Common infant allergies.. going to allergist

My DS #2 is 11 weeks old and im told he has a milk allergy based on + blood in stool test.. now keep in mind this was a sample from a diaper that took him so much to go from being constipated 5 days. i didnt see blue in spot but dr. says was. So we have been through all the formulas.. from similac, soy, alemintum and now we are on elecare. DS continues to vomit on this formula even more so when we add oatmeal to help hold him over because it is predigested as per doctors request. he is soo uncomfortable because of the reflux after he eats.. but my mommy intuition tells me this isnt the case so im having him tested for allergies. Doctor said bring a list of allergies i want to test for in addition to the common ones.. so my question are there any suggestions besides dairy, soy, wheat and eggs. I know this is a controversial subject and not 100% accurate but at least i will have a basis. I was told i am sensitive to corn while i was pregnant during my testing so i wonder what he is. Im so upset and cry becasue he is always crying and never happy my maternity leave has been so tough seeing him like this and it kills me to go back to work next week while he is so upset.

We had Eliza tested for dairy and soy at 4 months, but the allergist warned that the skin tests are NOT reliable that young.

we did skin testing around 18 months? thsi was with ds #1,my ENT wanter him allergy tested before doing tubes. now, ds #2 has a dairy allergy- blood in stool, it was visible even to me. both my ped and allergist told me allergy testing is completely unreliable at this age.

Re: Common infant allergies.. going to allergist

My DS has been diagnosed as having a milk protein and soy allergy too. He has had obvious blood in his stool. We've also been through all the formulas with continued bleeding. We've been seeing a gastroenterologist who told us that allergy testing is completely unreliable. If my son continues to bleed, we are going to have to do a colonoscopy to biopsy his intestine and find out exactly what he's reacting to. He told us as did a second opinion that in an infant, that is the only way to get a definitive answer since nothing we've done is working.

If you do go through with the testing, I guess it should cover dairy, soy, corn, nuts, and eggs.

i posted above, i have a 4 mo who had visible blood in the stool. my ped also said if the blood doesnt clear up after we eliminate dairy/soy, he would need a biopsy, since that is the only definitive answer.
i wouldnt put an infant through skin testing, just based on what i was told.

. DS had a severe soy and milk protein allergy. He had visible blood in his stool on every formula we tried. He also had reflux... Allergy testing at such a young is unreliable.. Give the elecare some time to work.. It can take weeks for the intestines to heal and the blood to disappear.. Maybe try medication for the reflux..

Could be an allergy to the oatmeal... Maybe try something else.. What brand of oatmeal are you using?

If it is Gerber oatmeal, there is soy in it... DS had the same problem with it as did my friends son.. It isn't on the label. Gerber likes to put so in a lot of their products but it isn't on the label..

Re: Common infant allergies.. going to allergist

We had tried gerber oatmeal, then earth best now on beach nut. So do you think if i change to rice that this would be bad? but i think what i have is gerber rice which prolly contains soy as well then right?

I don't think you're wrong to want an answer, but just keep in mind that you might not get one. I had DD skin tested around 4-5 months (it wasn't too bad at all), and according to that she wasn't allergic to anything, despite visible blood in her stool. I had her blood tested a few weeks ago after what appeared to be an allergic reaction to eggs, and it still came back negative. If it is a sensitivity rather than an allergy it may not show up on any of the testing. Good luck. Chat Icon

I would stay away from gerber.. Try rice cereal and see if that helps.. I don't think it will hurt to try it. DS was on rice cereal for his reflux too..

My son also has the reflux and milk protein allergy. I was told that the majority of milk allergy babies are also allergic go soy so be careful with that oatmeal. We are on Neocate now (tried enfamil and nutramigen first) and after 12 days still visible blood in stool. He has his good days and bad. I know the feeling you are having. We have an appointment with a GI doctor this week. I was hoping for a better answer than a biopsy, but I guess we'll see. : (

Re: Common infant allergies.. going to allergist

Not all allergies show on blood tests even for adults. I have a life threatening shellfish allergy (anaphylaxis) and test negative on bloodwork. MD told me it's because they only test for some of the proteins. I also test positive to eggs, but I have never had a reaction to them.

DD2 is going through a lot of this. We are on Neocate which is similar to Elecare. It takes time to work, like a PP said, the body has to heal. We were also told that allergy testing at that age is highly unreliable. We have an appointment coming up with an allergist since DD2 just had a reaction to wheat.

If he is refluxing that badly, will they consider putting him on medications, like Zantac or prevacid, to stop the burning/discomfort? It may not stop the spitting up, but will definitely help with the discomfort. It definitely helped DD2 with the pain part, she was much more comfortable, even though she still was like a fountain.......... maybe ask the Dr about using rice or even using thick it to thicken the formula if you don't feel the oatmeal is working?

Hugs to you, I've been where you are and there is nothing more frustrating or heartbreaking than knowing your baby is hurting and feeling completely helpless.........

i wouldnt put an infant through skin testing, just based on what i was told.

My son is 3 months and had visible blood too. I'm BF but when trying to change over to formula, the bleeding increased. I'm hoping to avoid the colonoscopy, but if I have to, we will do it to get an answer.

It's amazing how many people are going through this! I hate to see the babies suffer, but I'm glad I'm not alone. My son was still bleeding despite weeks on the neocate, so we stopped all formula and I'm BFing on a total elimination diet.

Re: Common infant allergies.. going to allergist

DD had a severe dairy/soy protein allergy. We went through basically what you did. She could not have oatmeal as most had soy. We ended up with I think Earth's Best- was soy free(?). We went to gastro and they did a sonogram to make sure she was digesting properly..I had to feed her a bottle while they did it.
I too was told skin testing so young is very inaccurate. We did have DD tested at 12 months because she did have reactions to some soy/dairy..she tested negative and we slowly introduced the foods back in and she is now 16 months and no known allergies. She tested completely negative for dairy, soy, fish, eggs & nuts.
I don't think you're wrong to want answers..we all hate to see our children suffer and not know what's wrong.
If he's doing okay on the elecare (which is what DD was on) why are you addding oatmeal? Just curious? Have you tried rice cereal? I think that is supposed to help more with reflux...is he being treated separately for the reflux? They may be two different issues...Chat Icon Chat Icon

I was told by doctor to put oatmeal in elecare because his reflux was so bad and adding oatmeal was to help hold longer between feedings and not spit up as much. he is on zantac as well. we have had upper gi series and sonos as well
