Commuter Tax
I was talking about this with DH and we came to the conclusion that this is "Location Discrimination". People pay enough for the MTA fare, now they are going to have to pay a tax because of where they work and live?! WHy did they get rid of it in the first place?

I know- I feel like I should not have griped about tolls when I lived in Queens (off topic, but why pay a toll from one borough to another? ) because now I spend about $200 a month in gas.
I heard a snippet on the news that Bloomie thinks that since property values in the 'burbs are so high, that commuters should be taxed. I don't understand the connection, especially since property taxes are also so high.
If the city needs money so badly, I wish he's go after the $36 million that NYS owes the NYC schools.

Re: Commuter Tax
I don't know, I see both sides of it. First of all, the amount you would be missing from your paycheck would be so minimal (.45% - if you make $55K it's less than $8/paycheck) and I can understand what he's saying. NYC provides many services, including but not exclusive to, the counterterrorism safety precautions. All of the suburbanites are benefiting from this, why shouldn't they help pay for it? And he's absolutely right about the property value in the suburbs increasing and decreasing on the rise and fall of the city's economy, safety and positive perception. I kind of agree with him that people who live in the suburbs but work in Manhattan should "kick in".
That said, it'll never pass. It was rendered unconstitutional by the state Supreme Court under Giuliani, I don't see them overturning that. Although I think people who live in NJ and work in the city have to pay some sort of NY state income tax - I don't see why this would be different.

YES but if you are only making 55K plus having to spend about (what is it $300 PLUS) on the LIR ALONE...not to mention the subways and and buses....MONTHLY
the extra 8 taken out certainly does effect you...
EVERY year these rates go up and up.
And although i understand the who...terrorism thing....the "suburbanites are paying out the nose to come into the city ALREADY Taxing them is ridiculous IMO

Don't forget the subway too. LOL !!!
Too bad I can't afford to live in the city. I wonder if the people who live in the city who commute to Nassau/Suffolk will have to pay it too.

Re: Commuter Tax
This is such crap! I read the Newsday article this morning on the LIRR - for which I spend $375 a month to ride...for a grand total of $4,500 per year.
Now they want to tax our salaries again? I'm so soooo mad about this.

Exactly!!! Subway = add on another $100 a month. (Which makes it $475/mo and $5700 year for the MTA and LIRR)
Then I have to pay for a permit to park in the LIRR lot at the station. I have to pay for gas to drive to the station, insurance on my car, car payments...
Oh and the LIRR has the nerve to ask ME to clean up the trains with their "Clean Train Campaign"? I don't think so. I'll take out my trash but I'm not cleaning up the train.

Re: Commuter Tax
I'm with Leeners. When I commuted to the city, I didn't like it, but I do think it is fair to ask commuters to pay. The city provides services - police, fire department, hospitals - to commuters too.
Maybe what should happen is that the city should get more of a portion of the tax we already pay - but the other counties probably wouldn't go for that.

Re: Commuter Tax
In addition to people paying for transit from the burbs to the city, they also spend money during the work day, which benefits the city's economy. People shop on their lunch hour, go out for lunch, stay after work for drinks and dinner.

Yeah, but from 9-5 when LI'ers are in the city they are using the city's services.

Re: Commuter Tax
The city relies on people who live in the burbs and work in the city.
What about the people who provide the services- police, firefighters, doctors, etc. Should they be taxed if they do not live in NYC?
I know in the case of the DOE, MOST of my co-workers live outside the city. And since people are not banging down the door to teach here, taxing those who are willing is just not fair, IMO. We aren't taking jobs away from people who live in the city. Then it would be another story.

The LIRR had a million (or was it billion) dollar surplus this year. How about using that to cover the debt owed by the city instead of taxing us? My paycheck has already been taxed over $15,000 this year and the year isn't over yet.

Exactly - For which all LOng Islanders already pay. So why should I have to pay even more in NYC? I dont live here? In fact I've never once used their emergency services in all the years Ive been in the city.

Sure they do - the police, the sanitation dept., the firefighters. Everyone does.
Asking if police, fireman, doctors should pay tax if they commute is like asking if any of us should pay taxes - we do b/c it pays for the infrastructure we all benefit from.
I wouldn't like it, but I can see the argument for it.

I don't see how that's relevant to this at all. It's just as hard, if not harder to live in the city. It's lower NY, not LI, that's incredibly expensive.
