Catholics who give up something for Lent...Sunday question
For Catholics who give up something during the season of Lent, were you taught that Sundays is a day off from what you "gave up"?
I recall Sundays being a day you had a "break" from your Lenten sacrifice. DH also Catholic, didn't recall being taught this.
Curious what others do or were taught and what is "right"?

Yes, I was taught that Sunday is a day off too.
However, this year we are doing a family rosary every night during lent and were not taking Sundays off from that.

I was taught it was, but in my family, there was always a reason to stray if it was somethimg food related. Meaning you could eat meat on Friday if you were pregnant or sick. I am not giving in this year, regarding what I gave up. I am also on a food detox from chocolate.

You can have what you have what you are abstaining from on sundays as long as you celebrated mass in sunday(or the vigil sat afternoon).It s because sundays durning lent are considered mini easters.

Ive always heard Sunday is a break too, but I never do that. I think it's sort of silly. So I give it up the entire time of lent.

Are Sundays Part of Lent?
Q: Last year my Catholic co-workers and I disagreed over whether Sundays are considered part of Lent. Each year I give up sweets for Lent, but I have always understood that I could eat them on Sundays during Lent. Some of my co-workers disagree. With Lent starting soon, I would like to know who is right on this issue.
A: Technically, Sundays are not part of Lent. Although we celebrate them liturgically as part of Lent, the Lord's Day cannot be a day of fast and abstinence. Six weeks of Monday through Saturday gives you 36 days. If you add to them Ash Wednesday and the three days after it, you get the 40 days of Lent.
Some people may find it easier to "give up" something for the entire time between Ash Wednesday and Easter, but you are correct in saying that Sundays are not part of the 40 days.

I was taught that Sundays are a break day, but I don't follow that. I give something up for the whole time.

It is a 40 day sacrifice minus 6 sundays again which are considered mini easters.

Oops...I should've reworded my response.
I've always been aware that there are more than 40 days, but in my upbringing, I was taught to make a sacrifice for the entire lenten season.
I find that there are subtle differences in the traditions of Catholicisn within different nationalities. My parents are immigrants from Poland and they gave something up for the entire Lenten season, so they passed this tradition onto me.

I was wrong when I said no day off. I looked it up and Sundays can not be anything other than the "Lord's Day." Just like Easter can't be a holy day of obligation because it is already a Sunday.
But, with that said, Lent is supposed to be about sacrafice and it cheapens it if you have a day off- just my opinion!

this post made me laugh -
last night, my husband took my 21 month old to his parents for dinner. My 21 month old brought thin mints to his grandpa since his grandpa LOVES them! I didnt go (was sick). When my husband got home, I asked if grandpa loved them and DH gave me a look  apparently he gave up cookies for lent  poor grandpa!
