I don't care if it's a penny per paycheck, no one is taking any of my hard earned money if I don't have a say as to how much and where is goes.
You DO HAVE SAY. Its called... "work in the county you live in".

The state picked up the billions of dollars in debt tab last time. And like I said in my other post - what abut the millions in surplus that the MTA now has from increasing our fares? YOu know what they want to do with that? Give me a free ticket to NYC during the holiday. What the h e l l do I need that for when I already have a monthly pass and can travel when ever I want?

IMO LI if they are going to be affected by Bloombergs decisions should be able to VOTE whether he is OUR mayor or not
Give me a break. Since when are you FORCED to work in NYC? If you live in County A... that has nothing to do with County B. If you want to pursue employment in county B... you are to abide by their rules.
If you don't like it... stay in county A.
Why are commuters being hit up to fix the city's debt in the first place? We already were hot up to fix the MTA/LIRRs debt. Do you remember how much the fares were JUST increased?

The MTA is NOT the city of NY. You're talking about a single city agency, whose services you are both paying for and utilizing... That really doesn't have anything to do with the commuter tax Bloomberg is talking about.
And, again, people come to work in the city because they make more money here. Well, either stay out on LI and use and pay only your own county services or accept the bigger check and **** it up when the city expects you to help pay for the things they're providing for you. (Kathy - this is the general "you", don't want it to seem like I'm ganging up on you in particular.)

I do not get my NYC takes back- I pay about $600 a year to NYC b/c I live in NJ- they do not give me that money back.
Your employer is screwing you bigtime then.
There is NO non-resident NYC tax... for anybody.
My boss lives in PA... works in NYC... and pays absolutely NO NYC taxes.
Explain to me how come he pays no NYC taxes... but you have to pay NYC taxes living in NJ?
Better check your paystub again... or check with your HR department.
If you are paying NYC taxes... that money is coming back to you on your state tax return every year.

The MTA is privately owned company... that gets funding from the city. The city unfortunately has no control over the MTA so there is no use for complaining about the MTA. I think they **** too... but its like pissin in the wind with them.

My point was just that the MTA is PART of the city. After misleading the city and the employees of the city, they raised fares. Now, they have millions of dollars in surplus money. Since they are a city agency, my point was that they should take their millions in surplus that they reipped us off for and do one of 2 things with it.
1. Give it back to the people the ripped off or 2. Give it to the city to help fix the debt so the city doesnt have to rip us off again
Something else I dont understand is this: Why is it that the poor suckers who commute are always the first on the list to get hit with the det of NYC and NYC related agencies?
The MTA is broke - let's hit up the commuters! Great idea! Manhattan is in mega debt...well, who else would we go to - let's hit up the commuters!!
It really makes me mad because the commuters seem to be an 'easy fix' to the city's problems all the time. I don't think this is the answer. Nor do I think it's fair.
Yes, I work in NYC and yes I do make more money than I would if I works on LI but I'm already paying close to $6,000 extra to work in NYC. Isn't that enough already?

Not for nothing... but some of the comments I read here from long islanders blaming bloomberg and the city about this commuter tax... I find VERY obnoxious.
People seem to think they can work in NYC for the larger salary and get a free ride.
Has anyone ever tought that maybe PART of the reason the city is so much in debt is because of the additional "service" it has to render to all the NJ/Westchester/Long Island commuters that come in to work?
Perfect example:
If you buy that cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee at the Hicksville train station... drink it on the train... then throw it out in the garbage can on 6th avenue and 42st... do you think that garbage pickup is FREE?
The city benefited absolutely NOTHING from that sale of coffee... yet its the city's resonsibility to pick up your trash?
I rest my case.

Re: Commuter Tax

My bus fare is 5.00 each way. But I buy an unlimited for 41.00 a week. Just looking to compare. thanks!

Then I wouldn't worry about what the NYC mayor does.
Hell... I will be legally a resident of Nassau as of Thursday this week. But you won't see me complaining about a commuter tax.
If it happens... it happens. But I wouldn't be so short-sighted since I would understand WHY its happening.
Besides... IMO they won't be passing any commuter tax anytime soon... so its all a moot point anyways.
The last commuter tax that got eliminated in 1999... they capped the tax per person every year at a measly $500 buks. Hell... I already paid over 2k in NYC taxes this year alone, its not enough money that will break anyone's budget.

Re: Commuter Tax

As far as paying NYC taxes... there is no sales tax on clothing under $110 any longer in NYC so I actually AM paying a lot more in LI than I would here.
Okay but there is still tax on food, drinks, and services, and that's where commuters are spending alot... in essence giving back to city a portion of what they 'take' by getting higher paychecks working there. And food and services are more expensive in the city than they are on LI. I don't think you are paying "alot" more in LI at all. You are probably paying about the same.
Additionally, I am not making money in LI and then going back to NYC to spend it. That's what commuters are doing here.
Alot of the people who make their money in the city also seek their entertainment in the city. So in addition to what they spend in the city during a work week, many commuters shell out big money for broadway, restaurants, and other city entertainment. I don't think as many city people come out to LI for their weekend entertainment.

Yes, I work in NYC and yes I do make more money than I would if I works on LI but I'm already paying close to $6,000 extra to work in NYC. Isn't that enough already?
But I think you're forgetting that although we live in 'the city' we're commuting as well! I pay for the subway too, and when I move, I'll be paying for the LIRR but still living in NYC. So it's not really a matter of the non-NYC commuters that pay this, we all do. I think that the reason this commuter tax keeps coming up is because they've raised NYC income AND property taxes by a considerable amount over the past 4 years (since 9/11). The only people who actually have not been targeted are those who work here but do not live here and therefore do not pay the income or property taxes.
That $6K goes toward a semi-private agency that is providing you with a service that you are utilizing. I agree with you that the MTA fare increases are ridiculous and I still don't understand how they got away with it not once but twice within a year while having 2 sets of books. Not a clue. But, ultimately, that $ goes to the MTA, and not the City, so it's not helpful in anything but the transportation portion of the City's bill. The debt has been incurred largely due to the increase in police presence and activities because of the terrorist threat, which of course we all benefit from - including the people who live and work out on LI. Another terrorist attack would be absolutely devastating the the economy both in and out of NYC so it seems to be in everyone's best interest to do everything possible to keep it from happening again. Everything possible needs money though. And here we are again at the commuter tax.
But, I still think you guys have nothing to worry about, I really truly don't think it will pass.

I tend to agree with you on this. I don't think it's going to pass. It was shot down last time and hopefully it will be shot down again.
I just keep thinking about the light at the end of the tunnel for me...maternity leave ...and the hope that I won't have to return to this place (NYC) to work.

Knock yourself out.
Actually... I paid quite a bit of taxes last year. Looking at my W2s... I paid over 20k in taxes between federal, state, and city. Thats more than most people on here probably paid.
So uncle sam gets plenty of money from me.
