CT announces full in person school in the fall

Suffolk had 30 new cases today. 30. I really hope as numbers drop, school opening becomes a big reality for us all.

"Governor Cuomo was on NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday, detailing the state’s plans to reopen schools for the fall.

Right now, New York is planning on reopening classrooms for in-person instruction, but the governor said anything can happen in two months. He wants the state to continue to monitor what the infection rate is and what the disease is doing before they make a final decision."

I don't think anyone is blaming teachers. Just like any other job on the planet, there are good teachers and there are bad teachers. Some went above and beyond and others just did the bare minimum if that. The school fiasco needs to be blamed on the administrators not the teachers. They are the ones who made the plans or lack there of. September should be different as there has been plenty of time to learn from the mistakes and plenty of time to give professional development to teachers that need it to get more familiar with online teaching. As far as teachers not going back to work, that is their prerogative but then they should be out on disability or a leave. No job just lets you stay home because you don't want to return, medical or not.

Unfortunately I asked about this and I was told that they cannot force “professional development” over the Summer because it’s not in the contract.
So if they let people attend by choice, the good teachers will get better and the bad teachers probably won’t show up.

Correct. We are ten month employees. We can’t be forced to work for free during our two months of vacation.

Then I think the Districts need to look long and hard at the teacher contracts then. Any person that is not willing to take a course over the summer (which are basically a few hours at most - for Google Classroom or FlipBoard training) to better themselves to understand the new landscape of their job should not be allowed back in their current position especially when they do not have to pay for the courses themselves. Every profession is doing things outside the norm and it would be disgraceful for a teacher to show up untrained because it was their "off months".

CT announces full in person school in the fall

We are being forced to work for free this summer- but at the end of the day it equals about three hours a week. Not a big deal, IMO. We have to sign up for virtual PD's that will help us with remote learning, should we be hybrid or have to go entirely remote again at some point during the academic year.
Next week I have to log in for 90 minutes on Monday and 90 minutes on Wednesday.
It is still FAR less work that I put in March 16th- June 19th, so I will take it.
I don't know, these are not normal times. Everyone is struggling, everyone is stressed, and everyone has had to deal with changes to their job and/or personal life. I just want to keep my job- and teachers keeping their jobs are not a guarantee. I will do whatever it takes to still have an income in September.

Every profession has bad apples. I feel your blame is misplaced. Be upset with local government who has continually neglected education. Money needs to be put into education. When March 13th came, we shouldn’t have been thrown into distance learning without any training. We were all navigating uncharted water together. This is not something any of us wanted. There were limited guidelines sent to us by school districts. Students had limited access to technology. Limited family resources. We tried to make the best of a ****** situation.

If we are distance learning in the fall, most districts have learned from their mistakes and will have better procedures in place.

Any class I have taken in the summer I have paid out of pocket for.

I would hope that during an unprecedented time, people would be encouraged to try to get better at their job. Do a better job for their students. Want to try to make it an overall better experience on both sides.

I think in many careers people do outside research in their own time to try to become more knowledgeable.

give me a break!!!! you know how many times i am literally on a vacation and i have to "work", as in email, conference call, connect remotely. i dont even go on vacation without my laptop. and i maybe make as much as a teacher and work 12 months a year with 3 weeks off throughout the year and pay triple for health insurance, so dont give me that we dont get paid enough crap. i am so over teachers thinking their jobs are different from the rest of the world. you wouldn't survive in private sector with these attitudes.

CT announces full in person school in the fall

I can assure you that not every teacher did nothing during remote learning, most worked VERY hard, harder than they have ever worked before. I can also assure you that not all teachers have the "I won't do anything extra over the summer unless you pay me" mentality.
Teachers get such a bad name lately, because of the two reasons posted above. It makes myself, and many other educators, so angry.
I am sick of hearing about the contracts. Contracts can be changed- our teacher contracts are not the holy grail. They should be modified when it comes to extenuating circumstances.
Yes we worked hard, yes we deserve a break. Asking for some PD here & there to better yourselves and better the education you give your students is not too much to ask.
What about the nurses & doctors who worked 12 hour days in ICU's, watching COVID patients die left & right? Where is their break? We got to work from the comfort & safety of our own homes. Get over yourselves.

