sorry, quick question...since I pay city tax, I live in SI, does this include me as well? I commute to the city.
I would think not, since you already pay taxes to the city.

SI is part of New York City. You already pay.
I live in NJ and commute into NYC and I have to pay, so why shouldn't people on LI?

Nope, you're part of the city. This would extend to all 5 boroughs.

Sure they do - the police, the sanitation dept., the firefighters. Everyone does.
Asking if police, fireman, doctors should pay tax if they commute is like asking if any of us should pay taxes - we do b/c it pays for the infrastructure we all benefit from.
I wouldn't like it, but I can see the argument for it.
SO then LI have to pay DOUBLE for said services?
WHY should that be? Just because they work there? IMO that is wrong Nobody should have to pay double for services like that

My question as well. I'm not sure I understand how it is constitutional to make NJ commuters pay, but not LI commuters

I agree.
What about reverse commuters?

Re: Commuter Tax
I see both sides.
There are so many people that live outside of NYC that commute into Manhattan -- mostly for a bigger paycheck. The city does provide services to everyone...fire, police, anti-terrorism, sanitation, etc. Hopefully no one needs to use the emergency services but they are available. It's like insurance you pay whether you use it or not.
I do think in recent years the scales have tipped back a bit and that a large number of employers & employees have moved their place of business to Long Island & NJ because of the cost of doing business in NYC. I wonder if that was analyzed, how the numbers would look. Nassau county does have a higher sales tax then NYC...I wonder if they are able to get income that way? I am not sure about Suffolk.

No - you already pay NYC tax. The commuter tax is only for people that do not live in the five boroughs.

Re: Commuter Tax
Posted by MrsERod people on LI already pay a tax from their paychecks, and we're part of the State.
NJ is an entirely different State. To me, that's the difference.
The money paid by LIers is going to the State, not the City, though. Maybe that's what needs to be changed, the budget. Whatever it is, I 150% understand the need to have people who spend, at minimum 40 hours a week (approximately 23% of their time) to pay a very small percentage (not even half a percentage point) of their salary to keep NYC running well.

what COMPLETELY amazes me is Bloomberg's timing in EVERYTHING.
Right BEFORE the election, it was announced that the Firefighters finally had a decent contract. This after 2 1/2 years without one!
NOW, having won the election, he's renewed the call for the commuter tax!!!??
I'm sure all those commuters who voted for Bloomberg are jumping for joy!!!
Actually the commuters affected by the tax didn't get to vote in the mayoral representation.
Hmmmn...where did we hear about taxation with out representation before?

I can see the argument for this as well. If you work in a county other than the one to which you pay income tax, I can see a small tariff being placed on your income as fair.

It's called politics It has nothing to do with Bloomberg as a person - this is what EVERY politician does during their last term - try to push through bills that they believe in but may not be super popular.

I don't think that a .45% tax warrants a vote anywhere. I pay a hell of a lot more than that in sales tax in Nassau/Suffolk counties and I don't get to vote there, do I??
BUT, I am all for fairness. Not voting for the mayor, that's ridiculous, but a single commuter seat on the City Council would not be outrageous.

I know what it's called, it all hypocritical IMO. if Bloomberg believed in this commuter tax so much, then he would have pushed for it in his first term.
Uh, he did.
Edited to add a direct quote from Newsday. I actually thought it was more like 2002 but apparently it was 2003.
When Bloomberg sought a commuter tax from the state during a severe fiscal crunch two years ago, it stirred similar rebuke. But months later, the mayor came away instead with a state pickup of $2.5 billion in old city debt.

Once again, I am affected by LI's decisions every day. I don't get a vote for the Nassau County Executive or mayor of Carle Place. Really, I think this is an ineffective argument.

Uh, he did.
uh - I know..i was being sarcastic..
he was quite successful on his first attempt, wasn't he.
That didn't read as sarcasm at all.
Anyway, he was rather successful - he got 2.5 billion dollars of debt rebuked from the State. The point was the $ more than anything else.
As I said in my first post on this topic, I don't believe it will pass since it was rendered unconstitutional by the State Supreme Court back under Giuliani and I don't believe there have been enough changes within the court between then and now to overturn the verdict. No one was arguing if it would pass but rather whether or not it should.

Re: Commuter Tax
So should people that live in Suffolk but work in Nassau pay commuter tax?
If you cross a state line to work you get 100% of that state's taxes back. Why should Suburban commuters be the ones to fix an NYC deficit?
Sure our house values are higher because we live near a big city but in turn so are our property taxes.
I strongly urge all commuters to write to your state reps now. There are 6 weeks before sessions start. Maybe it was found unconstitutional before but that doesn't mean it will stay that way. They all have their own sites and links for email.
Find your local reps here.
My suggestion is raise the tax on cigarettes, alcohol, hotel rooms, plays, shows, bus tours. The luxury items as opposed to taxing the middle working class commuters.
