I was raised in a family that did not d teacher gifts. Now that I have a child in school I am not sure how I feel about it yet. But this amount is absolutely crazy. And to give a Christmas bonus to directors and janitors IMO is crazy also.
20 years ago I was a teacher at a daycare and for the 3 years I had the job, did not get a single gift from any of the parents, ever for anything. Reading here it is completely commonplace but in my experience it just does not happen.
years ago, teachers didn't get $$ gifts or gift certificates. They were given home made cookies, small mugs and home made gifts from kids. If $$ was given it was just to show gratitude, small amount.
In general I was/am never a fan of giving one large gift where others determine how much I should give or spend, my budget might be very different from others. One poster stated $10 from every kid, that seems reasonable. $100 to me sounds like a lot.
add: I remember my mother giving to teachers and bus driver not to directors, principals, or janitor

I'd opt out and let whoever is doing the collection that the reason you are opting out is because you think the amount is insane.

Re: Class Gift-- What would you do?
I am stunned they have the gall to ask for so much money for teacher gifts. Stunned! Wow.
I definitely would not participate with that even if you gave "just" $75. I wouldn't give two cents towards it. And I'd tell that mom why.
$75 is also a lot of money in my opinion. We spend like $25 per teacher and bus driver. I don't gift the principal, lunch lady, janitor, etc. dude, I'm not made of money. And I can tell you having worked in schools, it is not expected. I always felt awkward accepting any kind of gift for doing my job. I can not imagine receiving a $500 gift! Honestly, it would make me really uncomfortable. It's insane.

Re: Class Gift-- What would you do?
Could you have misunderstood? Maybe they are collecting $100 total for each teacher. If it's $100 from each kid this will be the most insane thing I've heard in a long time.

$100 per kid! That is insane! Absolutely insane. I would make sure that isn't a typo. Is this a public or private school? I think if the Principal of a public school knew that parents were asking for $100 for a glass gift, there wouldn't be a note like that even going out.

Re: Class Gift-- What would you do?
That seems excessive for a class gift.
Are you sure it doesn't cover the whole year for parties, staff appreciation AND gifts for holidays and end of year?
$100 for whole year sounds reasonable but not for a class gift.

I don't know...I don't think it's so crazy. I give $50 each to main teacher (2) at DD's daycare. She goes 5 days a week, full day.
These teachers work hard and don't get paid much, I don't have a problem showing a little gratitude.

You must not live on LI . Teachers get paid VERY well here. Six figures and above with Summer's/holidays off (and no, I'm not saying they don't deserve it, before anyone chimes in lol)
Ohh I see it's pre-k. They make peanuts typically, but still...excessive.

Class Gift-- What would you do?
Imagine if a class of 25 each contributed $100. What do you get a teacher for $2,500?! Or even half of that. That's INSANE. **OHH I read it's pre-k and 10 kids with 2 teachers. Even still! $500?! That's just nuts to me.

Daycare teachers make very little so I have no problem giving them $50-$100. I have nothing but respect for teachers, but Long Island teachers make a decent salary so to give this much is just excessive to me.

I am a NYC teacher so I'm well aware of my salary- which is not fantastic, but that's another thread
But in any case, I wasn't referring to public schools. I'm assuming this is for a private daycare/school, in which case, teachers don't make much.

Re: Class Gift-- What would you do?
I know the nursery school that my child attends pays its teachers $15/hour. My BABYSITTER makes more...
That being said, we chipped in $40 (to be split among 3 teachers). I was complaining that THAT was too much!!!!!!!! It came to about $250 per teacher!! I am a teacher and I think that's WAY too much!

Re: Class Gift-- What would you do?
Okay pretty sure we live in the same area so I will throw in my 2 cents. For my daughter's pre-K class there are 7 students we are doing $40 each per teacher so $80 total per kid. I would not think that $100 is too much to ask although I have never been asked to do anything that high. Typically if the class gift is less than $40 per kid I will get a little something in addition like a box of chocolate or an orchid from Whole Foods. Let's be honest, this is a wealthy area and the preschool teachers make peanuts. I almost consider it volunteer work for the amount of time and dedication some of these teachers put in. If you are uncomfortable going with the $100 I would just tell them that you were planning to get something on your own. I don't think that anyone will think twice about it.

Re: Class Gift-- What would you do?
I am always in the LIF minority when it comes to gift amounts. That is crazy. To be honest I spend $50 on my siblings. I would never give that much to a teacher. I think they collected $10 for each pre-k teacher.

Re: Class Gift-- What would you do?
To me there is a big difference between daycare teachers and prek not in skills or ability but the amount of time they are spending with your child. Daycare teachers often are with the same kids from early in the morning to evening, caring for their every need. Daycare teacher get paid peanuts I know I was one with a degree and made less than $25k a year. Preschool if usually part time and they aren't changing diapers, feeding your children, getting them to nap and caring for them all day. Also in daycare most people are giving their own gifts and don't do class gifts because kids are constantly changing in the daycare setting. I was given nothing to $500 cash through out the years so it really depended.
In the preschool/elementary setting when you give a gift from the class its generally 10-20 per child. Our PTA has a $5 per teacher rule. Most parents than give their own gift. I do $25gc for each teacher on top of the class gift.

Re: Class Gift-- What would you do?
That's crazy.
I was always class mom for my daughter and the most we asked for was $25, for their prek graduation year, though we had more than 10 kids in the class.
I think the amount is insane, and I also wouldn't feel comfortable giving some random person I don't know $100.
