7% is a lot considering many families... mine included didn't get a raise this year. And normally I only get a 2% raise. Where are families supposed to get this money from?
If you read the budget plan, it is only $40 more/month.
Paid all at once when taxes are due.
$484/year which comes to $9.30/week.

Do you pay a mortgage? Aren't your taxes worked into your monthly mortgage payments?

Yes I have a mortgage and no, I don't have my taxes escrowed. I pay them twice a year on my own.

Sorry about that I meant that for the prior poster :) Who was saying that it wasn't $10 a week, that it was paid all at once. Meaning that it doesn't necessarily need to be one big payment...that how you are looking at it is better! $40/month or $10/wk!

It is but then my mortgage payments increase. No matter how you slice it, it's a significant increase for my family.

I get it, I really do as I don't have a ton of money floating around to pay any extra either. By looking at the big picture though, it will cost everyone less in the end.

1/2 day kindergarten or no kindergarten is HUGE. The big mistake was not increasing the budget gradually. People see this big jump and want to vote it down but it only hurts the kids and your property value...

There was a chart going around showing the budget increases over the last few years in Sachem...and if you average them all together, it's about 1.7% per year...including this large increase. That's lower than any neighboring district. Is it high? Yes! But Sachem has had a few years in the recent past where they asked for no increase at all. I think it's only fair to vote yes to this budget during the district's time of need. The state forced them to deplete the savings they had that allowed them to have such low budgets. And then the state decided to implement Common Core, which is very expensive. And then the state took money away. It's not really fair to punish the children in the schools because the state is run by morons.

No but I understand that (hopefully) one day I will. I don't think I can vote and even if I could, I still don't know which way I would. All I know is that $484 is a lot of money for someone who moved out here for the lower taxes but has already seen an almost $900 increase already in less than 2 years.

I moved out here for the lower cost and you know what 11 years later I'm paying 10k in taxes, more than what my brother pays in Lynbrook. Anyhow, my youngest is scheduled to start kindergarten next year. We don't even know if we'll have one now. It's scary. If it doesn't pass do you know how hard it will be to get it back? Your future kids might not have kindergarten, music, sports programs etc. kids deserve all of that and much more...

I agree... although I really find it hard to believe that they will cut K b/c I've heard it be threatened before and I can't seem to find a district that does not offer it.
But something has to be done. They keep threatening to cut programs and whatnot but these superintendents keep getting their nice raises, benefits, etc. By threatening programs, it seems more like a scare tactic than anything. I'll have to do more research. Like I said before (or in another thread since there are so many! ) I don't even think I can vote tomorrow since I read somewhere that you had to register by last week. Still, it's good to know for the future.

I have never heard of K going to be cut before this year. Other things are on the chopping block that never were, JV Sports, Gate. Teachers are NOT getting raises for this budget. Everyone needs to do their research, with or without kids in the district. I think you only have had to live in your home for a certain amount of time to be registered but I am not 100% sure of that. The best thing to do is go to one of the 12 elementary schools and find out if you are on the list

If the cap is 3% then why do they need to increase the budget 7%? That seems like alot? They couldn't balance the budget at like 5%?
At 3% we will lose a lot of things. They need the entire 7% for everything to stay the same.
So they claim.
I was thinking the same. I literally just bought a house in Sachem and am concerned about the huge jump. I knew taxes would go up but I wasn't expecting an increase like that.

It is an increase of $485/year. Sachem has not had increases or very low ones in the past 7 years. Compared to 12 other schools around they are on the bottom. They other ones just had higher increases throughout the years.

confused . .school budget vote
The district is huge and offers many services that aren't spelled out in the budget. It's sickening to see so many misconceptions blurted out at the supermarket or in Newspapers about how teachers are this and that.... teachers don't determine the budget, nor do they cause its increase. It's terrible that these residents didn't pass the budget here. Home values will decrease for sure. I'd never move into a district where there is 1/2 day Kindergarten, no JV sports, and no elementary instrumental music nor FLES.

If only everyone realized this!! My DH is a teacher at sachem... I'm really disappointed that this failed and that most residents didn't look at all the facts, and just saw the 7% number.

As a teacher and also someone looking to buy a house in this district I think it's terrible that they are asking the community for this much more. I can't believe all the programs that will be cut. Our union opened up our contract and we gave back this year to help out and save jobs and programs. We also did the same 3 years ago. Has anything like that been done in Sachem?
Im pretty sure they did
Yup! We did the same thing...

Re: confused . .school budget vote
I don't know, my district passed, it always does. But I don't see people blaming the teachers, I see the people blaming the administrators. Our superintendent's salary has gone up $80,000 since 2010. THAT is BS in this economy, if you ask me. They cut from textbooks, workbooks, instructional supplies, special ed, theater, sports equipment, transportation but the Super has had an $80,000 salary increase over 3 years?
I don't think that people vote it down bc of the increase necessarily, but bc of things such as what I posted above.
(I voted to pass the budget despite this though bc ultimately, it's the children and town's population that suffers, like has been said)

I agree completely. I voted No and my district is one of the 7 which is looking to bust the tax cap. My DH also happens to work for another school district on the north shore and he also voted No!! I voted no because 1) I don't have kids nor plan to and don't feel like subsidizing them with my taxes and 2) the fat can be cut for these sky high superintendent salaries. It makes NO sense to me how Carolyn Rankin can be pulling in almost $1 million a year more than the NYS Governor. I don't understand how any school admin is justifying a $500K salary or higher. Many other schools are doing with much less.
To me, it's not about throwing money at the problem but focusing on the quality of what these kids are learning at HOME and using those resources as efficiently as possible. DH told me that at a staff meeting a few years ago, he was told not to bother researching eBay or Craigslist for janitorial supplies or paper supplies which could have saved the school about $800 each semester but, because the school had a contract where they HAD to buy X number of supplies from X distributor at a higher cost, his idea was nixed...all because the union required that if his department didn't find a way to spend $8K by years end, that money would be "lost". DH was floored at how all his efficient "ideas" for helping to cut costs was basically ignored and ever since then, he learned the unions pretty much run the show and that even if he found a way to run his department on a shoestring budget, the higher level school district admins would be angry that the constant surpluses would lead to potential scrutny if how the funds in the annual budget were really apportioned..
