New England country, maybe. You will probably find me talking to squirrels...I am a chatterbox and would find that to be a problem.

Country down south, no way. never.

Re: Country living - yay or nay?

DH's family lives up there - in fact, his mom was born in Warwick. Having visted repeatedly, I can honestly say that I could never, ever live there (for a variety of reasons).

Re: Country living - yay or nay?

I could.......all day long...

My parents have a house in the country and this summer I got up early, sat on the deck overlooking the lake and read the paper while everyone was sleeping.

It's the last relaxing moment I think I've had!!!!!

Never. I can't be more than an hour away from a major city. I do not think that city will always be NY, but I need a more metropolitan atmosphere.

ditto for me

Warwick's only 55 miles from the city, so it isn't really more than an hour.

I grew up upstate and loved it. I really like eastern Long Island too, which is really as country as Orange County where Warwick is. I would definitely tmove back to a more rural area. Generally everywhere has shopping, etc., and that's all I need.

What would be different about living in the country during winter as opposed to living here?

It would take a lot longer than one hour to reach the city in the winter from Warwick. I live 5 blocks from the LIRR. I need more accessibility to more things and I would feel isolated in the country. I do not like country life enough to make it a permanent home.

yes and I do, I live in the area you are talking about. We love it! And as far as I'm concerned its the only way to live LOL.

I wouldn't consider it "country" as in much further upstate, rural country. As someone said its no more country than eastern Long Island except we have beautiful mountains.

I've noticed no difference in winters as compared to Queens, except our roads are clear as soon as the first flake falls. Heck half the time Islip is COLDER than us.

Warwick is a little more than an hour to NYC because of its location (which a draw for many who live there) it is 20 minutes to the train. But many other areas are an hour.

I LOVE that area, we spent our first anniversary at a B&B up there. I know a few LIers that relocated to that area in the last year or so.
We live in eastern suffolk county & I love it. I drive to Nassau county for work & I don't like the congestion & over abundance of strip malls at all. Things are slower out here & thats the way I like it.
I'd love to move even further east, like to East Marion.
My Dad has an apartment on east 56th & Lexington that we can use anytime. We haven't been there to stay overnight in about six years. Neither of us work in the city, so there is no advantage to being close to it.

From someone who actually grew up - born & raised in the country - talking Columbia County - HUGE graduating class with 50 people & ONE school K-12....

That "ain't" country...where I'm from was country.Chat Icon

With that said...no. Absolutely not. It was GREAT when I was a kid, but GOOD LORD! DH & I go back now & DH keeps asking me how I ended up so "normal"...and with all my teeth.Chat Icon

I thought we were the only ones who knew about Applewood Chat Icon

We've been going to Applewood for years, about 3 or 4 times a year (for applepicking and their Wino club activities). DH's grandparents lived in Warwick and he would spend summers there growing up.

It's definately a different life. But we couldn't do it all year long. We want to buy a summer house there after we retire.

We thought the same thing re: Applewood until this Saturday. It was PACKED!!!! I LOVE their wine tasting!!!! 3 bucks and you get to taste 5 different wines..and we had a girl who filled our glasses. So after not drinking for over 9 months...you KNOW I was happy Chat Icon

Ok it's not exactly "country" but close enough for those who have never lived in the country. What I hate is the TRAFFIC going up there! It took us over 2 hours to get there and that alone drove me nuts. I know it's no different from being in the city...but you'd think moving further up there wouldn't be any traffic like that...

Either way..it's not for me, at least not that far up. I like the quiet, but that is just waaaaaaaaaay too quiet for me. Although...I have to say there was one little area that reminded me of "Wisteria Lane" and that' I'd like Chat Icon

Re: Country living - yay or nay?

I could live in a smaller town but not the *country* country. DH grew up in the sticks in upstate NY and while he didn't have an awful childhood, you couldn't ride your bike to a friend's house or walk to school, and just the supermarket was a 25 minute drive.

Nice to visit, but to live...no thank you!
