I wonder how the mask thing is gong to work esp with the younger kids. My dd is 8 and in the rare occasion I take her with me to the store , it’s me constantly repeating “don’t touch” “leave your face alone” “ put it back over your nose”. I can just picture the teachers repeating the same things 10000x’s a day!

I’ve been repeating myself to my DH this whole time the same way Chat Icon

This. I’d also think that constantly touching the mask would invite other microorganisms to linger around the nose and the mouth more since they’d be trapped by the mask.

Both of this. I yell at my kids constantly all the things written here.

I also think its just inviting them to touch their faces more and getting more risk of getting sick.

But hey they want to make kids wear them all day good luck to all the teachers who will be constantly yelling at them!!

I really don't see this as a good thing. Kids will not be able to wear masks all day. That will not happen in the younger grades. This plan is far from ideal but I don't think any plan will be. This is will be good for the first week and as soon as someone gets Covid, half the school will be out and in quarantine.

Kids are going to have to wear masks all day in NY too. I am almost positive that will be one of the rules.

Absolutely not true. They can be asked but not mandate. It is already in the guidelines from summer school that is starting in 2 weeks. All adults needs masks, not childen.

I saw that about the camps. Adults in masks, kids no masks. Glad to hear it applies to school as well.

If i was a CT teacher I would be so upset that the gov. made a decision way too early. No decision should have been made this far out, it's nonsense

Numbers are low and continue to drop. Working parents are back at work full time, so they'll need plenty of time to prepare if they are going to be dealing with remote schooling again. IMO they did need to make this decision now. They can always reverse the decision if something dramatic changes before September.

Daycare teachers have been working this entire time under the same conditions, probably worse.

Exactly. They can't wait until late August to make a decision. Parents need to plan.

But as parents that’s part of our job also—to figure out the possible scenarios and plan accordingly. Not wait until the last minute and scramble. If we know there is a possibility that kids won’t be in school all day/every day we have to plan for that possibility.

I’ve already spoken to my boss and my job has approved for me to work from home at least 2 days a week until January. So I’ve been interviewing for a sitter to come 3 days a week to watch my kids and help them with schoolwork if necessary. My husband posted the opportunity on Facebook and we probably got 50 replies within a few hours.

That's great for you.

Please realize that for many families, remote schooling will mean dramatic, life altering changes. Not every job can be done from home. Not every family suddenly has money for three days a week childcare. Not every family can account for this possibility *just in case*.

With the unemployment numbers where they are do you really think some of the lower income working parents have any leverage to negotiate a convenient schedule?

Why do teachers alone have the ability to collectively refuse to re-enter society until it's 100% safe?

My MIL lives in CT in a giant house all alone. She might be getting some houseguests come September, much as it would kill me to live with her Chat Icon

My sister works in daycare and she said she had a meeting the other day with the SCOPE director. He said there have been over 700 students attending this whole time and not one child or staff member has gotten sick.

Governor Murphy in NJ says he believes they will be back at school in the fall - and some of the things he has said look a bit more normal (like the potential for recess).

CT announces full in person school in the fall

So now that both CT and NJ have announced guidelines for schools, to people still think it's perfectly acceptable for Cuomo to still say he doesn't know? It is incredibly disturbing how little our children's education is being considered. The NY state board of regents has expressed grave concern that we are getting down to the wire here, and Cuomo has still given them zero guidance on how to reopen safely. Its disgusting actually.

This! Specially from a state that has the “best” schools. Cuomo is really dropping the ball on this one!

I grew up hearing NY has the best schools. It is now NJ and MA. Unfortunately, NY has really fallen in nationwide rankings. I am surprised Cuomo is not coming out with anything and based on what I heard from the UFT there is a fight brewing.

The districts already have these same guidelines from the State. This is nothing new. The only thing they do not know is how many students to a class, but that is really going to be determine by how large the classrooms are and about busing. Busing is going to be the biggest obstacle. NJ gave nothing new that districts have already been working with in NY.

All districts have been asked to start committees on how to get back to school. They need 3 scenarios, 1 - back to normal (not happening), 2 -back to school using guidelines (most likely a hybrid option) and 3 - full distance learning.

The Board of Regents is meeting on July 13th and that is hopefully when more concrete guidelines will be set in place. After that date, districts need to send their plans to the State to be approved.

We are in a rural part of NJ with a a very small population, my son had just 13 kids in his class, so I am hoping we open up. We haven't had many cases where I am so hopefully we open up school in the fall. If camps and daycares are all open now I see ZERO reason to keep schools closed.

So what are some affordable areas in CT with good schools? I will seriously rent until NY goes back. I’m being totally serious too, my kids lost over 3 months of schooling they are not losing more because of our “leader”. .

We fell in LOOOOOOOOOOOVE with Simsbury, CT. It is a GORGEOUS town in northwestern CT. The real estate was insanely good, for around $500K you could have a HUGE, glorious, newly built home. Schools were VERY highly rated too and taxes weren't crazy. I wish it would've worked out, I LOVE CT and all of New England.

