Cost to add bathroom
We have a cottage in the back of the house that is completely detached. (about 400 sq feet) It was damaged in Sandy and we are going to fix it to make it a "man cave" for DH so he can have friends over without disturbing everyone if they stay later.
I mentioned it to my Dad who lives OOS and he asked about the cost to add a bathroom. That way he can visit and not be in a hotel. (We have an extra bedroom but my Dad insists on having his own bathroom.)
So there is no pluimbing out there and I am wondering if it is worth it to put in a bathroom. It would be great if my Dad could visit more. DH thinks it would be great that friends wouldn't have to come into the house if we got a bathroom out there.
Would I need an architect for this or can I just go to a contractor?

You might need a building permit. Your contractor should be able to tell you.
You will have to trench the water and electric and cable back to it and figure out of you can hook up to your septic or have to put in new one. Maybe you are on a sewer system?

Re: Cost to add bathroom
Different scenario but we added a bathroom in our basement. No plumbing but right near our washer so there were existing pipes. We paid $12k for plumbing, toilet, sink and a small shower. No fancy fixtures.

Re: Cost to add bathroom
We recently added a bathroom in a part of the house where there was no plumbing. We paid about $25k. We also needed a permit because of the plumbing issue and adding the cesspool. It is a master bath, we added the toilet, double sinks and large walk in shower with all the fancy fixtures (body sprays, hand held and separate stationary shower heads)
I don't think you would need an architect, maybe just the contractor. But they would know better.

We added a half bath behind our laundry room and only paid $4k. But the water was already there.
