Dad's in Surgery (Updates through the thread)
2PM Update So they were scheduled to take the tube out of his throat at 1pm. That wasn't good enough so he yanked it out himself. Caused damage (because that's what we need, right?) He's breathing fine on his own. Can't speak or have solids for a bit.
They say they got all the infected tissue, he's stable and looks good. He'll be in the Hospital for 6-8weeks.
Thank you all again. And please know I didn't put this out here to just overdramatize anything. When my brother called it really was life or death (as he described it) and very touch and go. I'm glad we are where we are but I think we are much more out of the woods than before. So thank you all again!

Happy to hear he is doing well. You might want to think about bringing AJ to visit him - it would really lift his spirits and make him realize he shouldn't just give up.

Dad's in Surgery (Updates through the thread)
8/9 2pm Update: He’s back in surgery today and another round of Dialysis. They said they looked at his wound this morning and found questionable tissue so they are going back into to remove it. I asked about his kidneys and was told “they are bad” well thanks Genius but he was in renal failure when he walked in how is he now? “well, they are bad” but you’re doing surgery don’t they have to be at least well enough for that? “They are bad, which is why we gave him Dialysis” ugh
I really have nothing to say to that last part but *sigh*
I can’t call back until nearly 6 to see how things went with this surgery. Good news is I have the number right for the ICU (my mom gave me a bad number) so at least I can avoid talking to her as much as I can. I don’t know if children are allowed to call for status on a parent, but I guess I’ll find out.
Now I'm just FRUSTRATED!

Oh and I asked how he pulled his tube out and the nurse said “well we can’t sit on him. Its not like we can watch him…… (hesitates) …… ya know he can wiggle out if we had bound his hands so …” Did you bind his hands “no” so then if you were to take his tube out at 1pm why wasn’t it done then or someone checking in on him “we have other patients” True enough and I let that drop there. I mean other people’s parents in there too. But I can’t help but feel he was going to say “We can’t watch him 24/7 in ICU”

Re: Dad's in Surgery (Updates through the thread)
Status Update 8/17 Noon Well Dad has had a total of 4 surgeries now. The last one done was yesterday. He is off Dialysis. But his sugar is whacky. They can’t seem to get it under control. He was up and walking a lot earlier than he should have been. He does not wait for the therapist show up, he marches in place. They are drying out the wound to speed recovery. He has all his senses around him and great humor. The lady who takes blood and one of the RNs (guy) keep walking in and shaking their head. They sit and tell him how bad that first day was. The lady swore he’d never make it that first night. I think he understands how close it got. I lectured him about his sugar etc. He promises to be better. We’ll see. His toe is black again and has stayed black. They look at it and it is likely they make take that toe when his sugar levels balance out. No biggie. I asked if he can keep the bones. LOL made him laugh. It would be the ‘ring finger’ toe on his right foot. They plan to move him into a room later today and out of ICU. He is definitely on the side of recovery. He hopes to be out in 2 weeks. He’s “pushing it” as we say. Something our family generally tries to avoid. But he really hates the hospital and wants to get home. I caution that going home too early may just land him back in the ICU. But to that, he’s not listening.
