I think they should offer an incentive to bring them bac for recycling instead.

I don't think it's a terrible idea- but I'll definitely be one of those people who has to pay it because even though I am constantly buying those reusable bags- I never seem to have them with me when need them

I don't think it's a bad idea. I bring my own bags anyway.

I'm all for this. Using a ton of plastic bags is such a waste.

Re: Charging Extra for Plastic Bags???

Great idea, but I think an even better idea would be for them to donate whatever they earn from the sale of the bags to recycling or environmental programs.

I know I don't always remember my re-usable bags. I would if I had to pay for them!

at least they offer them to buy. In aruba there are no plactic bags in the supermarkets...either boxes or the reusable ones

I for one think its a GREAT idea. Enough with all these plactic bags...we are killing the ground with them!

ITA!!!

There are two swells in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans larger than the size of Texas that are predominantly plastic bags and water bottles... making many fish sick and further throwing off the eco-system... same fish we ingestChat Icon

Many countries in the European Union charge quite a fee for plastic bags.

When Ireland imposed an almost $1. fee per bag, plastic bag usage dropped over 90%. Everyone carries reusable bags. Mine are always in my car, a fold up one is in my purse.

ITA!!! I second the idea of charging for bags and dont mind paying for them at all.

I used to live in Europe in the 90's and they already implemented that policy (25 cents per bag) and it really encourages you to bring your own bags.

I do wish that the stores offered more paper bags. In Stop and Shop, you specifically have to ask for them.

Re: Charging Extra for Plastic Bags???

I don't think it's a bad idea to charge. I have a couple of reusable bags but never remember to bring them when I'm shopping.

I have a question though, does the cashier still bag your stuff if you have reusable? Do you just hand them the bags?

I use my grocery bags for dirty diapers, but I know there are other things we can buy for that.

This sucks! Chat Icon

I know me, I'll go shopping and forget my bags and then I'll be stuck paying to use the ones from the store!

Just being honest here...Chat Icon

i was thinking the same thing! Chat Icon

Right?!

I mean, I'm not saying it's a bad idea, really. It's just that I know how I am; I'll totally forget my bags and I'll wind up paying for bags all the time!

I prefer to bag my own, but when there is a bagger at the register, they bag for me.

Re: Charging Extra for Plastic Bags???

I use reusable bags for the groceries, but I do take plastic bags for the garbage cans.

What's the difference between a plastic garbage bag and a plastic shopping bag in terms of impact on the environment?

I like it. A lot of people won't do something until they're forced to but then it becomes second nature.

As for animal waste:

Re: Charging Extra for Plastic Bags???

This is how they do this in Ireland. I think it's actually a really good idea. It was kind of funny though, we all went to go food shopping for our cabin and had no recycling bags (and weren't going to pay for plastic bags) so we just had to carry armfuls of groceries to the car... in the rain. I use them around the house for garbage and kitty litter scooping).

This is me, i use them for kitty litter scooping also, so to me I am recycling them since I use them for dual purpose. Otherwise I would have to buy the small plastic garbage bags to use.

I did read about some biodegradable "plastic' ones made from corn I have been meaning to look into

Re: Charging Extra for Plastic Bags???

I use them as garbage bags in my house. Taking my lunch, etc...

So now I won't buy them but will have to buy garbages bags (and trash the box....creating more waste) while I was recycling all along those plastic bags.

Exactly. We use them as garbage bags and for the kitty litter as well as bring other little things places. I'd rather get them for free and reuse them than have to waste money (I'm sure those special ones are somewhat pricey and do they even make tiny garbage bags?) buying them and then not reusing them. Maybe you should be able to get 1 or 2 free then have to buy the rest.

In theory I think its a good idea, but in practice, eh. sounds like a better way for stores to get more money than that they care about the environment.

Re: Charging Extra for Plastic Bags???

They do that here in Washington DC and have for more than a year. All of the proceeds go to the cleanup efforts for the Anacostia Watershed.
