That's a crazy amount to ask for. My daughter is in half day pre-k and the class mom asked for $10 from each child. We aren't particiapting bc we are giving our own gifts (spending about $25 each). You shouldn't feel uncomfortable giving your own gift instead.

That's insane. I would give my own gift.
I'm a teacher and get a coffee mug filled with Hershey kisses from the dollar store every year from multiple kids (I have SO many coffee mugs & I don't even drink coffee  ), or a DD gift card for 10 bucks. I would feel so uncomfortable getting a crazy expensive gift like that.

I think $100 is way too much to contribute and I would be uncomfortable getting a gift that expensive. I normally receive a $10-25 gift card to starbucks or dunkin' as gifts and truly appreciate that.
One of the best gifts I received was a heartfelt letter from a parent thanking me for the hard work I have put in with her student, along with a thank you letter from the student.

Agree with others that you should do what is comfortable for you and DH. It is thought that counts.
Having said that, 100$ is not an insane amount for a daycare/preschool gift if it's a full day program. As a PP said, preK and daycare teachers make pitifully low salaries. Inspite of that, my daughter's full day preschool teachers are so dedicated and loving-I feel like the 100$ I spend on them once a year is a small token of appreciation. I am organizing a class gift but there is no minimum. I ask people to contribute whatever they feel is comfortable. In previous years, it has worked out to about 100-150$ per teacher for a class of 20 kids. So just enough for them to indulge themselves a little bit or most often they get something for their kids/families.
For my son's elementary school teachers and staff who make much more $$ than I do at my job, I don't do more than 5$ a person for the specials/secuirty guards. The class gift 10$ a kid/yr covers the teacher's gift for the holidays and end of year.

I am giving very/abnormally generous gifts to DD's daycare teachers so when I first read this I was like "ehhh, I wouldn't nitpick over $25 and just fork over the whole $100" but then I re-read the specifics and HELL NO. I'm giving the daycare teachers a lot because they feed her, listen to her scream like a maniac and wipe her butt. No pre-k teacher, teaching HALF DAY pre-k is doing any of that. That is beyond excessive.
I would not participate in the class gift and use the money to get something on your own.

That is a ridiculous amount to ask from every kid in the class. I would say $5-20 per kid is reasonable, depending on the size of the class. I think it would make a teacher feel very uncomfortable to accept such a large amount of money as a gift. A $100 gift card from the class is reasonable, not $1000!

I just want to point out that the OP said there are TWO teachers. So it's $50 per teacher. That means each teacher would get a $500 gift card if all the kids participate.

But the OP said it's not a full day program. It's half day. And just under ten kids in the class. As you said, 100-150 per teacher total is fair. But this would be just under $500 gifted to each teacher. Insane!!

I am a NYC teacher so I'm well aware of my salary- which is not fantastic, but that's another thread
But in any case, I wasn't referring to public schools. I'm assuming this is for a private daycare/school, in which case, teachers don't make much.
I thought pre-k makes the same amount as a reg teacher, if I'm wrong I'm now corrected. I still don't think its my job to supplement everyone's salaries bc they don't earn a lot. I still think $100 is too much in general :)

I understand what you're saying.
But for me it's not really about how much you want to give. It's about asking for that much. What if people don't have it to give.
Someone else may only be able to afford $20 to show gratitude. So it would put them in a very uncomfortable position.
I think that's a heck of a lot to ask. But not necessarily a lot to give if you have it.

I worked in a private special needs preschool. The teachers made less than a McDonald's employee salary (I am not exaggerating) and weren't treated very well by the administration either. It was an absolute disgrace.
That said, I completely agree that holiday gifts should not be a supplement to their income. In my mind (and wallet), they are mean to be tokens of appreciation, and I personally think a lot of parents nowadays way overdo it.

I work at a private prek and I make more tutoring 2x a week than my monthly income. Even still I think 100 per kid is crazy.
I wish I could give my son's teachers and therapists more than I do, bc I know they work their a$$es off with him, but at the end of the day, I give what I can and hope they don't think I appreciate them less than someone who can afford to give more. I never judged any gift, big or small from the families at my school. Like the pp said, gifts are token of appreciation, not a supplemental income.
