So basically what it boils down to is ...another political party, yes I can be friends with them but high-strung, overly sensitive people, regardless of affiliation no way.

It really depends. To me it's not so much the party you are afiliated with, it's more your beliefs on social issues. I have several gay friends and I dont' think I could be close with anyone who is a homophobe. I'm ProChoice and I wouldn't exclude someone who is ProLife- I just wouldn't want to discuss it.

Absolutely. My political views have nothing to do with my friendships. When we talk about politics, we just "agree to disagree."
