Common Core & Private Schools
Sorry if this is an ignorant question ... my kids aren't in school yet.
Do private schools on Long Island participate in Common Core? Do they complete the same testing? I know there is testing through NYS but this is different, correct?
I've heard so much negativity about Common Core in public schools. My Facebook feed is full of moms who want me to sign petitions to end it.

Some do, some don't. You have to call and ask or check their web page. The standardized testing for 3-8th grade IS based on common core curriculum though, so the schools that don't participate in CC...not sure about testing.

My kids' school (Smithtown Christian) just officially decided not to adopt common core.

Common Core & Private Schools
What happens when student does not meet NY CC standards (opt out of test or school does not participate in CC)? How do they graduate?

You can't opt out of the Regent's test in high school. Those are not the same as the standardized tests in grades 3-8.

Re: Common Core & Private Schools
It depends on the school. Most independent schools don't follow common core because they don't have to. Many religious schools accept state funding and therefore will eventually have to use the common core model.

Well many private schools do not follow common core. My private school did not do regents and it appears they still do not take regents exams. Private schools run differently from public. You cannot avoid CC in public and must take the regents. Private school is the way to go if you want to avoid a lot of those issues.

That is probably a thing of the past. If you want a diploma in NYS, you have to take the Regent's test. There is no way around it (unfortunately). I wish it was as easy as enrolling my son in private school so he didn't have to take them to graduate (he likely won't pass them and won't get a diploma).

Common Core & Private Schools
Im confused (normal) so private school students are NOT required to take same NYS tests (for diplomas & passing grade) as public school students?

The standardized tests are not used to measure if your child will pass their current grade or not. Those test scores take 6 months to generate, and you don't get them until the Summer. They are used to evaluate the teachers in grades 3-8, and basically nothing else, because they have zero impact on their grades. But, your kid does not have to take those tests (other than the Regent's in HS). You can opt out. Zero impact. But, your child would still be learning the CC curriculum, and would be taught for the test.

Yes, they take them in private school. Another poster said her school doesn't, but I think that is very very rare. I looked into private school to avoid Regent's for my son, and they all required it to receive a diploma.

Well you might want to look again. Friends does not. I just asked my friend who has a senior graduating from Kellenberg with honors and she said Kellenberg and Chaminade also do not take them. Some private do take them but not all do. I believe the school has to show their standards are as or more rigorous than the regents.

Some private schools do not take them. Many do take them. You must check with each school. I understand the school must demonstrate their standards are the same or higher than the regents.

It unfortunately not that easy. The schools I believe that do not take it are not easy to get in and turn away many who do not meet certain standards. I know people who applied to friends who were not accepted. So it might be very hard to get into a school that does not offer give regent exams.

I went to a Catholic HS and took all the Regents exams that a public school would take.

The rules for diplomas in NYS is in the mist of changing and all students regardless of private or public schools have to take the regents tests to receive a diploma. I believe that is it starting with the kids entering 10th grade this year so those that have juniors and seniors are not affected.

Re: Common Core & Private Schools
According to my friend who also has a 9th grader. That it is a private institution and they have been told no regents. She said they take comps which are harder than regents and do not have to take the regents. It does not apply to private schools who demonstrate that their students take a harder exam. She is 100% positive.

It makes sense then if those schools have testing that is harder than NYS Regent's. Obviously my child with special needs will never get into a school like that, so I won't bother looking into it again

Definitely won't benefit a child with special needs I think for some of those schools testing to get in is tough. They turn a lot away.
Have you looked into.schools like Waldorf? I know they are anti testing at least in lower grades. Not sure what they do now but I knew a few with severe dyslexia who went there and were very successful. Less focus on testing more on a well rounded creative approach.

Correct. Kellenberg and Chaminade do not take regents tests. In fact, their own set of tests are much harder if you ask anyone that has taken them.

Re: Common Core & Private Schools
Independent schools do not have to offer the regents courses. That's why they're independent schools. Many do offer them to compete with catholic high schools or public schools, but they are not required to offer them unless they accept a certain percentage of state funding, at which point means they are no longer considered independent anyway.

That's great if they do not have too, but can I ask what type of diploma they are receiving? There is no more local diploma, there are only regents diplomas so do private schools offer their own.
