Re: CVS? Amnio? Both? Neither?
With DS I had an amino at about 20 weeks. With time around I did not take any of those tests.

We did none of the above and none of the other statistical "marking tests" such as the AFP or neuchal translucensy test.
Our decision was based off the fact that we would not want to take the risks associated with CVS and Amnio when we would never abort the baby. Also, I didn't want to deal with "false positives" from the other exams and worry the rest of my pregnancy because I would never get teh CVS or amnio....
Its a personal decision that needs to be made with your partner...... Everyone chooses what is right for them and their baby!
ITA ITA ITA. We did not do anything other than the Level II sono that looks for markers, and even that did not thrill me. We would never abort, and having helped raise a DD brother I am prepared if I need to be. Despite my age and the Drs begging me to at least do an ultrascreen I decided against it & DH was more than fine with that decision.
It is a very personal decision, and one you have to really think about what is best for you.

For me, it will probably be neither. I have my Level II at the end of the month, but that will be it for me. Abortion is not an option for me, regardless of what the child may have, so I won't bother with any of these and their risks.

this was exactly my and dh's reasoning. we'd accept our baby no matter what and a lot of the earlier tests they're really inaccurate so i don't see the point in them.
Same here!!
It's not about not accepting a baby. Sometimes it's about being prepared and knowing what you are facing.
I should of mentioned that it took me 4 years ttc when we finally got pregnant. So even the smallest risk of miscarriage frightened us, which is mainly why we chose not to do any testing esp. the amnio.
The reason why it is "recommended" to have an amnio when you are 35 and older by doctors is because your chance to have a miscarriage are the same as having a chromosone issue.
Although there are always "possibilities" of an amnio not catching something it is indeed 99.4% accurate vs "markers" test who are not very accurate (you can ask any OB or genetic counselor about it. They will tell you!).

Considering that many if not most miscarriages are due to chromosomal abnomalities, it makes an awful lot of sense. If one in 4 women miscarry, then I would also imagine the odds of a woman over 35 miscarrying are even more than that.
It took us a while to conceive as well but my issues were not age related. I had an amnio knowing full well the odds of miscarriage. Mind you, I already HAD two miscarriages before Abby and I felt the benefits of the test outweighed the risks. It is not so cut and dry for some people. It certainly wasn't for us. My medical and family history played a BIG role in our decision - even moreso than my age.
