Perfect example:
If you buy that cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee at the Hicksville train station... drink it on the train... then throw it out in the garbage can on 6th avenue and 42st... do you think that garbage pickup is FREE?
The city benefited absolutely NOTHING from that sale of coffee... yet its the city's resonsibility to pick up your trash?
I rest my case.
This is a perfect example of the city's self-centered view of itself. Don't you think the reverse happens everyday too .... commuter buys a soda for the ride HOME on the train and throws it out in a Nassau county trash can??

I tend to agree with you on this. I don't think it's going to pass. It was shot down last time and hopefully it will be shot down again.
I just keep thinking about the light at the end of the tunnel for me...maternity leave ...and the hope that I won't have to return to this place (NYC) to work.
Its not going to pass. I wouldn't worry too much.
Now if you want to channel your fustration somewhere... people should channel it towards the lousy MTA. Talk about a POORLY run organization.

Thats just one example.
Like I said... what if you pass out on the middle of 5th avenue.... we will just have the city wait for a Nassau or Suffolk EMT to show up.
Hell... it took me over 30 minutes this morning just to get over the 59th street bridge! Damm traffic!
The beauty of all this is... nobody is forcing anyone to work in NYC. If you don't like NYC laws... then simply don't cross the Nassau/Queens border.

As far as paying NYC taxes... there is no sales tax on clothing under $110 any longer in NYC so I actually AM paying a lot more in LI than I would here.
Okay but there is still tax on food, drinks, and services, and that's where commuters are spending alot... in essence giving back to city a portion of what they 'take' by getting higher paychecks working there. And food and services are more expensive in the city than they are on LI. I don't think you are paying "alot" more in LI at all. You are probably paying about the same.
Additionally, I am not making money in LI and then going back to NYC to spend it. That's what commuters are doing here.
Alot of the people who make their money in the city also seek their entertainment in the city. So in addition to what they spend in the city during a work week, many commuters shell out big money for broadway, restaurants, and other city entertainment. I don't think as many city people come out to LI for their weekend entertainment.
People in Queens and Brooklyn often do. So, sometimes, do the people in Manhattan, especially during the summer. So, we are then paying the sales tax. And, when you break it down by how often you're there vs. how much you're spending, it's certainly not balanced. I most certainly do not spend 23% of my time out in LI but I would argue that I do spend close to the same amount on your taxes and in your local economy as you do here in NYC. I see that you disagree based on your post above and I think that this is one we're going to have to agree to disagree on because it's impossible to prove either way.
And, in the end, I am not making money there and spending it here on houses, etc. While stimulation of the economy is great and all while you're at work, the purchase of a house vs. the purchase of a soda is really not comparable. Plus, LI doesn't make NYC - but NYC does make LI. It's not so much in my best interest to keep LI economy's going but it most certainly is in your best interest to keep NYC's. I think ultimately that's where the main distinction lies.

And hell... I would love it if more people decided to work in their own home counties.
The damm "bridge and tunnel" folk are just making NYC too crowded. The less people commuting to NYC means... a quick ride for me into work.

Re: Commuter Tax
I'm confused...Does NYC own the LIRR? Why does paying the LIRRcompare to the new tax? I get that people are upset that they are already paying, but you are paying for the ride into the city. If hte city is responsible for paying for the statiosn that the train uses...then I don't see the big deal.

No, they don't. MTA is a hybrid agency - partially private/partially city funded. The part that is city funded are the tracks, the stations, etc - the things that are actually part of NYC. MTA runs the trains and pays the employees, fuel, etc. So yes, the prices are what's being paid for the ride to the city, not to the city for being in the city.

IMO LI if they are going to be affected by Bloombergs decisions should be able to VOTE whether he is OUR mayor or not
Give me a break. Since when are you FORCED to work in NYC? If you live in County A... that has nothing to do with County B. If you want to pursue employment in county B... you are to abide by their rules.
If you don't like it... stay in county A.
I took a job in NYC after interviewing for jobs on LI (for a teaching job). If I wanted to work, it had to be in NYC. I know a few teachers in the same boat. I hope to get a job closer to home at some point, but what if I can't? I will be forced to stay at my city job. Maybe your definition differs.

Maybe... but thats because again you CHOOSE to be a teacher. I know it sounds crappy... but its not like somebody is forcing you to do what you do. Maybe you should bytch to your Nassau and Suffolk congressmen about the lack of teaching jobs in Long Island.
Once I start taking residency in Nassau... it will be nice not to have to pay NYC taxes cause on my salary i pay close to $450 a MONTH in just NYC taxes alone (not even counting the state taxes). If I have to start paying some petty .45% commuter tax... so be it.

My point was that it is part of the MTA and they are a city agency - an agency who lied, cooked the books and ripped off it's customers in order to get millions of $$ in surplus cash, all at our expense. Now the city wants to hit us again. And we arent going to see dime one of that $$$ the essentially stole from us.

You keep missing the point with the MTA. The MTA is an independantly ran company. They ripped off resident of NYC, Long Island, Westchester, Upstate, etc.
Why do you keep comparing this to what the city wants to do? It makes no sense. The MTA ***** hard... but its apples and oranges.

I'm NOT missing anything. I understand what you've said to me - all 3 times you've said it.
My POINT is that the commuters are getting screwed already enough and paying out enough money to come to work in NYC - we shouldnt be hit with ANOTHER charge of some kind.

sorry, quick question...since I pay city tax, I live in SI, does this include me as well? I commute to the city.
SI is part of New York City. You already pay.
I live in NJ and commute into NYC and I have to pay, so why shouldn't people on LI?
Because people on Long Island already pay state taxes. You are simply paying NY state taxes on your paycheck. You aren't paying city taxes.
If you don't like the taxes you pay... you could work in your home state instead.
Actually, part of those taxes I pay goes to the city. It is broken out on my paycheck- some to NYC and some to NY State.
The point is the same- I work in NY and my taxes go to paying for the services I use here- so then it shoudl be the same for LI people.

You shouldn't be paying any more taxes than I do living in Long Island.
If you are paying more taxes than I do... your employer is withholding too much tax.
I could be wrong... look it up if you don't believe me. I am going by what my boss said... and he lives in PA.

DJ is right...NYC tax should not be withheld from your paycheck at all. If it is, you should contact your PR dept immediately. I am surprised your tax preparer never mentioned it but I believe you should be getting credit for it from NJ.

You were misinformed. You owed the state because they didn't take out enough STATE taxes.
Whether they take it out as state tax or city tax... on the tax form the refund comes from the state. The money you pay in tax goes to the STATE.
The city doesn't see a dime of your taxes.

My bad... i just read what you wrote and you said exactly what I just said. You are right though... you have to pay more NY State taxes.
But like I said... the city doesn't get a dime. If you are paying NYC taxes... better get that changed.