Exactly. It amazes me daily that it takes a pandemic for people to start practicing basic hygenine and sanitiation- especially in schools and daycares.
Perhaps this will now lead to less overall sickness in schools with flu, stomach bug, strep throat, coxsackie, etc

There are quite a few towns near Hartford with great schools and are more affordable than a lot of LI. Some have much easier highway access than others, but you really can’t go wrong with a lot of those towns. Taxes are generally higher in central CT compared to Fairfield County, but you get a lot more for your money up there. It wouldn’t be a good fit if you need to commute to NYC, but if proximity to the city isn’t an issue, I would recommend looking up there.

CT has so many beautiful towns, we loved Essex too. Had we been able to get up there proximity to NYC was a non-issue for us which was good because it opened up more of the state to us. The further you get from NYC, the better off you'll be in terms of housing. Maybe one day!! Chat Icon

I think there should definitely be protocols in place. CT will have masks, social distancing, etc. But even with very strict protocols in place, there will be parents not comfortable with their children going back, and teachers not comfortable going back. And remote options should be available for them.

This!

Give ppl choices. Stop forcing ppl to do what u think it’s “right”. -Not directed to u Naturalmama, I’m talking in general.

Our district sent out an email to parents that there will be remote learning options for students and we’ll as staff who can’t return due to medical risks.

Parents will also be expected to provide face coverings for their children, but the district will make arrangements if there is a financial hardship or medical condition preventing the use of them.

It looks like they’ll be keeping the class together at all times, but they will use larger areas for lunch and outside for recess and choir, weather permitting. I’m sure there will be a lot of planning and more guidance in the weeks ahead, but even the possibility of FT school district s something to look forward to and worth all of the restrictions being put in place IMO. Kids need to be back in school as long as it’s safe to do so.

Things in NY are so much better. I think he has to open the schools (full opening) for several reasons:

(1) the economic burden on families who have working parents - staggered/hybrid approach leaves many young kids without childcare. Where do they go? Daycares? how is that any better?

(2) the number of infections in NY is the lowest in the country. How can you justify other states (CT) opening fully and not us?

(3) But possibly #1: OUR CHILDREN NEED AN EDUCATION!

To the poster who says "screw the teachers..." YES!!!! Screw the teachers, the administrators and the unions who absolutely FAILED the children and parents of their communities. If you had put even an iota of effort into remote learning maybe the thought of it being extended wouldn't be as unacceptable and repugnant as it is. You should all be ashamed of yourselves! You did a BAD JOB! Unions were telling the teachers to NOT do pre-recorded sessions, live learning, etc. Why the hell not?

Time to suck it up buttercups and work like the rest of us "essential workers" had to during the crisis. Try to redeem yourselves.

I am a teacher, and I worked my ass off. A Catholic school teacher who makes 75% less than public school teachers, and I poured my heart and soul into my class. My children's teachers did a decent job.
You are absolutely correct in saying that there were teachers who did nothing. That infuriates me, as do these teachers unions who basically have zero expectations of teachers. However, even with unions giving teachers permission to do nothing, many did. They went above and beyond.
But those who believe for even one second that there were not a large number of teachers that absolutely failed our children, you are sadly mistaken.
Lastly, you can't say you want schools open as normal, but no masks, social distancing, or other safety measures. School will not be normal until there is a treatment or vaccine. Schools can open well before that, but parents & teachers have to be accepting of the safety measures.
Overall, remote learning was an epic failure. God help us all if schools are not open in September.

Are you kidding? I’m sorry your district sucked, but that wasn’t the case everywhere. My union never told me I couldn’t do anything. If i wanted to live stream my entire day, I could have. How I ran my class was up to me and guidelines were set by admin not the union.

I teach HS and got probably 40 emails from students telling me how they loved how I structured my online class. I actually developed my lessons based on feedback I got from students. I sent out weekly surveys and modified things weekly to best fit my students’ needs.

My son is in K. His teacher did the best she could. Kindergarteners are not self sufficient so he needed a lot of assistance from me. That’s not the districts fault.

We get it. You had a bad experience. Other people didn't. The teachers in my school worked their asses off. They did a stellar job. Everyone has had a different experience. Stop painting every teacher with the same broad brush otherwise you're just going to sound foolish.

CT announces full in person school in the fall

I wish I were in CT honestly.
I also worry that too much insulation is going to make the kids get sicker .
Remember it is the frequennt virus infections that the kids get that makes them immune to ( kind of ) the Covid 19

Honestly teaching children is an essential service. Why are these jobs paid so high with pensions if it was not considered essential,
Every one else Is working. My district did a very poor job with remote.
More than 50 percent of the population are not able to homeschool the kids .
If the nurses are working without PPE in the hospital then the teachers should be out to educate.
If the grocery worker is being paid a measly 15$ to put them at risk what makes the teachers so special ?
I don’t get it. Honestly it’s the lobbying from the unions
And what about the single parent who has to work with kids
Does the society give a damn?

I mean I live next door to a teacher couple who are inviting friends and having party
But oh no if you come to school and teach u will get COVID, right

Honestly if u are not a teacher and u are struggling are you going to advocate for the remote teach nonsense ???

Let the teacher who is Scared go on leave or retire and let the rest work. I mean Covid rates are so low it’s ridiculous to be saying remote .
