Charging Extra for Plastic Bags???

News 12 Long Island's Antoinette Biordi is in Ronkonkoma where if Suffolk County has their way, they want to charge customers 5 cents for each plastic bag at supermarkets to give an incentive to shoppers to bring their own re-usable bag. What do you think of the idea? Tune in at 5 p.m. for the story.

I am all for reusable bags but charging me extra I think is ridiculous (especially since I use them around the house for garbage and kitty litter scooping).

I think they should offer an incentive to bring them bac for recycling instead.

I don't think it's a terrible idea- but I'll definitely be one of those people who has to pay it because even though I am constantly buying those reusable bags- I never seem to have them with me when need them

Re: Charging Extra for Plastic Bags???

Some stores do that already, and others give you a discount if you bring your own bags (which is in essence, a charge for using the plastic bags....)

Re: Charging Extra for Plastic Bags???

at least they offer them to buy. In aruba there are no plactic bags in the supermarkets...either boxes or the reusable ones

I for one think its a GREAT idea. Enough with all these plactic bags...we are killing the ground with them!

I don't see the big deal....Ireland was this way when I was there. I've started using reusable totes now when shopping. I have tons of plastic bags stocked up to use for the garbages.

Re: Charging Extra for Plastic Bags???

Not a bad idea.
That has been done in Germany for many, many years. I had a basket (when I rode my bike to the market) and expandable string bags for going grocery shopping.

I love the reusable bags that are sold at Waldbaums. They hold a lot !
I keep mine in the car so I don't forget them.

I know me, I'll go shopping and forget my bags and then I'll be stuck paying to use the ones from the store!

Re: Charging Extra for Plastic Bags???

Stinks at first because you'll always forget and have to pay...

But pretty soon it will save a LOT of plastic because everyone will start to remember to bring their reusable bags!

I do use my shopping bags for garbage and such, but that is still a plastic bag going into a landfill. Chat Icon

Re: Charging Extra for Plastic Bags???

I'm all for it. I already bring my own reuseable bags - and I would do so even if I wasn't getting a discount for using them. However, considering the discounts that the stores give, I've more than made my money back on them.

I think san francisco did this a few years ago, but it was $.17...there might be a complete ban now on them.

I would probably forget too. Chat Icon

But I am in favor of it. Plastic bags do not breakdown ever.

I wonder if going back to paper bags is an option?

You can still opt to buy grocery bags when you run out. I bet there are bags for this available for sale already although I never checked since I use grocery bags also.

On a separate yet related note: do hefty/glad garbage bags break down or are they just as bad for the environment?

Re: Charging Extra for Plastic Bags???

I do it every day (I live in Germany). You get used to it. I don't do huge shopping trips, but I'm used to it. And if you don't have one you buy one.

For those that have cats, you'll get plastic bags from other shops or other places. You'd be surprised how many plastic bags you use. I haven't had a problem yet.

I'm all for it. I've been using my own canvas bags for many years now. It's not that hard to keep them in my car and take them out when I head to a store.

I do it pretty regularly also (live in England) many supermarkets do give free bags, but you have to ask for them. I carry reusable bags in my car all the time and try to use them all the time, there is the odd time I forget them, but I do think paying for bags is a good way to cut down on them.

I was at the beach last week and I saw 3 plastic bags in the surf...thats pretty bad imo.

I am all for it. I always use re-useable bags. They are able to hold so much more. I just keep them in my car so I always have them with me.

Re: Charging Extra for Plastic Bags???

i can understand why they would be doing it, but i'm not the biggest fan of the idea either. i reuse the bags to bring my lunches into work, scoop up after my dogs on walks etc, i pay enough for grocieries, i don't really want to have to pay for bags too. just being honest.

I like it. A lot of people won't do something until they're forced to but then it becomes second nature.

As for animal waste:

They also make bags for the house.

There are two swells in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans larger than the size of Texas that are predominantly plastic bags and water bottles... making many fish sick and further throwing off the eco-system... same fish we ingestChat Icon

Many countries in the European Union charge quite a fee for plastic bags.

When Ireland imposed an almost $1. fee per bag, plastic bag usage dropped over 90%. Everyone carries reusable bags. Mine are always in my car, a fold up one is in my purse.