So what would happen if they work a day or two over the summer? The union would kick them out lol The union (and those that refuse to do an inch more than required) are really what give teachers a bad name.

I couldn’t work with kids all day, that’s why I’m not a teacher. But if I was a teacher and loved what I did, I would always be working to make myself better. I do that with my job now. I’m always going to seminars and local business meet ups to grow. I don’t get paid for them, I do it because I WANT to be better at what I do.

I’m not sure what attitude you’re referring to. You’re generalizing a whole group of people based on the actions of a few. The vast majority of teachers are always learning and expanding. All I did was answer a question. Most teachers are 10 month employees.

My husband has the same type of job as you. He works while we are on vacation. He is well compensated for the work that he does.

I busted my ass the last three months to ensure my special education students received the support necessary to survive during the distance learning process.

I have worked in the private sector before becoming at teacher. As a matter of fact, I did very well. It seems like you’re not happy with the job you currently have. Come join us as a teacher and make some positive changes.

I agree with you. The unions in MANY industries (and I call teaching/policing industries, because well they are) are protecting the bad. The complacent. Those who choose not to do a single thing beyond their "steps" and "professional development" once they reach whatever top pay is or tenure or whatever. The ones who think it's an easy career. Who see the perks of a summer off, good money on Long Island, and the benefits of an inherited and generational system. I am so sick of hearing about how much they are busting their ass with distance learning when all the private sector parents saw was nothing but the flaws. And there were real, tangible, impactful flaws affecting these children. Stop telling us what you are doing and go do something about it to the administrators. When you have a problem at work deal with it even if it means "going above and byeond" like you teachers claim to do.

I'm work summers. I love my career. I'm not a teacher for a reason so teachers please don't flatter yourself (I think the pandemic highlighted just how much of us DON'T want to be educators

I am not saying that the spring was not a shit show for teachers and families. It was. Everyone was unprepared. I have the utmost respect for teachers and I also think it is a pretty good job to have, at least in Suffolk County. I know some teachers went above and beyond. I also know that some teachers did nothing. For every teacher that did great, someone can come up with an example of a teacher who did terrible. The only reason to look back on the spring is to figure out what to do better in the fall. Maybe taking a few hours out of your (generic you) 2 months off, is needed to do that union or not.

I am very familiar with all the guidelines in the Spring and what is coming for the fall. I am also very familiar with what our Teachers Union was telling our teachers not to do, against administrators directives. For the teachers who did their best, they should have no worries and they are appreciated but to those who didn't (and their was alot) need to be held accountable.

So if they let people attend by choice, the good teachers will get better and the bad teachers probably won’t show up.

Correct. We are ten month employees. We can’t be forced to work for free during our two months of vacation.

This last quote is exactly why public school educators failed so miserably these past few months. Private schools excelled at remote learning as they knew parents wouldn't pay for bs learning. Public school educators are entitled, backed by completely unnecessary unions, and refuse to work harder or think outside the box. We need a new, privatized system as this one is failing our children. Chat Icon

ALL public school teachers? Here we go with the disgusting generalizations again. For the record? I heard the exact same thing about SOME private school teachers. I am SO SICK (as a public school teacher who "went above and beyond") of ANYONE being painted with the same brush. It's ENOUGH. (And for the record? Our "completely unnecessary unions" protect us from parents who unfairly paint everyone with a giant brush. So no. I don't think they're unnecessary at all.)

