I live in Sachem and found this flyer online regarding the budget vote (what will/will not get cut based on the results of the vote).

Budget Vote

It says that the cap is 3.14% but the tax increase would be 7.49% if the budget passes. I really don't know why I am so confused.

Can anyone explain this to me?

TIA

If it passes, it increases to 7.49. If it fails, they make a new budget that doesn't exceed the 3.14, which means things get cut (so they say)

They are going over the mandated cap. To win the vote they will need a super majority which I believe is 60%. If they do not get the super majority they have to have a revote at the 3.14%. If that does not pass then there will be no increase at all and a ton of cuts to the budget.

There are so many things that will get cut. No full day Kindy, No Gate, No Jr. Varsity sports (which means no sports at the middle schools), etc.

What is GATE? I read that on the flyer but don't know what that is.

Yes. It's not mandated by the state, and it's expensive.

Sachem already laid off quite a few teachers, and class sizes are going to be bigger next year. If the budget fails they're going to be letting go many more teachers. It's sad really.

I just wanted to say that I have never heard it called "kindy" Chat Icon Is that a Long Island thing?

I think a lot of schools are having a hard time passing their budgets this year. Good luck!

Re: confused . .school budget vote

As a teacher and also someone looking to buy a house in this district I think it's terrible that they are asking the community for this much more. I can't believe all the programs that will be cut. Our union opened up our contract and we gave back this year to help out and save jobs and programs. We also did the same 3 years ago. Has anything like that been done in Sachem?

This is all due to the dumb as* in Albany who cut the money Sachem gets. If we want to keep the schools good, you need to pay. I have friends in other districts that pay over 12k in taxes and mostly because of the good schools. I hope it passes.

But Sachem isn't the only district that lost funds. There are others who lost a lot more and have worked endlessly to figure out a balanced budget. I think there are increases needed, but not that high.

Re: confused . .school budget vote

Scare tactic...

If this is truly the case... why aren't the administrators getting CANNED??? with their high salaries and obviously cannot run a school, or budget to run one, why are they still there?

Totally agree Rachel! Scare tactics every single year to get people to vote yes. School taxes are atrocious here, and for what?! . The school I grew up going to is on the top 2000 list, in the Midwest, where taxes are like 2k a year. Many LI high schools are not even on that list, and their taxes are 10k. Its administrators salaries, period. Too many districts in 100 mile radius. Too much waste. So many changes need to be made.

Totally agree that changes have to be made but that probablywont happen in our life time. In the meanwhile, my kids need sports, honor programs, clubs, etc. I am willing to pay for all of that out of pocket. Even if it means putting them in private school. It might be a scare tactic but who knows. Sayville lost state aid but the average househould pays over 10k. They have more money and are a smaller district. When schools go down hill, property values drop, the bad moves in...etc. The system is so messed up....but what can we do about it?

Teachers in other states do not make ANYWHERE near what the ones in NY does. I know it is all the COL but that is why our school taxes are high (part of it of course).

Re: confused . .school budget vote

a lot of it also has to do with school districts in other states being much larger... consolidating school districts at the administrative level, IMO, would save SO much money.

MOST schools on LI lost funding from Albany. For every $1 we send in taxes to Albany, I think we get what, $.25 or $.30 in funding back.. it is an upstate/downstate issue... Upstate is fighting for the money- and they're winning.
