CPSE meeting - questions

Hi! I've been a lurker on this site since it's inception (and on LIW before that), but finally needed to create an account because I need help.

My DS is 4 years old, and was just evaluated and diagnosed with Asperger's. Our CPSE meeting is next week, and I am a nervous wreck. I have no idea what to expect or how best to prepare. He's in preschool now, 3 half-days a week. He's due to enter kindergarten in September, although now I'm questioning if he will be ready to go.

Can any of the BTDT moms give me some advice? What should I expect at this meeting? How hard do you have to fight to get all the services you think are needed? I've heard that we should bring someone with us to this meeting who will be on our side - is this customary? If so, who do you bring?

Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

He's going into K? That means he is having a CPSE/CSE transition meeting.

Do you have an idea of what services you would like him to have? It's mostly based on test scores. You should have a parent advocate at the meeting, and you can "table" the meeting at any point if you feel it's not going well.

I went to the meeting with my husband, both of my son's therapists, and the person who did his speech evaluation. The second time was just the therapists, and now for transition I think it will be just the therapists and myself.

The CPSE chairwoman told me that if I chose to keep my son back then he wouldn't get services through the district. I would have to pay private or through my insurance for a year.

My district also offers remedial summer camp. That depends on the Kindergarten screening.

My son is supposed to be entering K in the fall also.

The meetings we have been to so far have went well. My district was pretty good about services so I didn't have to fight at all. I went in there trying to be as nice as possible, but knowing that I would fight to get the services he needed. Luckily it didn't come to that.

Re: CPSE meeting - questions

Thanks for your response.

The letter we received from the school district just said CPSE meeting - is it possible that this will just be a CPSE meeting and the CSE meeting will be scheduled separately? The letter also indicated there would be a parent advocate present - is this what you were referring to? Do we need to bring someone else on our own? Since this was the initial evaluation, we obviously don't have therapists yet. Should we try to contact either the OT or the psychologist who performed the evaluations? I believe the letter said that someone representing them would be at the meeting.

I do have an idea of the services we'd like to receive, based on suggestions from the psychologist who did the psych eval and some others. OT, a SEIT, behaviour specialist, in-home parent training, etc.

We were hoping to begin services for the remainder of the preschool year and continue them over the summer in hopes of getting him ready for kindergarten. I am just so overwhelmed with this whole process (as well as the diagnosis itself).

I agree with everything said above. I actually just had my CPSE/CSE transitional meeting and it was basically nothing. They just went over the services my DD is currently recieving and we agreed to keep them the same for the remainder of the year. At this meeting though they do do approvals for summer classes which we were approved for also. We will have our CSE meeting some time in May I think. That is when we'll get into her K services and placement.

Now that being said I am sick to my stomach sending my DD to kindergarten next year as I really do not think she is ready at all. She would totally benefit from another year in preschool but as the previous poster said, the district will not pay for services if I do not send her to Kindergarten. I know my district has alot of different services once they hit school age so I'm researching everything that I will be able to get for her. Some districts have what they call a K1 or K2 class so if they go into K1 and aren't ready for 1st grade they go to K2 instead, which I'm already leaning towards. I also know that they have social lunch groups to help some of the children with social/feeding issues, which I'm also going to be pushing for. I would suggest to check out your districts website and call the SEPTA to see if you can find out what kind of services they have before your meeting.

Good luck!

They can be separate meetings, my district does them together.

Yes, that's the parent advocate.

You can bring someone for support if you need to, a friend or family member. They also say to bring a picture of your child.

I would def. contact all of the people who did the evals and have them put the DX and recommendations in writing. Ask them if they are familiar with your district, and how they are about giving services... Some are great, some are not. That will give you an idea of how prepared you need to be.

They will be asking for the services, so ask them what they have in mind, and make sure they are putting that in writing. (You need a copy of everything.)

The chairperson will usually hear your story and make you an offer. You have to take it from there. If you're okay with it, sign the papers, if not, don't.
