and the tax payers will pay regardless.
it is a well known fact that placing someone on death row is MORE expensive than a sentence of life imprisonment...so that argument is out.
And it takes years. Almost all prisoners appeal and that process can take many years.
this is why I have problems with the death penalty.
it's function as a deterrent is non-existent.
it used to be...you commited a crime and were put to death...you were executed IN FRONT OF you peers and the rest of the populace watched and KNEW the consequences of committing such a crime.
now people scream for the death penalty...but WHO would watch it. I wonder how many people could watch someone hanged or electrocuted. it's a disgusting affair. I wonder how many peopel have the stomach to not only demand someoned death...but also to watch them receive the punishment.

I'm against the death penalty in all cases, so count me among those who feel she should not receive the death penalty if found guilty.
This does not make me any less outraged or disgusted about the crimes that were committed, nor does it in any way mean I feel she shouldn't be punished severely if she is guilty. What happened to this poor girl is heinous. My beliefs against the death penalty in no way mean I am complacent about crime and feel criminals shouldn't be punished.
I concur.
I don't agree with the death penalty in any case. This doesn't mean I don't think that people who chose to murder others shouldn't be punished severely; in fact I hope they die a miserable death.
I just could never bring myself to end the life of another-not matter how horrible they are and I don't think that the justice system is the appropriate entity to make that call.
My heart breaks for this poor sweet child and victims of heinous crimes the world over.

Yeah, sign me up!! I've watched enough of the SAW series to not be freaked out by death, especially if it was to erradicate some useless piece of garbage like her from the earth.

So true. B/c the criminals know they have lawyers who will continue to appeal and try to get them off. And because they know they will probably get to LIVE for 30 more years in jail before they even get to death row. Lucky them.

I am not against the death penalty, but in this case I feel that she shouldn't get it...it'd be an "easy way out" type of a punishment.
I think life in prison without parole is much better...let her wake-up every morning with the thought of what she did to deserve to live like this...let her live with this atrocious sin and guilt, and let her be tormented by the death of her little girl 'till she dies.

I have watched it... not electrocution or hanging, but leathal injection. I have done a LOT (years worth) of work relating to death penalty issues and various states' innocence projects. Through this work, I had communications with some death row inmates in NC (where I lived at the time). One whose case I worked on asked me to please be present as a witness to the execution. Note - witnesses are required by law. It broke my heart and it has scarred me forever, but I obliged...
Before everyone jumps all over me, my stance on the death penalty isn't in any way an attempt to diminish the loss and pain of the victims and their families. I did just as much work with murder victims as I did against the death penalty, though I do not want to speak about my personal experiences losing somoene to violence (and will not do so here, so please don't ask). Interestingly, there is a very large group called MVADP (Murder Victims Against the Death Penalty) with which I was involved for a long time... so even victims' families are divided on this issue.

I think it is absurd to think that b/c you don't agree with the death penalty that you feel any less outraged or sorry for the victims.
the two are not mutually INclusive IMO.

jess, this is exactly my stance. It's NORMAL to WANT to hurt, maime, kill, etc. someone who commits a heinous crime. Those feelings are completely normal, I think. Crossing over from having those feelings of outrage to a government program for state-sanctioned murder is, IMHO, quite a different thing.

these could be the mitigating circumstances I am referring to.
OR
she could be completely insane and devoid of even feeling remorse.
many things for the LAW to consider.

I agree. That's what I mentioned earlier. She's BEEN living with this shince Caylee disappeared. And she hasn't showed ANY remorse. If she happens to NOW show it. It's only because Caylee's been found and the walls are closing in. So in a sense. It's more for herself, than for Caylee.

No, they aren't. But that's what a lot of people think. I've been called every name in the book when I did the work that I did. One person even told me that I was an advocate for MURDER. Not murderers, murder. I was too pained to point out the irony in his statement.
This is an emotional issue on both sides and the things that get said to those who believe differently can be astonishing. Perhaps I'm being preemptively defensive, but that's just based on my years of experience working on this issue... Trust me, pitching prisioners' rights and anti-death penalty in NORTH CAROLINA of all places was not exactly a walk in the park...

I wanted her to die, but now I want her to live in solitary confinement with a photo of Caylee permanently affixed to the wall in front of her.
I don't think the picture of her daughter would make her feel anything.
I think if you really want to make her suffer show her a picture of her former life - partying at some club with her other dirtbag friends. That will make her feel bad, remorseful, like a caged animal.
All she cared about since her daughter was gone was being with her friends. I'm sure thats what she will miss, not her daughter.

I agree...I think I said that a few times. but we are not supposed to want the Law to think or operate that we do.
and that is MY argument in reference to the OP's question as to why, at this point, I feel she should not get the DP.

Oh my. I'll just say that I think the de-sensationalism of violence by movies, TV, etc to the point where we think we know what murder or death is because we watched it is a whole other thread.

I am actually really, really disturbed by the thought that violence on TV has desenstized someone so much that you think killing anyone wouldn't freak you out. Have you ever watched someone be put to death? All the movies in the world can't prepare you for that.
