Cold Cut Question
Who here eats cold cuts? Anyone?
I will admit that I had Subway and it's one of the only things I have been craving - and it kept my stomach calm for awhile. I got turkey and asked them to toast the meat on the bread hoping that the heat would kill any listeria bacteria - the meat came out steaming but I'm not sure how hot the toaster gets?? I feel guilty now...but it was sooooo goood...It doesn't help that I have been craving bologna and cheese I can get it from the deli and bring it home and fry it I guess - but it's not how I want it...I want it straight from the deli - cold...
I'm just wondering if I am living on the edge here...and does toasting the meat make it any safer?

Re: Cold Cut Question
I usually don't unless I heat them in the microwave until they are steaming. Now of course there have been a few occasions where I have had them but I still try to avoid them best I can.
From what I heard toasters at subway, quiznos, etc. is not enough; Your sandwich will not get hot enough from just the toaster alone. I've heard to always nuke them in the microwave too! So if I have gotten a sandwich from those places, I usually heat it up in the microwave to be safe.
I also didn't touch cold cuts until I was out of my first trimester. It made me so nervous.

Re: Cold Cut Question
see it's funny b/c they say to use the microwave but that is one of things i have really been avoiding ....i always tried not to use the microwave even before i was pregnant and now that i am pregnant i really really really try to avoid it - i don't trust microwaves we have relatives in other parts of the world who don't use them and i can't see how they are 100% safe (even though they say they are fine to use pregnant or not)

Re: Cold Cut Question
I'm not a big cold cut person pregnant or not. I haven't eaten any, but I don't really want any either. That said, I had a really rough first trimester and lost a substantial amount of weight if I felt like cold cuts I would have eaten them. Personally, I feel comfortable buying cold cuts from a deli knowing that the risk for listeria is so low. I've never eaten at a subway, but if the machines were clean I'd assume I'd feel the same way.
I have to tell you though that if I felt like sushi would have made me feel better I would have eaten that too, so perhaps I'm pretty lax.
My doctor is also very relaxed and tells me everything in moderation is fine including caffeine, cold cuts, and sushi. I say do what works for you! and enjoy whatever food you can!

Re: Cold Cut Question
I haven't, but that is because I haven't really wanted it. I really only eat turkey and I jsut havent been in the mood. Not sure about the toaster, but try not to feel bad about it! My dr. said it is fine if you know the place is fresh where you are getting it from and you don't eat it every day.
I would have eaten anything in my first trimester that made my stomach feel even remotely close to ok.

Re: Cold Cut Question
My first pregnancy with DS I did not. I was nervous and stuck by all the "rules". This time around I eat whatever I want. I have a regular COLD turkey sandwich from the deli at least once a week. I'm not worried at all and can't believe I went an entire 9 months with DS skipping it. But you have to do what you feel comfortable with.

Re: Cold Cut Question
I LOVE cold cuts and any italian meats like soppressata and pepperoni and prosciutto, but my doctor said no coldcuts or soft serve ice cream (cuz of the bacteria in the machines )
I'm gonna avoid them, I already miscarried once and don't want to take any chance.

Re: Cold Cut Question
I have. And no, not zapped, just off the slicer and onto my sandwich. I trust the places I have had from and the thought of steaming cold cuts makes me .

Re: Cold Cut Question
Ive eaten turkey sandwiches from the deli, but always made sure it was a place ive been to before which I knew was clean.
I do sometimes get cold cuts from the supermarket. When I get home I heat them up in the microwave until steaming and let them cool in the fridge before making a sandwich.

i am the same way with microwaves. i try to avoid using mine at all costs. BUT i "nuke" my cold cuts in the morning when I make my lunch for the day.
i just love cold cuts more than i don't trust the microwave!!!

Re: Cold Cut Question
I eat cold cuts whenever I want them. I've had subway and deli sandwhiches, I go to the same delis...I wouldn't go to a deli in an unfamiliar town or a place I've never been before...but places I've been going for years and never gotten sick from still get my business!
The only things I totally avoid is raw fish and alcohol.
My doctor never even said anything about cold cuts.

Re: Cold Cut Question
I aked my Dr. about cold cuts, she sort of laughed. She said she is more worried about me undercooking meat, than me eating cold cuts. She said just watch the sodium, but that I could have them.

Re: Cold Cut Question
I eat them. If I remember I heat them if not then I dont! I ate them with DS too.
Dont worry toaster heat is fine! Steaming is steaming! My OB said to heat them to steaming!
ETA: on your comment about craving, its funny because DH says the only time I crave tuna fish is when I am pregnant. I dont know if my kids just like tuna or I hate knowing I am not supposed to really have something that causes it! (but I still eat tuna here and there!)