I will tell you IME, the lower grade teachers did a lot more work with kids than the higher ones. Emails were never returned for days, after an assignment was already due. All problems went through the guidance counselor, not the teacher. It was a pass/fail situation so why bother working your ass off as a student when your grade was already determined for the year. Many, many teachers make close to or well over 100K and SHOULD be going over and beyond. Not saying many did not but many of us make no where what a teacher makes, not even a first year teacher and have been working out butts off too and don’t get the next 2 months off. Us schlumps will be either back at work all day or working from home while many are traveling, at the beach, at home sitting by the pool, etc.
I appreciate what teachers do and yes there are good and bad ones so while we shouldn’t lump all as bad, we all shouldn’t lump as good and remember they get many perks that “regular” jobs do not.

First of all -- the "in my experience" makes this less offensive, so thanks for that. I mean it.

But I teach high school and -- like I said -- went above and beyond, and so did the other teachers I work with, so that's MY experience. i did not say we should lump all as good, but we also can't lump all as bad. THAT'S my point.

(And yes, while summers off are, indeed, a perk, teachers don't get paid for those two months, so it's certainly not a "rent-free" situation. Not saying it's not good but it's not all lollipops and rainbows. Plus -- there's still work to do for next year (when none of us have any idea what to expect).)

But to reiterate -- as you already said -- this is about one person's experience, and one person's experience neither can nor should define an ENTIRE profession.

You have the option (at least in my experience) to have your salary split into 12 months. If you are saying that you (in general) ONLY get paid 100K for 10 months, you do realize that sounds even worse then for non teachers who work all 12 months and don’t get paid close to that or do and still have to work the extra 2 months. Add on holidays, Christmas break, winter break, spring break, snow days.
I do know many teachers take classes on breaks so I am not against teachers and how hard they work to get more pay.

Nope. No such option. I am not saying I ONLY get paid my salary (and stop assuming what it is) in 10 months. I am saying I get no paychecks for two months. Period. This isn't an argument. It's a reality. I worked all 12 months in a different field, and it was a lot easier to manage finances when the paychecks arrived every two weeks. I work hard for my salary -- VERY hard. But I get paid for the months I'm working. That's my point. I'm not complaining about my salary, but I'm sick of hearing about the paid summer vacation. It isn't.

And I'm done debating this. It's never ending (and that's not about you, specifically -- just in general). I know I work very hard and have never stopped working very hard. My point is that generalizations are damaging.

(And I can't help but see the irony in people complaining about teachers not working very hard during a work day when they're on this website while also ostensibly at work. I'm not working now (clearly), but when I am, I can't be on here because I'm doing my job. This isn't a dig at you -- just the point that everyone who screams about teachers in their experience not working 24/7 should probably not post something like that from 9-5...)

Re: CT announces full in person school in the fall

There seems to be a huge disconnect between this website and reality. Apparently every single teacher on this website went above and beyond, communicated all day long with students, and provided live or pre-recorded personalized instruction.

At the same time, MANY of the parents on this website, and most that I know IRL (including me) had a poor experience with their teachers. (Even though my teachers made several comments about how hard they were working.)

In most other professions your job security is not tied to your effort. It's tied to results. And yes I realize that cannot translate directly over to teaching. But it can a little bit. And that is what parents are saying. Teachers may have worked harder than ever, but in *some* cases it wasn't enough. And for *some* teachers (including my own principal who I spoke to), the response was "well we did what we were required to do".

Some of us parents are just a little sick of the defensive responses. I worked hard the last few months too, harder than ever. But at the end of the day if my clients are unhappy I will lose my job. They don't care if I worked on their project until 2am every night. If it sucked, it sucked.

And some of us teachers are just a little sick of the attacks on a whole profession. I'm sorry you had a bad experience and that a lot of others did, too. I really am. I'd feel the same way. And I'm not arguing the point that there shouldn't have been a greater effort on the part of people who didn't do enough. Of course there should have. But the broad generalizations (not from you) are the problem, at least to me.

Now I'm really done. I just wanted to address your point, which is a valid one, and explain why I'm "defensive."
