currency exchange

Has anyone exchanged money for foreign currency lately? I'm planning on traveling soon and will need foreign cash - we're heading off the beaten path and may not have access to ATMs and places that take credit cards. Would you recommend exchanging money before I leave, or after I get there in the airport? Do I need to already have the amount I want to exchange in U.S. cash, or can they charge my credit card? Advice is welcomed!

Re: currency exchange

I know some of the big branches of Chase in NYC will do currency exchange. as far as the rates go...I have no idea what they get.

You can also check out American Express offices. I know they used to do currency exchanges years ago...not sure if they still do them

I would do it at a bank if you aren't going to use your CC or ATM card. You will get the best rate there.

YOur best bet is to get a small amount of cash before you go and get cash at the airport when you get there.

Where are you going? I think you would be surprised about how many cash machines there are off the beaten path!

Re: currency exchange

I would get a small amount of cash from the US. Banks are usually cheaper than exchange booth.

I found that using my CC overseas (Europe) is cheaper than exchanging money. I use CC at ATM or to make purchases.

Just be aware that American Express CC is not always accepted as much as in the US. So I usually take my Visa or Mastercard. A usually safe bet. You may also need to enter your code so you will need to know what it is.
